Thank you so much for this! I searched the internet tonight with one goal: to learn what cardamon was and how I might use it. You've made my night with this three-minute video!
Listen to both this fine farmer and Glen! I will admit when I want to add a kick, I will add a crushed black cardamom pod to my green cardamom pods I use for my coffee to certain notes in the said cardamom coffee I brew in my Briki/Ibrik/Cecve pot, which is 11.6 ounces and made of solid brass with a hand-carved wooden handle. Black cardamom and green cardamom are both used in Garam Masala blends, each family in India, Pakistan, and various other South Asian countries have their own takes on Garam Masala, just like they do with Chai.
Glen, I'm ashamed to say I'm just now finding your spice series after having subscribed over a year ago. I don’t know how I missed this. But, I'm here now and I gotta say thank you so much for these uploads. It's the perfect format. Succinct yet packed w all the necessary info. I hope you return to this with more from the big world of spice. Much gratitude.
Green cardamom is great in sweet and savory stuff. In India it is used in curries as well as desserts. Black cardamom is better in savory recipes. Also in cocktail Bloody Mary, according to the sitcom "Cheers".
Great video, thanks, not too much new for me apart from the 'bleached' cardamon, which I realise now happens naturally in my kitchen cupboard. I use green cardamon every day in tea and porridge to ward off winter demons. Gonna experiment with black cardamon more, until now I only used it in Indian five spice. Thanks again, and I really admire your kitchen!
In a Korma recipe online, it says use half a tsp of cardamom. Am I right in thinking this is half a teaspoon of cardamom seeds and I should ground the seeds?
Thanks for the lovely, simple, delicious recipes and helpful information you provide in your channel I’ve tried many recipes and it s in my recipe book now
I suffer with inflamed joints, I took so many ibuprofen I had an ulcer. So I researched natural anti inflammatories. Ive been drinking ginger tea with some added crushed chilli for 5 months and not needed an ibuprofen since. Im pain free. I also add a few crushed cardamom pods for flavour and its own health benefits, which are mostly to do with digestion. Iv never heard of the white cardamom. Im gonna get some of the black to try.
Thanks for this thorough explanation. I am trying to make a curry rub. I ordered green cardamom because I did not know any better. Going forward I will order the black cardamom. I am using it in a rub. Sounds like I should be ok. Do you agree?
Guilty as charged for being scandinavian hehe! I saw this spice boutique the other day that I don't think I've seen there before so they might be new. I need to bring my wallet and rucksack with me ...
Hello Glen, it's very enjoyable to watch your video. I am asking if I can excerpt some footage of close-up filming on the cardamom in your video, from 3:15 to 3:24 and from 2;19 to 2:24 for my show named Vietnam Discovery. We have a small segment discussing the use of cardamon and would love to feature these footage. We will give the credit to your channel in our show. Please let me know if it's possible. Thank you and have a nice day!
I use green cardamom often, but have never seen black cardamom, only read about it. I think I'll try to find some online. Will you be doing an episode on fenugreek? I'd like to know more about it, and it's another spice that I can't find.
And I do!!! My culinary world has opened up so much since I started using my own whole spices from the Indian market and discovering all the dishes from around the world that I can make with them!!!
Glen, at 1:43, you said .. that black cardamom is "part of the ginger family." Are you sure. I have googled, and cannot confirm this. On the other hand, many other places indicate that Green Cardamom is part of the ginger family. (See wikipedia etc.)
There's huge confusion between black cardamom and amm TSAO-KO... Isn't there. I only learned the difference from a Chinese friend in Yunnan. But there's a huge difference in flavour.
White cardemom has a completely different shape compared to green cardemom, and the taste is also very different, almost like black cardemom, but not as strong. And white cardemom is not real cardemom. Bleached green cardemom is still green cardemom.
I bought green ground cardamom for the first time, and I have to say, I'm not too impressed. Its basically a mixture of Vicks Vapor rub and chopped up Christmas trees.
Thanks for watching our video! ^^^^More info below the video^^^^ Please check out our channel and subscribe for 2 new videos a week.

As a black cardamom grower in Northern India in Himalayas . Sir, I can assure you it can even be used in desserts but its best with meat dishes.
This is what I have heard from here, too, in the U.S.
Thanks! 😊

Black Cardamom is good quality and 100 percentage organic
I see people recommending cardamom in coffee as a twist. It sounds like black cardamom would work better. Have you tried that?

Grind the seeds of the green pods and add to your coffee. Adding cinnamon also works well in coffee with cardamom

Ginger family 😐
Yep - part of the ginger family. Along with turmeric, galangal, the root we know as 'ginger', and a few other spices that we eat.
