I feel like such an idiot. I spent about an hour troubleshooting this and not even five minutes into the video, you mentioned changing the callsign. "Wait...did I forget to change my callsign!?" Sure enough, that's exactly what it was. Thank you!
I have to say I've been working on this for a few months and even replaced my Raspberry Pi Zero w card thinking I broke it. After watching this video, I'm back on the air! So grateful, am subscribed and looking forward to learning more from you.
Thank you so mutch for this superb tutorial. In about one month i will receive my callsign. I graduated ham exam an i bougted my radio and the hotspot. 73 from YO4
I'm new to DMR and digital. This was a LifeSaver video as far as I'm concerned. Watched another one from someone else, he left out SOOOOO much stuff it's almost unbelievable. Great job. Thanks for the Help!
You make it look so easy you leave out alot of information especially how much space in your computer this program takes!! So no i have a jumbo hot spot i cant use because i cant afford a computer with a gig of space to waste on one program!! Thanks for making it look so simple but not talking about the fact you need an expensive computer to program it. .. i find out in alot of these videos there is always SOMETHING you leave out you take fro granted that we need to know..
I am a noob also and I learned a lot from this video and also amateurradionotes.com/pi-star.htm You don't need to install anything on the PC. All of the programming is on the Pi sd card. The Pi has a server and you connect to the pi-star program through a browser (Chrome, Firefox etc) on your PC or Mac at the address pi-star/ (pi-star.local/ on a Mac). The above link is a great starting point. HTH
Thanks sir! I've been beating my head against the wall for the last 3 days trying to get this to work. Been on DStar for a few years and decided to give DMR a try with this GD73 I recently picked up. Figured why not for 80 bucks, something new to try/learn. Was getting pretty frustrated until I found your vid! Thanks!
Thank you so much. Not only are you helping your customers, but others as well. I just got my hotspot up and running and was getting real bad results. I am down to .02 now. Thanks!
I just spent hours messing with the hotspot. Five minutes of your video and found the solution, was the TX/RX Offset not being set to -475. Thanks for the video.
I'm very grateful how complete you made the steps of your presentation. If it worked for an old phart, it will work for anyone. Yes... you did slow down (not too much) and yes I'm old, but If whatever happenes before you open the tin wasn't clear, it was by the time the contents had been poured out (sorry about the analogy) Cheers.. and thank you for making the video.
Erick, many many thanks, I have spent hours trying to setup my hotspot and now I see where I was going wrong. There are so many videos on setup, but yours actually showed the setup! 73s and I hope to speak to you soon! M0NBB
Excellent Video. I followed the previous video and had a couple of difficulties, but it is all worked out. One thing I would like to add regarding the DMR ID. If you are running the Jumbo Spot in private mode, the DMR ID in the Jumbo Spot and the radio need to be the same. If they are different, the radio and Jumbo Spot do not communicate and you get an error on the live logs that says "RF User ####### rejected". If you operate the Jumbo Spot in public mode, any DMR ID will be able to access the Jumbo Spot. At least that is one of the problems I had. The reason I had this problem is I assumed you needed a separate DMR ID for each device, and I applied for and received 2 DMR IDs.
How did he get to that screen just to set it up? What is a dashboard? How do you get the "control software". This is the problem most people have that are new! A lot of folks would love to follow these instructions if they just knew how to get to where this video started!
I guess there was an earlier video that said what to connect to what (physical connection, that is); also another video said to flash an image, but it was a strange video with a computer voice. Where does that come in?
Thank you! I'll be getting my first DMR HT in a few days. Already have my dvmega/pi setup for dstar, and going to setup DMR also (yes, they do DMR lol). Just got my DMR ID today. Yaaaay!
What about firewall rules? Ports? Everyone is behind a firewall now and a video describing what ports and rules need to be configured in a firewall to allow pi-star to communicate behind it. Thanks mate.
I hear people talking on TG 3 through my local repeater but not through the pi-star. When I look at the Brandmeister website, I don't see TG 3 at all, however North America is listed as TG 93. Does this mean the pi-star can only listen to talk groups listed on the Brandmeister website? - KD2LNG
Hi Eric, just found your video as I’ve just bought a DMR hotspot and was needing to find out how to program it. Thank you, I may consult it again when I can set mine up. Phillip - MM7BCL
In my case, I can not receipt any talk group pop up in my dashboard but I can transmit my signal to my hotspot (my dashboard respond it). Shall we need to have same frequency with other member in TG?. My Echo test also not working. I still stuck in a couple weeks // OMG. Thank you.
Okay so now I followed this and got it programmed. But how do I now get my radio to contact it? Do I go change every tx/rx frequency in my codeplug to analog and this frequency? My brain doesn't know what is next.
i have a question, for the frequency you added 446.500 is that going to be the frequency of the local dmr repeater thats near me that i use? or is this just a random frequency ? can i use 446.500 myself if it is just a random frequency?
Reverted back to this video after not using my hotspot for months. I factory reset the hotspot after I was not hearing any traffic or seeing in activity on the BM Dashboard. On the BM Dashboard, when I click on my hotspot in the menu on the left there is a red power symbol next to my hotspot. So I factory reset. Followed the steps in this video. Still not seeing or hearing any traffic and the red power symbol is still displayed. Any ideas?
Great video. I am a neophyte. On the expert panel after setting the offset. So I make a transmission. Where do I see the bit error rate? And, when you set the transmit (simplex frequency I presume) in Pi-Star do I have to set the same frequency on the HT?
ive setup up fusion and it works ok but ive got the same radio as him and it wont connect to the hotspot is seems fusion is a lot easier to get into than DMR
Nice job, TYVM. But at the end, what do you mean by only transmit on time slot 2? That is based on the repeater talkgroup correct? If not what/where is that setting in pi-star...
I'm glad I found this. The only change I had to make was the RXOffset on mine is -475. It doesn't say anything about the TXOffset though, so I'm leaving that at 0.
@@g0fvt Sometimes it's the same, sometimes it's not. WHen I set my board to the required TX offset, my radio wouldn't receive. Tune into a parrot or echo talk group and use that to tune your receive offset, just like you do your transmit.

Hi Eric, I've been through two YT videos trying to get my HotSpot working but seem to have a problem. In your video @ 22:37 you can see 7 lines of data in the Gateway Screen, all ever get is 1 line so not sure why that is. But I just cannot get any response from anywhere. I've just put a call out to Echo on 9990, no response? I got the hot spot because I wanted to remove the RF link to my local repeater as a probable cause of no response but even that scheme seems to have failed?
my dmr id is from marc do i need to setup one from brandmeister to use with the hotspot or can i use my marc dmr id the status boxes on dash go green then red again
Hi Eric, I’m just getting into the Amateur Radio hobby and as my first radio I purchased an HT with DMR capability. I found this video very informative and it answered a lot of the questions I had about connecting to talk groups, etc. The question I still have though is, does it work the same way for repeaters that are advertised as supporting DMR? Thanks in advance, 73
So I got one of these hats, and now Brandmeister requires a login and registration of the hotspot to get it going on DMR. Couldn't for the life of me figure out why I couldn't hear anything. Finally checked the logs... Login to the master has failed, retrying network ... Now I'm waiting for up to 48 hours for an admin to manually confirm my account. Was so excited when I got my GD-77 to try this out with.
Hi, can you please do a video on how to set up 2 handhelds to use with a duplex hotspot board? How to do the codeplugs and how to set up pistar for duplex operation.
Eric, thanks for the great video. I have one question, when you change talk groups do you need to key the ptt so the hotspot knows what room to monitor?
all good except the last bit. It's a simplex hotspot so TS1 will always be disabled. That doesn't mean e.g. that a TG on TS1 should be programmed in the code plug on TS2 because the hotspot TS1 is disabled. The Hotspot will translate for you for TGs which are set to TS1. It will receive and then Tx on the net on the codeplug set TS... Am I wrong?
Hi Eric a very informative video iv recently built a hotspot using a raspberry pi zero with a mmdvm hat primarily to use on ysf iv followed lots of UA-cam videos but for some reason the hotspot will not receive when I tx to it but I am hearing stations chatting on the cq-uk room which is what iv set it up for also I’m not able to tx the the parrot server. Any tips of where to go from here would be much appreciated 73
I wouldn't be guessing in the advanced menu. All the hats will be different. Its the nature of the modulation type. While you had a value to fall back on, that someone else optimized, it may make it worse on another radio, even if they are the same model. If you need to change the freq offset, then most likely you need to calibrate the 2.75mhz deviation as well. A cheap nano vna is all that is needed. IMHO, it should be done right, or left alone.
Thank you very much very helpful video. I need more information about DMR transceiver set up. Could you kindly show me how to configure a minimum set up on TYT MD-380 ? Thank you in advance.

Hello hope your having a great day. I bought a pi zero flashed. and all I need to do is enter my info but I can't seem to view the device on my pc. My comment and question I'm sure is a typical one. I can't seem find a video or tutorial on how to install pi-star voice digital software application into the pc. I know installing software is not a difficult task I downloaded the file that pertained to pi zero and all i see is a small file and a image file no application file and all videos to the hotspot start with the software already installed in their pc. Also no one explains the function of the hdmi, and the other ports I know your video was not on the pi zero just thought I'd mention that.
Eric, I had followed your programming and it looks like I got the pi-star programmed but the hotspot does not see my radioddity gd-77 and I am not sure I programmed it right but when I key it does not show up. My dmr on the same radio works through the repeater. Any ideas?
Thank you thank you thank you, I was about ready to take this thing out back and hit with a hammer to see if I could get to work. I bought it from a company that told me it was supposedly 100% set up all's I needed to do was add my Wi-Fi info.
I love you, man. You saved a LOT of headscratching for me. Great stuff. Connecting to YSF was a breeze. DMR is a different animal.
Didn't see any other comments on this, but 438.800 (@5:25) is a valid 70cm frequency in the U.S. -- no MARS/CAP mod needed.

Last Q Sir, can this jumbo be set up for DMR & Dstar bought ? 🎉
I’m having trouble with ailunce programming by hand. Can you do a video on it?
Do you have to have a radio ID to recieve and not transmit ? I've been at this for weeks and cannot hear anything. No repeaters, or through a hotpot.

Any ideas?
Thank you Eric for this great video
Thank you thank you thank you, I was about ready to take this thing out back and hit with a hammer to see if I could get to work. I bought it from a company that told me it was supposedly 100% set up all's I needed to do was add my Wi-Fi info.
Excellent video!! Helped me get my pi star configured. With the offset the BER is 0.0%!!! Awesome!! Keep it up!!! W9JTC
