- So happy that we were the early bird that got this lovely GR Yaris, so glad that the car makers are opening up their garages for test drives, and equally happy that the country is opening up again.
We take the GR Yaris up our favorite road to check out its handling. Can a mere 1.6 litre 3-cylinder albeit turbocharged engine hack it? And it's a manual too. Would YS Khong be over-awed by the mechanicals?
It takes some getting used to, I suppose, but there is always a first time for everything.
Well, the TNGA platform certainly does wonders, great visibility, excellent handling, and the AWD system is something else. It is not often that we get a chance to buy a car with a manual transmission.

You know things are getting serious when Uncle YS stopped talking. That aggressive 3-pedal footwork is definitely a callback to old school rallying era. This GR Yaris begs to be driven like that. Thank you Uncle for letting that baby show its full potential
I think uncle is holding back some of its true potential since theres traffic on the road. Maybe hit the track sometime to fully see what this car is capable of
@@chanshen3911 better yet, throw in a set of rally rubbers and suspensions, then let Uncle loose on a twisty hardpacked dirt road. It is a WRC homologation car after all

You are absolutely super great, uncle! The most real UA-cam car testing channel. Will definitely share it! Like how you're pushing the car but also be proactive and preventive in your driving, preventing all potential issues ahead of time even if in real traffic. Respect for that too.

Astonishing run. The adrenaline was pumping throughout the entire video!! Superb control during understeer and gear slips, tho I noticed the GR Yaris is torquey enough to push itself even with gear change misses.

I can watch uncle's footwork all day.... btw uncle, after you tested both GR Yaris and Civic Type R (FK8) on genting run what's your insight on both cars?
The GR Yaris is AWD, and the system is really very different from what you see in other cars. This is a race-bred car and is really quick.
The FK8R is another car that is also made for track use, but it is only FWD, but it has more power in a straight line.
Overall, the Yaris is smaller and lighter, and more agile, while the FK8R is faster.
Finally it is the skill of the driver that determines if the full power can be unleashed. I have not yet learnt the full potential of the car yet, having only had 2 days with it.
On the race track the FK 8 is probably faster, but on a rally track or a tight or wet circuit, the Yaris is potent.
On Genting, the Yaris is faster, if both cars are stock. In the wet, the Yaris is probably unbeatable right now.
GR Yaris comes alive when driven by 5 times rally champion. I took the audacity to reckon that it's all smiles underneath tt mask. =)

Wah..uncle... Old rallying spirit in your heart just evident.... but that side, that euro pattern 6 speed, R at furthest left... Sometimes when I get into this type manual(admit rare in Malaysia)... I'm usually miss 1st gear, straight to Reverse... Uncle, did some car manufacturers have some fail safe mechanism for this type Manual transmission?
Do not lift the stick up in normal shifting. The lifting part is only for reverse gear, so dont touch it and you are okay.

Dear YS Khong, I see you are enjoying your driving. At the same time, can you tell us how was the acceleration compared to same category car. Likewise the road holding, brake, oversteer, neutral or understeer. Body roll, etc
Unfortunately there is no same category car, so there is no comparison. As for how it handles, just watch the video and you can see for yourself. Actio speaks louder than words

Left foot braking is very hard on the brakes: tje standard brakes won't last 4 corners, and we didnt use the iMT. I guess I am old school.

What an intense experience and great run up the Genting, thankfully with minimal traffics! Haha!
By the way, is it okay to floor the pedal all the way up Genting (for any normal cars)? Will the car heat up too much after the climb?
Things always get hot, that us why we slow down to cool off everything before stopping.

We couldnt find a chase car fast enough with a good driver to keep up, but I agree with you. A helicopter or a drone would have been good, but we are a poor channel, no money to splurge, hahaha.
A lot of leg work, busy, but still no match with VW DSG 😁 but uncle YS still strong and still boleh 👍 woa… respect
Manual is more engaging, and more fun. I also have a car with dsg. The drive system for this car is something else.
