I understand that. And people should also understand you won't catch large fish from the surf like you do when you're deep sea fishing. However, you can fish pretty cheap from the beach and still catch interesting sized species for dinner. I fish with a 10ft Shimano rod ($50) + 5000 Rapala Arachnid reel ($50) and a 6ft Drasry cast net ($40). From where I'm at (Colombia) I've caught 1-5lb catfish (we don't throw them back), 0.5-1lb snappers and pompano. Heck, I've even catched pompano with my cast net!

I don't even care if I catch anything sometimes (I release anyway) I just enjoy being on the water.
In N. Alabama I see Eagles, Egrets, Heron, Deer, Racoons, occasionally an Alligator, once a Bear, and too many snakes.
Never more at peace than on the water with the engine off, phone off, and no skiers in site. 😊

Try that with a charter boat. They may not even put you on anything. It will still cost you. Learning from your or other another person's mistakes or interpretations is invaluable.

Got me a 15ft Triumph with a 1984 Yamaha 70hp(a beast..runs like a top..starts first try every spring & flies) on a barely used trailer for $4K... 5yrs ago. Only use it about 20-25x a year but have only put about $500 into it (seats, used oil tank, o-rings, spark plugs, impellor, guide rails for trailer) in 5yrs..feels like a win.

So just to give some comparison from this setup and location in Sunny Florida. Im in NE Ohio and we fish Lake Erie mostly for Walleye and Trout these days. The current limit on Lake Erie in the 🇺🇲 is 6 (15" minimum) walleye and up to 5 Trout threw the end of August. To catch Trout you need to be out in 72' plus feet of water (Approximately 5 miles out of most of the easter Ohio ports). Now my boats paid for, And its a older boat (1997) So im just going to give you the daily operating cost. We trailer the boat to the lake every trip, So there's a easy $60.00 in truck fuel. Then there's Boat fuel $4.00/gallon and we typically burn 18-20 gallons a trip to get out to the fish and return to port. So there's another $80.00 on the high side. Now add Bait,Ice,and food and drink. So we typically fish 3-4 people on the boat. And i always keep water and Gatorade in the cooler/Fridge so there's a easy $20.00 per trip. Ice and bait is easily another $25.00. So then there's the Insurance and Tow Boat policy. Tow Boat is $125.00 a season and my insurance on the boat is another $400.00 a season ($525.00 a season) And we typically make between 10-14 trips to the lake every yr from May 1st to November 1st. So at 12 trips a yr. The per trip cost is $44.00. So at this point your per trip cosr is $230.00 per trip. Now add in any lost or damaged tackle, Which with Steelehead (Trout) Is a pretty common thing to break or lose a complete set up on a rod ( Dipsy, swivels, leaders, Lure/spoon) And to replace just that tackle is about $35.00 for each rod. You lose the braided line off 1 rod and you're looking at over $35.00 just in line it self per rod. You could easily have a $450.00 to $500.00 trip if things where to go bad. Now this is NO maintenance on the Truck, Boat, or Trailer. Tear up a prop and thats a easy $150.00 - $200.00.

B.O.A.T. = Break Out Another Thousand. I feel your pocket pain. Ky boat and trailer are now 23 yrs old. I repowered my boat 2 years ago to the tune of 14,500. I've had electrical problems and had my wiring redone 3 yrs ago to the tune of 850. Trailer axel rusted out and broke 3 yrs ago. Tow and repair was 850. Yearly service of motor average 350 (I put on less than 75 hrs a year). It adds up but I love it. (I also don't catch anywhere near the number of fish you do) I boat in Long Island Sound and trailer @80 miles roundtrip maybe 20-25 trips a year. Seatow membership has gone up to 250 a year (worth it for peace of mid mostly) which I've used 3 times in past 20 years.

Hay Guy's. I got to ask just like many others are asking or feeling. What was the poupous for all this? Are you trying to make us feel sorry for you all going out and making these videos for us? Yes, we already know that going out with a boat and fishing the way you do is very expensive. If you're trying to tell us, it's too much to do this than you should stop going out so often. I enjoy watching you two so much, but a video like this makes me feel sorry you're spending so much to entertain us.
I will say it is fishing out in the ocean. It's not cheap, but it is fun. The cost is real, but when you look at it as entertainment you have to figure there is always a cost. No matter if you enjoy it, we enjoy watching. Thanks for sharing with us and for all the time and money you share with us every trip out.
    We love you both!
    Thanks Again,
    Carl

The video has 25k views, and a 97% "like" ratio...the "many" you are talking about are actually just a few. And I think it's pretty clear that the purpose was to go over the costs of offshore boat fishing. I don't think we ever complained or asked anyone to feel sorry, said several times the opposite in fact.

I fish in my retirement. I fish freshwater lakes and inshore saltwater. For freshwater I have a very high quality 16.25’ aluminum boat with latest electronics and I find your video very interesting. I considered cost and reliability in all my fishing related purchases. I also considered the ease of self service on my Honda outboard as required feature in my purchasing decision. My cost per trip is $67 using your 10 year depreciation model. My biggest expense yearly is storage at $1100 for six months of climate controlled storage. That’s a lot more than I expected.
The best deal is my saltwater expense. It’s my brother’s Grady White and he pays the whole tab. There is nothing better than a fishing partner that has an awesome boat. 😎

We live in NJ near the coast but drive down to the FL keys so we can fish affordably from the bridges. I always try to catch more in fish value than we spent, it's sort of a challenge. A few pinfish, some shrimp, catching some of your own bait and conserving bait can go a long way. Also some days for whatever reason are just not meant to be. Caught a 32" Pompano off long key bridge on a small piece of shrimp! Nobody could believe it but I have the photo to prove it :) I like how you discuss things like switching to 20# flourocarbon versus 30 and it can be like flipping a switch. Cool channel, I do wish you'd let Bryan catch more though!

I do a lot of shallow water fishing and it too gets VERY expensive. My Dargel Scout 210 with motor and trailer cost almost $55,000 along with a tower and canopy. I have 4 shark rigs with Penn Reels that are about $500 each and about 9 Med to heavy Ugly Stick rigs set for Red & Black Drum plus anything else. With 4 people each fish cost me an average of $145 each IF we limit out. Yes Boats & Harley Davidsons are Ka-Ching!

Terminal tackle will make or break your day. I'll pay double for Sampo ball bearing swivels and their coast lock snap swivels.
Been there and done that with lines being bitten off and losing a $30-40 lure and another $4-5 hook. Barracuda, Wahoo, and shark will cut through 80-100 pound test leader in a heart beat. Now all I'll use is the vinyl coated stranded cable and double crimps.
Puddin', don't get started on slow pitch jigging where you can lose 4 jigs in an hour.
On the plus side, get Darcie to sell Bonita strips. That will pay for lunch and a Land Shark or two.

You might want to try making your own chum, and sit it in a bag drifting away from you. The shark might follow the flow and not notice your fish.
I'll purchase Johnny's jigs, but the rods they recommend are a bit steep in pricing.
I'm fishing Daiwa Saltiga reels, which IMO are the best on the market. Their rods are made in China and IMO, for a $400-600 rod, shouldn't be made in China.

Offshore fishing absolutely cannot be compared to shore or inshore fishing as many try to do in the comments. Operating and owning a boat brings with it a freedom and flexibility that simply cannot be compared - in addition to the variety and size of fish to be caught. But of course the expense of owning and operating the boat is another story. I love my boat and absolutely love fishing, but gas is most definitely a factor - this is just a fact, not a complaint. Due to the variety of fish that can be caught off the boat different tackle is also required for different fishing scenarios. High Speed Wahoo trolling is very different then Sword fishing, trolling for Mahi, pulling planners (like Darcizzle is doing), bottom fishing, jigging (fast or slow), Deep Dropping, etc.... try that from shore, pier, or a lake - you can't. Most definitely you can buy fish cheaper in a super market, but what fun would that be? Fishing and boating is more than a hobby for most of us, its passion and lifestyle albeit an expensive one

We don't really get carried away with rods & reels, I'm sure we have more than most over the years, but have seen the greatest captain in FL use the most basic gear in the world and outfish everyone. Just had a reel spooled with braid for 64 bucks this week. 400yards.

the cost of fishing simply can not be compared to sponsored equipment. From the boat, the tackle, to the riggs. they started and had to build to this point. fishing is a hobby and can not be measured in cost. weather its pond sun fish, river bass or pelagic s we fish the budget we have.

Been following your channel for a while. I"ve said it before and I'll say it again Darcy is a ninja with a fillet knife! That said I'm glad you guys showed how much it costs to go fishing in a boat. Most people who go with you may see you fill up with gas and ice at the Buccee's and it'll run around a $100 and think that's not bad. They don't take into consideration the storage fee's (I live in a HOA neighborhood so no boats allowed at the house), insurance and other unforseen costs. I hit something with my prop last time out and bent the output shaft and prop. $$$ I now have two boats. I bought a new boat this year, my wife wanted something more comfortable so I got a Cobia 220DC w/200 Yamaha, and you know I offered my other boat a 20 year old 21.5"CC fishmaster w/225 Suzuki with 500 hours, for free to some family members and they turned it down. They didn't want the extra costs associated with boat owner ship like monthly storage and insurance and gas and registration. It's much cheaper for them to just go with me. I don't charge anyone any money to go with me. I'm not a commercial captain with a license. Besides I know I've been blessed and just want to share my blessings with others but I do feel your pain. So next time you fellas see guides offering 12 hour trips for $500-$600 offshore (Texas) think about how much it would cost you if it were your boat and then shell out the money 1 time instead of all year long!
