Kenmore 158 series sewing machines are among the best that was ever made. They were powerful 1.2 amp motors. Most of the time they are capable of doing pretty much anything anyone ever needs to do. They're very common and in my opinion outperforms singer saw machines immensely. I have several of these machines, both free arm and flatbed they're wonderful machines to sew with
When my wife brought home her mother-in-law's old Singer 66, it was locked up. I think she said it had sat for 20-30 years. Lots of oil and forceful nudging, it finally broke free. Sews rather nicely now. Great video.
This was a very nicely done video, the camera work is great, your voice comes across clearly and I identified with it closely as I've been doing this for a couple of years now too. If you don't know already, one thing I know which may help you is that the balance wheel should always be rotated to the front. It's OK to wiggle it back and forth a little, but that's it. I have a whole selection of vintage Kenmores, only one of them turns to the back. It's 54 years old and I think it's might be the only one sold by Sears that worked that way. (I could be wrong here!!) There are a few exceptions in different vintage machines , but I don't believe very many. So keep going, keep learning and please keep making such good videos - we can always learn from one another.
You're right, repairing old sewing machines is a lot of fun and in my area you can find them for free all the time. I have an old Brother sewing machine that was completely frozen and after a good cleaning and some oil it works like a new one. Looking forward to the rest of the videos.
Thank you for this video. I just got the same machine yesterday at a thrift store - it needs work, but I love it. I am looking forward to your next video
I recently found the same model as yours, in lavender too! It is also seized up but the seller used some oil and it did turn, albeit stiffly. It is very dirty and I need to do more work on it. It’s my first time so I’m looking forward to following along with you
I found your video fascinating! I inherited an old kenmore similar to yours in the original box with all the paperwork…still threaded and ready to go. Set it up and tested it…ran great and then the string got all noted up and tried to take apart and fix…have no idea what I’m doing as I am new to sewing. It would be cool to share a beginner friendly video “introduction to sewing “. Just a thought; thanks for sharing and I will come back to this video for reference.
You might want to get felt pads to go at the base of your thread posts to protect the paint of your lovely machine. The UA-camr Sewing Machine Repair Guy sells pads and silicone bobbin-winding tires in a variety of colours.
Hi do you have a video on how to thread that exact machine. I am having problem with my thread popping when I start sewing with my kenmore 158. Please send or create a video on that thx,
I picked up a portable Domestic model 808 at an auction for a few dollars... it has a problem sticking in reverse (won't un-reverse) I want to fix this but I can't even figure out how to get at the parts behind the stitch length knob and reverse button. It looks a lot like this one incl. The flip up bobbin winder door
Did you ever make psrt 2? My Kenmore 158 series is so stuck … I can not get it to even move at all. The belts turn with the crank wheel but NOTHING else. I’ve now oiled it very very well, still nothing. Perhaps you know of another video I can watch? Thank you!
Hi there...I recently bought a Kenmore sewing machine... and I notice the presser foot is slightly twist to the left side..how can I fix this...tanks..
I have a 158.950…I an only get it to straight stitch-I Putin cam for zig zag-set it on 4 the needle moves far to the right but still only straight stitch. Any ideas? I have cleaned and oiled. Help!
What happened? Is there ever going to be a part 2,3,4, etc. for this machine? I just got one with cabinet, and all accessories for $2.75! Mine is not frozen, but everything turns stiffly
@@TheMintedMaiden I know you are busy - it's just that you did such a great job showing us how to clean and restore your machine! I am wondering how your machine is working as well. I just picked up the same model and it needs some work. Anyway, loved your video and appreciate your sharing your process!
@@SoniaBDorsey I kind of got carried away acquiring used sewing machines. I've repaired 2 Kenmoores, but have not got to this one yet. Aside: Darn you are cute!

I received a sewing machine book that you recommended. I’m super excited to learn more about sewing and machines too .

Awesome! These are fantastic machines. My belts just came in the mail so I’m hoping to do some more work on it this week
Do you have a video for replacing the belt on the kenmore model 90 sewing machine?

I have this machine 158.902. This is 3rd one I have bought. This recent one is hardly moving it is so gummed up.
Disculpa esa maquina es de 2 bandas tambien?
2 belts with a reduction pulley is a deluxe feature, once you’ve used that you’ll never put up with a single belt again.

Life happened! 😂 I’m a busy lady and I haven’t gotten around to working on many of my projects. If/when I do get around to it, I’ll post a video!
