Ice Cube saw right through Jerry Heller. He was was the smart one to get away. Dr. Dre caught on later. Plain & simple. But much respect to Eazy-E for helping to bring this music to the forefront. Without Eazy's push, we wouldn't know about N.W.A.

ERIC EPPS Without this old dude, we wouldn't know about Cube, Dre, or E. The movie was great but it was Ice Cube's version of the story, no one else's, and should not be taken as the only truth. According to the movie, Cube was the smartest, the one with talent, the one who knew not to sign a contract... but smashed up an office with a bat to get royalties he thought he was owed, which (in the movie) was a brilliant move. Reality was more than slightly different.

    • @noize2040
      @noize2040 9 років тому +8

ERIC EPPS everybody in the Industry has fucked up deals. It wasn't only NWA.
Guns N Roses went through the same shit, Axel Rose ended up taking the lions share of the income and bought the naming rights. Prince had a shittier deal because Prince wrote his lyrics, played guitar and produced his own shit.
Yeah, 95% of artists and bands today have Shitty deals... the only people that are getting Great Deals are artists that write their own music and can do live shows...
and own their own labels or are signed to a Indie Label.
If your signed to Universal, Warner, etc... your getting fucked at this moment.

You all have excellent points. To be in the music & film industry, you have to literally "sell your soul" in a sense...... Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'm happy for the success of the "Straight Outta Compton" movie, for the original members of N.W.A. can be compensated and today's rap audience can hear other music besides "trap rap" & watered down pop......

Damn, heller really hates Cube. Give Cube some credits instead of talking shit about him on something that happened 20 years ago. Ice Cube is the reason Eazy-E started rapping and Ice Cube wrote most of the lyrics in N.W.A

+Janiel Bedminster Yes I know, but why didn't Heller just embrace Cube and cared for him just like he did for Eazy-E. N.W.A would've stayed together alot longer if only Jerry could've been fair with everyone not only with EazyE, ofc someone (Cube) will get ''jealous'' of that cause its unfair for him and the others.

Yeah Paul Giamatti did an excellent job at portraying that lying piece of shit. I think they all did very well in their roles. I definitely wasn't expecting it to be as great of a movie as it was regardless of how interesting the story actually is or how much of a fan of them I was/am since I was a kid. In a time where you have to be skeptical about how most movies and projects are going to turn out because so much of it is shit, I was very glad that they took the effort to make the movie right and I definitely think it deserved the Oscar it was nominated for.

Jerry Heller is what we call a typical Record label owner back in the day, if you watch the movie Cadillac Records this is just how they roll. Jerry isn't lying, he just doesn't think what he's doing is stealing, he's using and old business model where the artist always end up broke. We studied this case in school when I studied music business and film. What NWA actually claimed Jerry stole was actually money they owed. They were spending money before they even earned it. For example. If I gave you a two million dollar budget to create an album as advance, i expect you to pay back that 2 million dollars after the sales of the album has passed - to recuperate what i had lost in investing on the production of your album. Now - most rappers have a tendency to touch that advance money / album budget and usually start blurring the lines between an advance - and revenue. Now the revenue is actually what the rappers can take home and START spending. So when they did the math of their album sales and thought they were getting less than what they were supposed to they started thinking Jerry stole that amount from them - when in reality the amount that was taken from them was actually the amount given to them to MAKE the album PLUS other expenses like (CHAINS, LAMBORGHINIS, ESCORTS, DRUGS, CLOTHES, ETC.) Just thought I'd let some kids know this since I see a lot of youth entering the entertainment business and it's easy to get jerked if you don't know how it works.

Cube was the original godfather of gangster rap. He wrote all the songs he wrote all of eazy shit in the early years. NWA needed cube more than he needed them. Dre was the music guy and cube was the main writer of the group. Without his rhymes n bars it would never have worked. Ren was okay but him and yella I feel just kinda tagged along. Dre's beats cubes lyrics and eazy"s voice n money was all that was ever needed. cubes lyrics made the biggest impact for the group Idk if he was getting ripped off for real but I don't feel like cube has any reason to lie about it. N if Dre eventually left for the same reasons then something must have been going on. There's no smoke without 🔥

I believe in the whole "three sides to every story" theory, but when it's just your side and a bunch of people on the other side telling the same story about you, it kinda makes me think

Jerry could be telling the truth when he said he did not steal money from the members of NWA. Artists in ruthless signed slave deals so as long as Jerry/Eazy pays Dre, Cube, Ren, D.O.C. their pittance in accordance to the contract then Jerry and Eazy did not steal, they merely exploited their artists.

Ice cube didn't have money because he wasn't signed into a share of NWA until Jerry illegally tried to sign him without letting him even reading the papers or letting him show his lawyer. That's probably why he lived with his parents

LMAO !!!!! ROTFL !!!!! I laugh when I hear that Ice Cube was jealous of Eazy-E because I know that's SIMPLY not true especially since Ice Cube wrote all of Eazy-E lyrics and Ice Cube's verses are among the most memorable in the group in which fans sung with them every night when they toured in 1989 so Jerry needs to have several seats
this is a classic of industry bullshit.....as Yella said, they were young and didn't know about contracts so you know what happens when that factor is involved....this is why the industry likes them young because the young is the most easiest to manipulate especially if they are from the hood and grew up in poverty & have no knowledge of contracts....
Dr Dre: "When Ice Cube left, we were foolishly looking at him like he was turning his back on the group & being a traitor. Cube turned out to be the smartest one in the group when he made that decision not to sign that contract for the $75,000 check".......why ? because after N.W.A's 2nd album, Dre started noticing that his checks were getting light too.....it's called waking up.....LEARN THE BUSINESS !! The Music Business is 10% Music & 90% Business......Dre & Cube simply knew their worth and took control before it was too late
