If you're set on a washable and more durable weighted blanket, you can use glass beads as a slightly more eco friendly alternative to plastic beads. Bit more pricey but worth it for a blanket that can survive years!
You can use salt instead of rice too. Can't wash it either, but you won't have weird smells or bugs issues later. A big bag of salt for water softeners is cheap.
Actually, the best, and most eco-friendly, and most effective weighted blanket is just your favorite blanket, but with dogs on top of it. My big dogs will curl up on my legs and it makes me SO happy.
When my daughter was born, I had to stay in the hospital for a week and her for 2 months, my fiance stayed at a Ronald McDonald House. If it weren't for that place he would have had to drive over two hours each way to come see us and then her while she was still there. And then again when she was hospitalized a few months ago. That place was a life saver for us.

Now that I can make it thanks to this video I feel soooo happy and feel like some stress was lifted off of my shoulders ☺️ thank you ladies for this video I truly do appreciate it!!!!😉😘
I love the weighted blanket but I would suggest you to not use rice, every time some of my friend gifted me some diy with rice (like stuffed plushies for example) in few years (at most 2) the rice goes bad and little bugs start to grow
Corrie Chan thank you for volunteering! The Ronald McDonald House is very near and dear to my heart. When I was in the hospital, my family stayed there in and off for about a month, it was truly a blessing
If anyone wants a washable version of the blanket but doesn't want to use plastic, they do make glass beads. My mom actually bought me a weighted that used glass beads but you can buy just the beads themselves for a diy option
@@ahumanaperson I personally have a cover on mine, I find it's easier for cleaning anyway, you could sew ties onto their pattern and buy a cover for it. The beads shouldn't shatter in general though because of how small they are
I think if they’re itty bitty it might work. I can’t use rice; my body doesn’t clear mold properly, so if the rice got damp it would be a huge problem. Thanks for the alternative!
I've been trying to get motivated to make a weighted blanket. I like the idea of the glass beads. Where would be the best place to buy in bulk? I imagine Michael's and the like might be fairly expensive.
I want one for my sleep problems and chronic pain. I wake up 35-40 times a night because when I move, I hurt a lot and it wakes me. So if I move less, I’ll wake less. I hope you get your hands on one of these!
So excited to see the weighted blanket! I have an autistic son who benefits from weighted blankets and thus far I have only been able to afford a small version he can drape over his shoulders. I have wanted to get him a full size blanket to help with his irregular sleep but just couldn’t afford it. Thank you!
When I was 15 I went across the country for a camp and had gotten incredibly ill. I found out I had a brain tumor and needed an emergency operation because of the placement and size of the tumor. My parents flew having nothing arranged because they needed to get to me as fast as possible so I could go into surgery. The Ronald McDonald House helped my family in such a time of need and it's something I'll always remember. Thank you for spreading awareness!
Jaedyn Call Oh wow, that’s horrible! But wonderful that the charity was able to help. I mean, that’s so awful and hectic and scary, the last thing they should have to worry about is having to find lodging. I hope the surgery went well and recovery didn’t keep you down for long. When I was 11 I had a bad fall, hurt my spine, by 12 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, and by 15 I was homebound and a teacher had to visit me twice a week to “teach” me my subjects (she had taken French, I was taking Spanish, I had to correct her pronunciation when she’d test me, she was no help at math or science). Being sick when you’re a teen freaks your peers out and can kind of mess with questions of identity that happen naturally at that point. It’s really hard. So I’m really sorry that happened to you, especially then. I hope you’re doing well now.
In Germany, the standard filling for stuffies is cherry pits. I've had a pillow like that for over 10 years now. I'll wash the cover every few weeks and the insides haven't gone moldy yet. :) Also, a good woolen blanket will have the same effect on you! They're pretty expensive, but will last you 80 years+ (my grandma's). Wool is actually self cleaning to a degree and can be washed on a very gentle setting. Of course, it's a bit scratchy so you might want a cover or just a sheet inbetween. :) that's how my grandmother still sleeps every night, like in the old days. She has a linen or cotton sheet that touches her and then depending on the temperature wollen blankets on top.
Thanks so much for this great idea! I've been wanting to make a weighted blanket for my fibromyalgia and anxiety but I couldn't bring myself to buy so much (expensive) plastic. Rice isn't long lasting and glass is even more expensive than the cherry pits! I just found a site where I could buy 10 kg of cherry pits for €37 or so...perfect idea, danke schön!
@@masha7377 really? I should look at that, tho I don't know what health food shops are in the nearest city to us. (we live in a very small town, almost a village) Maybe they have them at the apotheke?

Great video! I work with people with disabilities. A young man with autism needs a 55lbs weight blanket. It‘s really extremely heavy but it’s helps him to calm down or to sleep.
I love this! But, about the weighted blanket; that's a lot of work and honestly using rice or other food items will probably mean you're gonna have to get rid of it in a couple of weeks. Honestly just go for the plastic pellets for longevity OR alternatives like micro glass beads. Preferably glass beads, they're great.
@Stephanie Charriere quartz aquarium gravel doesn't dust. And it's really heavy. Plus there are some alternatives that are actually little beads, so no poking.
I don't think stuffing it with rice is a long-lasting idea though. If there is too much heat in the room or if of stays there a long time it can be a place for insects to grow(sounds groce I know but it happens in cubbords and it's not nice to see it happen in your cozy new blanket!)

Ronald McDonald House is LITERALLY life changing! They’ve allowed my daughter to get weeks of intensive therapy & we’ve met families that have been there for months bc of babies born prematurely, kids who have been in accidents and families who only stay one night for an appt. We also saw our friends be able to stay with their son during his 2 years of Cancer treatments. They also provide meals & activities while your there & encourage socializing to help build community. It is such an amazing organization. As someone who’s child had used several different weighted blankets & lap pads I’d recommend doing poly beads or glass beads if you want to avoid the plastic instead of rice. It’s easier to wash & lasts significantly better & longer.
Normally I love absolutely everything you guys do but this weighted blanket is wrong to me. Rice is a great inexpensive alternative and normally I am all about not using plastic but not in the case of a blanket. Even your duvet insert should be washed every so often so putting a cover on it will help but eventually this thing will be garbage simply based on the fact that it's rice which will absorb sweat when you sleep if you spill something on it, etc and mould isn't fun. weighted polypropylene pellets are easy to wash and will extend the longevity of the blanket extremely far. You might be able to find other Alternatives maybe Ceramics but even then it'll absorb moisture so I would think that would not be a great choice. I've been wanting to make myself a weighted blanket for some time now for my fibromyalgia and poly pellets seems to be the best option out there. Plastics are bad for the environment but it's more so the disposal of plastics that are the problems rather than the existence of them. Plastics inside a blanket that will last for years to meet aren't that much of a problem if my weighted blanket dies on me the fabric you know gives out I can still reuse the plastic pellets and not going to be going to a landfill.
But Polypropylene doesn't breathe. Trust me, I suffer from Lupus and therefore sweat at night. You'll wake up slightly moist because the blanket doesn't allow air to circle under between. A rice blanket would last for a while if you only used it as a plaid on the sofa for quick calming and therefore would only be washed once in a while. The best thing to make a blanket out of are wool, silk and bamboo (which I have) they are biodegradable and resourceful to make and of course vegan
@@paigeoswald4324 you live what, 100 years? Guess what, plastic will exist FOREVER. Also, what is plastic made of? Oil. Like, Saudi-Arabia, Alaska... oil. Not an infinite resource. And to get it, eco-systems are destroyed. Plastic is (so far) irreplacable in so many areas (especially medical care and hygiene) but not here!
Maybe cherry stones could be an alternative to the rice in the weighted blanket (and the plushie). I see a few people recommending glass. However, I have a cherry stone pillow and I couldn’t live without it 🍒❤️
I really want a weighted blanket to help with my severe anxiety and depression and to help me not move to much when I sleep but I also have a dog who kinda does that (he is a service dog and is trained to do that). I also have my kitten to help sooth me and just watching my beta fish helps sooth me. For me taking care of animals and plants are what really helps calm me down. Also just watching movies and listening to Celtic music soothes me.
About using rice...my mother made me a "magic bag" using rice. I use it all the time and it's still great after 15 years! No smell, no mould, no bugs, just soothing heat when needed.
So my brother breed barn owls, and I helped raise the owlets. They have a natural instinct to head to anything white and fluffy, so I made little rice bags with white soft fabric so I could warm them up and keep the babies warm.
Ahh Ronald McDonald House was my parents home for a month when I was seventeen and needed brain surgery. They were amazing and helpful and so so kind to my parents and I can’t emphasize enough just how much I appreciated it
A lil tip for the stuffie; if you use rice for filling and want to heat it up you might want to put a cup of water with it while warming it up in te microwave. This’ll help prevent potential burning and/or weird smells a bit. :)
I do a lot of volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house near me and it’s an amazing effort that helps families stay close to their children when they need support the most! Great choice 💖💖💖 also I love the DIYs!
Thank you so much for doing this video! i left a comment a year or so back on your channel requesting something like this, but i assumed it would be lost in all the comments or you'd be unable/unwilling to do it at just one person's request, but the fact that you actually DID make it means so so much to me! I'll definitely be using these diys to help with my SPD (sensory processing disorder) :D
I came across your video...very cute ideas...and came here to suggest glass beads and found alot of people confused by the concept. Alot of discussion about the glass breaking or making alot of noise. Allow me to clear things up for those that have concerns. The glass beads are micro beads...just as fine if not more fine than sand. They don't break die to their size and the sound is like a whisper of sand flowing. Because glass is made from sand its very eco friendly and because it is glass and not porous the beads retain NO moisture there for no chance of mold...making any item easily washable. Have a blessed day.🙏 Ps...I've slept with a weighted blanket for over 8 years now and will never go back.😁

My friend has one but I don't want to steal it from her because she has anxiety as well. I haven't been able to find one without ordering it online which I don't want to do. Thank you for making this diy, hopefully I'll be able to make it
Love the Ronald McDonald houses! They're so great for families that can't afford hotels. My sons father helped build one in Raleigh, NC. He helped put all the plumbing into one. absolutely loved it!

Maybe for the next attempt of the weighted blanket, you could use a separate fabric to sew a long strip of pouches full of rice. Then you could put buttons in the open side of the blanket and slide the lengthof pouches in and out of each section! Easy removal for washing!
I would recommend putting a piece of plastic food wrap (aka saran wrap) over the lil zen garden and close it shut! Just to make sure no sand creeps out into a purse or whatnot.
I have always wondered why even in the summer when it is really hot I CANNOT sleep unless I have a HUGE blanket on top of me. You guys explained it to me and now I know that I still have anxiety in the night. Isn't that just fun?

Good idea, that means, you could also heat it, it will keep the warmth for a long time!
Yes, and it’s actually washable 💦
I’ve never heard of using cherry stones for anything, cool.
Cherry stones.. Like the seeds?
I was thinking about cherry stones, I love my homemade pillows, they a godsend for chronic pain!
rice can be spoiled i think dried cherry pit can be more useful
Why did you not use pebbles for the zen garden.? Just curious. Also I think a good idea might be to carry the zen garden in small pouch .
Please do a "hidden compartment" DIY
I really want a weighted blanket to help with my severe anxiety and depression and to help me not move to much when I sleep but I also have a dog who kinda does that (he is a service dog and is trained to do that). I also have my kitten to help sooth me and just watching my beta fish helps sooth me. For me taking care of animals and plants are what really helps calm me down. Also just watching movies and listening to Celtic music soothes me.
What about large grain sand for the blanket or small pebbles that way it can still be washed and it’s eco friendly
something i just learned when planning my blanket, rice goes bad and attracts bugs so it’s best deal then in baggies before putting into the blanket
These are great! I'd love to try and make these for my friend who has anxiety!
About using rice...my mother made me a "magic bag" using rice. I use it all the time and it's still great after 15 years! No smell, no mould, no bugs, just soothing heat when needed.
Barbie Zwicker can you wash it
Could you possibly combine the weighted blanket and aromatherapy? It would be amazing to have scent with the rice.
So my brother breed barn owls, and I helped raise the owlets. They have a natural instinct to head to anything white and fluffy, so I made little rice bags with white soft fabric so I could warm them up and keep the babies warm.
What a beautiful sponsorship. Anything to make these situations easier on families is wonderful ❤️
the weighted blankets are great for autistic children, the weighted hug it gives helps the child self-sooth
Ahh Ronald McDonald House was my parents home for a month when I was seventeen and needed brain surgery. They were amazing and helpful and so so kind to my parents and I can’t emphasize enough just how much I appreciated it
Wow this was lovely and that weighted blanket is beautiful
A lil tip for the stuffie; if you use rice for filling and want to heat it up you might want to put a cup of water with it while warming it up in te microwave. This’ll help prevent potential burning and/or weird smells a bit. :)
Such lovely diy ideas. I’ve never heard of weighted blanket and it sounds like its a very cozy thing to have.
Thank you so much for being mindful of reducing plastic
I do a lot of volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house near me and it’s an amazing effort that helps families stay close to their children when they need support the most! Great choice 💖💖💖 also I love the DIYs!
Sorry Girls: *release a video with tips on how to relax*
Canada: *immediately makes pot legal*
Instead of plastic you could use pea gravel. Very affordable and washable
Have a blessed day.🙏
Ps...I've slept with a weighted blanket for over 8 years now and will never go back.😁
I love the stuffy idea!! It would be great as a little gift for fussy toddlers who need a little buddy to sleep with!
I love how you guys are dressed for summer even though it’s super cold in Toronto rn.
Aw I'm an Alpha Delta Pi at the University of Memphis and The Ronald McDonald House Charities are ADPI's philanthropy. So sweet of y'all to do this for the kids/families that stay there. ♡
Replace rice w hydrated salts for heat/ cold options for the blanket !
I have a weighted blanket and its literally the best thing I've ever owned
Ngl that ‘mcDonAlds CANada ‘ @ 8:05 spooked me 😂
Milynna Ng 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love the weighted blanket. I need to make one.
Can we use lavender leaves rather than flowers?? also how long will it last?
Love this!! I need all 3. I think I can do 1 and 3, 2nd one... how much does the blanket go for?
omg you two ladies are AMAZING. I love both of the ideas and I will make these for gifts this year. Love your channel.
Small zen garden was my dream! 😊
I would love you to make a series on calming diys and self care diys
This is so creative!! I love the DIY ideas and how they are all for raising awareness and support of the amazing Ronald McDonald House
MAKE A RESIN GEODE TABLE 💕💕
haven't watched one of your vids for awhile and i'm so happy this is a calming/relaxing one! i really hope i can try out the mini zen garden, it looks so cool!
Love all these diys !!! Rice filled stuffie is very nice microwaved... I keep two in the freezer, if I need cold or heat for warm 👍❄️🔥
Love this! Been thinking about doing a weighted blanket for a while now. Think Im convinced now! Also those cookies look really good.
When I was in eating disorder treatment some of the girls had family stay in the Ronald McDonald house. The girls received gifts from the house too. It was really sweet
My sister was a childhood cancer survivor, and I can honestly say that the Ronald McDonald house is a life saver.
I've been wanting a weighted blanket ever since I learned they really help with anxiety, which I discovered I have a year ago. My friend has one but I don't want to steal it from her because she has anxiety as well. I haven't been able to find one without ordering it online which I don't want to do. Thank you for making this diy, hopefully I'll be able to make it
I luv the “stuffy”! What a fun gift idea! This would also make a nice boo-boo pack if kept in freezer.
this video is incredibly good for people with autism and I will be recommending these DIY's to all my mental health patients
Such a great cause & diys! I got two heart cookies last week!
Could you put the blanket in the dryer to get the same warm animal stuffy feel?
I neeeeeed that weighted blanket.
That stuffy is also perfect for cramps!
Hey sorry girls!! Can you give some storage solutions and tricks for dorm rooms?
What a great... and sweet... idea!
The Ronald McDonald house was wonderful when my son was in the NICU. So grateful that they exist.
just finished watching this and then saw you guys did a loft tour with refinery29! congrats, ladies!!!
I’m not any good at diys but could you use marbles for the weighted blanket or would that not work
such a relaxing videooo! wanna make the mini zen garden
Love the Ronald McDonald houses! They're so great for families that can't afford hotels. My sons father helped build one in Raleigh, NC. He helped put all the plumbing into one. absolutely loved it!
wow! Very cool!
TheSorryGirls thanks! We both love working with things like that. It gives me so much joy. I live a few miles from Ft Bragg and work with the homeless vets 2x a month. I was so unhappy for years and realized just getting out and doing things like that brought me so much fulfillment! 💜
Great video! Creative and super cute🤗
The DIY I didn’t know I need but I’m thankful I have! 💕💕
This is an amazing video! I love your support to local charities in Canada! ❤️😊
I have always wondered why even in the summer when it is really hot I CANNOT sleep unless I have a HUGE blanket on top of me. You guys explained it to me and now I know that I still have anxiety in the night. Isn't that just fun?
I so love these diys and your teaming up with the Ronald McDonald house!
