What is a Food Forest?

  • Using permaculture principles, food production should mimic nature, which is always in a state of progression. A disturbed landscape such a major modification to the ecosystem by forces like forest fires or human interference, regenerates successionally, with pioneer species (grasses, forbes, sedges, etc) that require direct sunlight emerging first and progresses for decades or centuries to become a closed canopy forest. Rather than cultivate just annual vegetables in the pioneer state like most modern food gardens, a food forest or forest garden is developed with 7 or more layers of vegetation: the upper tree canopy, lower tree canopy, vines, shrubs, herbs, roots and fungi and progresses over time to become a mature forest.

    I’m happy for you Shawn! Lot of work you have put into making you own little slice of heaven! Fruit tree’s are are a long term project! Takes forever to see them mature! I have plum, apple, pear, apricot and cherry! Takes for ever! Planted red, white and black currants that are two years old just producing a bowl full this year! Grapes, apear to have the biggest crop! Black berries and raspberry are doing great! Containerized strawberries are doing great! Only have a 6th of a acre but it’s nice to see everything maturing! Just takes a long time and I’ve made mistakes with non native plants and trees! Then it’s getting the right minerals so I don’t have to fight bugs and disease! Still working on that! I live just south of Saint Louis MISSOURI so minerals washed away long ago!
    Thank Shawn appreciate the knowledge!

    Whilst intuition is our innate teacher, Nature is unquestionably our greatest external teacher.

      Intuition: Possibly a gateway to connecting to a greater universal wisdom to gain knowledge, understanding and wisdom that one did not consciously have beforehand. (Seems to work better when one is an honest, sincere truth seeker and one's brain gets 'wired' for truth).
      Nature: Nature is our greatest ally in so far as Nature gives us life and a place to live it, AND Nature is also our greatest enemy that is going to take it all away. (OSICA)

    I guess I have a good forest. I've been here for almost 7 years and on what was a 5 acre meadow surrounded by mature mixed woods I have planted most of the things you mentioned, plus. Every year I add more. At 67 some of it is for those who will follow, like pecans, sustainability and longevity is the goal.

    I appreciate you health kick, and your dramatic weight loss, but surely carrying some extra weight is wise when things get rough? While no one wants cancer, weight is one of the big survival factors. Low weight/low muscle/fat, equals a faster death, or a much more difficult recovery.

    Just make sure your fruit trees (apple, pear, etc.) don't have any Juniperus Virgininia (Eastern Red Cedar) trees around b/c they harbor Apple Cedar Rust which *will* affect all fruit trees. My research from state agricultural sites stated that if those trees were around, they needed to be cut down in a *five-mile* radius of where your trees were planted. This forced me to cut downall my apple, pear & plum trees b/c Cedar Apple rust got to all of them😿.

    To help with Mozzy's use of BTI, The BTI comes in floating chunks, including bait. BTI is a natural bacteria that causes bugs to have tummy problems and makes them food for birds and fish. BTI has ZERO effect on other insects and no effect on mammals. Use good bait like standing water and natural water-holding spots. For topical use, we use coconut shells. The Mosquitoes take the bait and lay egg rafts that are good food for birds. The BTI seeds the local biome in many areas and stays around for years. Past applications only took one application that lasted for years. Sorry, you are suffering.

    Consider the following: While we did not come from a Garden of Eden, I have come to believe that it is wise to plant Gardens of Edens wherever and whenever we can so as to provide food for insects, birds, critters small to large, including for humans, and for aquatic species where able to. This can also help species survive through many future mass extinction events (on Earth and elsewhere).

    • @Brett.D

      Consider the following: we came from the Garden of Eden

    • @charlesbrightman4237
      @charlesbrightman4237 3 місяці тому +1

      @@Brett.D I did consider it, even studied it. Here is a thing though: God does not actually exist except for as a concept alone. Also, modern science claims energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it's one of the foundations of physics. Hence, energy is a finite amount and eternally existent, or modern science is wrong. And then plus: One cannot get an absolute somethingness from absolute nothingness, hence an absolute somethingness always existed throughout all of eternity past, that absolute somethingness most probably being eternally existent energy itself.
      The universe always existed in some form and will most probably exist in some form. Side note also, the singular big bang theory is a fairy tale for various reasons. BUT, galaxies collapse in upon themselves, 'bang' generating a huge nebula cloud, whereby a new galaxy eventually forms, with new life that comes about in it, of which that galaxy eventually collapses in upon itself, in a never ending cycle.
      Some people for some reason believe in and accept future eternity with no end but yet seem to refuse to believe in and accept eternity past with no beginning. I have my own beliefs as to why, but it is still there none the less.
