Hi Joric! I heard that when applying for a NIF, one must have a Portuguese representative? I am planning to come to Portugal for vacation and would like to obtain a NIF and open a bank account while I am there. If I can do it by myself, I would rather do that. Thanks!
Perfect. Thanks for clarifying the NIF is not the social security card I think you mentioned you've been waiting on several months. Not sure what the SS card is for in PT. I think I'm mixing stuff up here.
SS is a number that you need to pay for your retirement. To work in Portugal you need to have SS. If you come to Portugal being retired to live you dont need the SS number. If you start to work you can ask for that number in any district public office. If you work for a company they need to have your SS number to send them the monthly fees for your retirement. The company pay 24% of your wage and you pay 11% of your wage for the SS. If the company said that they going to pay 1300€ (that meaning the cost for the company is 1300€ more all that 24% and insurance). SS (Segurança Social - Social security). If you work for yourself, like a independent lawyer or anything else, you need to pay yourself about 30%. In that number is going to be all the money you contribute for SS to calculate your pension later on.
Thanks very much Joric. I just let you and everyone else know that the link you mention no longer works. You can search for ''NIF" and yes you see the same results as in your video, BUT when you click on the link you see the page you need to apply for the NIF for just a split second and then suddenly the page always redirects to a login page [how can you login with a NIF username when you don't yet have a NIF!]. Really annoying, but it appears that that is how it is now. 🤦♂ . I tried to post the relevant links in this comment, but UA-cam then deletes the comment minutes later if I do that 😒 . If you go to a Finanças office these days usually they will give you an appointment for around 2 weeks later to come back and make your application. They won't see you there and then. ☹ . Thanks anyway! cheers JB
So sorry to hear this! I made this video in June and I was hoping it was last. Guess Not. Looks like I will need to do an updated video on the NIF process. Hopefully you can get your NIF soon!
The NIF is the taxpayer number and when I made the video during the height of covid, they allowed people to go online and register. After messaging with a government official, you can't really do that at the moment unless you have an attorney or accountant here in Portugal obtain a NIF (taxpayer number) on your behalf - eportugal.gov.pt/en/noticias/pedido-de-nif-online-para-cidadaos-estrangeiros-e-recem-nascidos
If you already have those, you should be able to go to a financas location and sign up easily. Or, you might be able to do it online if you get a lawyer or third party to sign up for you. EU Citizens: You don’t necessarily need a representative fiscal (fiscal representative) to get a NIF and you can get a NIF simply by going to Finanças. However, you may find it easier to ask a friend or pay a company to be your fiscal representative rather than going through the hassle of attending an appointment. Non-EU citizens: You normally need a representative fiscal (fiscal representative). If you’re applying for a visa, many consulates and embassies, particularly in the US, are now asking for a NIF when you make the visa application (so before you move to Portugal). So, to get one, you’ll either have to fly to Portugal and head to Finanças with a tax representative or just pay a company to do it for you. Most people find the second option easier. Get a NIF online Cost: €50-1000 There are an increasing number of companies and individual lawyers that can get you a NIF by giving them power of attorney and letting them act as your fiscal representative. Prices range considerably with the average price being around €200, although some companies charge as much as €500 or even €1,000. Paying €1,000 for a NIF doesn’t make sense. Unlike say filing your tax return or assisting with your visa application, there really isn’t any skill or expertise involved and paying more doesn’t mean a better quality of service. Bordr.io can get you a NIF within around 3 days for $150
Hello So when I come for my 90 day visit I can apply for a NIF? and then return to the US? or will I have to be in the process of becoming a resident? Thank You for more great info and your videos are great without the fluff :)
You can apply for a NIF without living here, or being a resident, but, I believe you have to use an attorney to help with that. Attorneys are very affordable here compared to the US. Might be worth it.

@@Mr.S65 At one point you could apply online remotely, but that was short-lived. It sounds like if one ( NON EU, eg US citizen) is physically present in PT then one can get a NIF in the office instead of having a Representative?
