Funny, I had just filled my Lamy and thought "Man, this piston seems a little stiff, guess it's just that way." I've only had the pen a month or so and it was a little stiff out of the box compared to my Pelikan's. Then I saw this video, talk about a WORLD of difference! Thanks Brian, it really is amazing how much difference this made for my brand new pen! It's actually BETTER than new now! :-)
So I just got my last 2000. Gave it the initial clean and used a neat trick to grease up the piston. I happen to have a couple of bottles of the liquid silicone grease that comes with TWSBI pens. Unscrewed the grip section and dropped a couple of drops of the silicone grease in the body. Operated the piston to spread it around inside the barrel. And that's all there's to it !
Thanks for adding your experience and safer greasing method which avoids the use of a Q tip cotton bud. Cotton buds shed fibres especially when they have to be pushed and pulled in and out of narrow openings. Those fibres will get into the capillary of the feed and screw up ink flow.
Thank you so much! I just flushed my L2K that I haven’t used for almost 2 years now and I was feeling my piston not being as smooth as I wanted it to be. This video saved my life!
Something I already do when I don't want to disassemble the piston of other pens to make it a little smoother but I done this as soon as I got my lamy 2000, it makes it many times smoother than it was when new.
Oh my god, thank you so much, the piston became so stiff and after it hit the point with the grease it got instantly so smooth and I barely used silicone grease! Thank you!
Brian, What prevents the silicone from getting into the ink and therefore into the feed? I thought it was a no-no to get silicone into any part of the feed?
Dave Dontgiveout well since silicone grease i supposed to keep items waterproof so if it goes in the feed or the nib its not going to let it through cause its waterproof
My plunger is stuck in the up position and the cap doesn’t turn it. So, I took the barrel and loaded ink into it with a syringe. The barrel is full. I don’t think the plunger will ever work again.
2014 I know... seven? years ago. What is the list of lubricating inks. I know that the Noodler's Eel inks are piston filler friendly. Is this true for house brand inks for piston filling pens in general? I know that my decades old Pelican responded nicely to Noodler's Eel Blue Ink. Both the piston fill and also the nib.
My lamy2000 is leaking from the nib 😢 any tips would be really helpful.… don’t know if I did something wrong…. After closing cap there is always leaked ink in the cap and on the pen. Also now it has started pouring ink out while writing…. 😭
I think It can be filled with a sirynge as an eyedropper instead of using the piston... this way you can be sure the pen is really fill up... Thank you for you excellent review trick. Eivissa.
Just bought a new Lamy 2k and was wondering if the stiff piston was normal. This trick transforms use of the piston mechanism. Only a bit of lube is necessary, then swab it out with a clean Qtip and wipe off any residue. This transforms the action of the piston. Now, it turns easily. Lamy, you should do this at the factory... I have many good new and vintage pens, and the Lamy 2k (M) is excellent. I love this thing.
I'd imagine though that this method leaves excess silicone grease in the ink chamber beyond the throw of the plunger. Doesn't this interact with the ink in the pen?
I suppose you could use the other end of the qtip to remove the excess, the silicone grease is like a barrier. It doesn't mix well with ink, so you don't want to have silicone grease in your feed or on the nib as it will hinder ink flow. As far as interactions go, they don't interact with each other chemically.
Pratik, thanks for sharing your experience. Obviously by now I've had to plunge ahead (pun fully intended) and everything seems to have worked out great. Love my 2000!
I just did it after seeing this video, and I wouldn't have expected to work so well !!! My Lamy 2000, despite being new, had a piston that was a tad hard to operate and was squeaking. Now it is smooth as buttered glass! Thanks for the tip, I have thought about it before, but I was reluctant to try it, my biggest concern was to put silicon in the ink reservoir, thinking it could alternate the ink flow. But it seems like it has no side-effects.
Hello, quick question: does your Lamy's clip move up and down and side to side???? Just got a Lamy 2000 FP and my clip moves, I have been reading online and many complain about this!
My first lamy 2000 and ink samples are on their way from Goulet Pens! Could I use an ink syringe to fill this pen via the same way this cleaning tip shows (directly in the body)?
Yes, you can do that but it would take some time for the ink to work its way down through the feed and be ready to write. The 2000 is one of the easiest pens to ink up with from the nib, so you don't see a lot of people doing it this way. - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company I just ordered a lamy 2k from you, not here yet. That being said I could see using a syringe to get that last bit of ink from the bottle.
The Goulet Pen Company Used this technique on the new pen and two much older (never greased!) 2000's a friend recently gave me. Works a treat. (Great for Pelikan's too.)
What are your favorite inks to use in this, EF? I've noticed that the Lamy ink is way too wet and Noodler's is way too dry and results in regular hard starts. Pelikan Edelstein is the best I've found for it so far.
Hi Brian, This is Joe, one of the winners of your Thanks-give-away contest last year. Really enjoying the Lamy 2000. It's become my everyday pen. I only use Diamine Majestic Blue in this pen. When I do grease it up as you showed, do I need to use the q-tip to remove the excess grease or is it ok to just ink up the pen and carry on writing? Thanks again, and really enjoy the videos.
Hey Joe! Glad you're enjoying your pen :) When you're greasing it up, you really don't need a lot of grease on the q-tip, just a light coating. You're not trying to get globs of it on there or anything, so there hopefully shouldn't be much extra to have to remove. Make sense?
It looks like you should be able to do this greasing trick with any of the Pelikan piston fillers, because their nibs screw out. The main caveat is not to get any of the silicone on the nib.
No, it's not necessary to re-grease that often. I would say only a couple times a year, especially if you're feeling resistance with the piston. - Colin
Hello folks, I was cleaning out my ink so that I can grease up the piston and by mistake I dropped my LAMY in the cup of water with the end cap extended. Do you know if this presents any issues to the pen or when adding the grease as you show here?
The m800 and m1000 do, the others can be disassembled, but not easily. Of course, that's just talking about the piston mechanisms, the nib units are easily removed from all the Souvrän Pelikans. -Brian Goulet
Hey Brian, I have been using my Lamy 2000 for quite some time now and only recently I have come across an issue of it leaking at the section that divides that holds the nib from the rest of the pen. Is there anyway I can fix this issue? I mean it's my favorite edc pen.
This is not the best idea. It is too much silicone grease, resulting in poorer adhesion of the ink on paper, and the rod used in conjunction with many small fibers can affect the flow of ink. It would be better to use a pointed wooden stick. Only the top gets a little silicone grease. Best rotate the plunger completely down and then gently touch the edge near the piston. If necessary, this can be repeated.
Got a brand new lamy 2000 today that came in with a squeaky piston, this fixed it right up! Thank you very much for the help.

Total game changer! Just did this on my Lamy 2000 and it is suuuuper smooth now. It was starting to get tough to move the piston.
Something I already do when I don't want to disassemble the piston of other pens to make it a little smoother but I done this as soon as I got my lamy 2000, it makes it many times smoother than it was when new.
Just tried this on my Lamy 2000 Stainless Steel and you are right, it improved the piston movement from the when I first bought it. Thanks for tip!
This is genius! Just changed the whole house water filters so I have food grade silicone grease on hand 🙌🏼.
I greased my 2000 following your guide. It's GREAT and thanks very much.
For once, real life repair was as easy as the video made it look. My Lamy 2000 is just like new after 2 years of every day use. Thanks!
wow - mind blown !!!!!! Thanks !!!! My pen feels better than new
Honestly I thought about doing this, but never actually did it!
Thank you Brian!
My old Pelikans' pistons never been this smooth!
Good tip! Disassembling a piston filler can be a bit intimidating for beginers with this mechanism. Definately worth trying this method out!
What a trick! Seems obvious but it just never occurred to me 😂. Worked great for me!!
Awesome procedure!
Do you find that the ink window on this pen is pretty much useless?
Yes
This did wonders to my leaky LAMY thank you!!
This should work on a piston converter, though you may not be able to use a q tip. I’m thinking a toothpick might work
Oh my god, thank you so much, the piston became so stiff and after it hit the point with the grease it got instantly so smooth and I barely used silicone grease!
Thank you!
My Lamy 2000 (that I bought from Goulet Pen Company) leaks into the cap. Even when stored nib up. There has got to be something to fix this.
Great information-thanks!
Brian,
What prevents the silicone from getting into the ink and therefore into the feed? I thought it was a no-no to get silicone into any part of the feed?
It's hydrophobic so the ink would not mix with the grease.

+Jeff Paige You don't want to use so much that it leaves excess. You don't need a lot. -Brian Goulet
+The Goulet Pen Company and no it doesn't interact with the pen, it's an inert material. -Brian Goulet

Awesome, glad to hear it!
I use this trick for my vintage Montblanc 224. u can remove the hole unite too.
How can i fix the same problem on my pelikan 800? Please help...
Can you do this on the lamy 80 too?
Hello, quick question: does your Lamy's clip move up and down and side to side???? Just got a Lamy 2000 FP and my clip moves, I have been reading online and many complain about this!
You really over estimated my reaction to this

Hi, many thanks for your reviews/advice.
Please mention how many types of nibs are available in LAMY 2000.
Prices also plz.
Best Regards,
My lamy 2000 steel leaks a drop of ink (around the nib) everytime I close the cap. Why is that so? What's the remedy?
I was hoping to find this question and an answer. The search continues.

Great imparting Bri. Q-tips to the fore. Tallyho !
Would you do this for every clean, as in every refill of ink?
No, it's not necessary to re-grease that often. I would say only a couple times a year, especially if you're feeling resistance with the piston. - Colin
Hi Brian and/or anyone, can I use Krytox grease instead of the silicone grease?
3:00 is that armstrong gravitas lube??
If you've done that with armstrong gravitas, how did it work?
Hello folks, I was cleaning out my ink so that I can grease up the piston and by mistake I dropped my LAMY in the cup of water with the end cap extended. Do you know if this presents any issues to the pen or when adding the grease as you show here?
Thanks! I had this issue just 2 hours ago!
Great timing!
Can you only do this when your pen has just been washed, and not when it is inked up, or...?
The pen should be cleaned out and dry.
I don't even have a Lamy why am I watching this
Do you have one now?
@@superwellplayed no :(

Which modern Pelikan fountain pens are easily disassembled?
The m800 and m1000 do, the others can be disassembled, but not easily. Of course, that's just talking about the piston mechanisms, the nib units are easily removed from all the Souvrän Pelikans. -Brian Goulet
The Goulet Pen Company Thanks, Brian!
Disassemble Lamy 2000
Hey Brian, I have been using my Lamy 2000 for quite some time now and only recently I have come across an issue of it leaking at the section that divides that holds the nib from the rest of the pen. Is there anyway I can fix this issue? I mean it's my favorite edc pen.
This pen was made the year my dad was born

Start at 2:25 in x2 speed.
So what is the trick? Besides not pulling it appart like a maniac
Sorry Brian but "Greasing stiff pistons" lol, couldn't resist.
Maybe I'd get more views on my video if I titled it that ;)
The Goulet Pen Company more views if you ACTUALLY did that ;P
Thank you
