Japanese Metal is growing big time. They are all so proficient with playing their instruments.

Hey Shane! This is Alex ( the one that requested this) ...so Miss Althea is correct! One thing to point out is that Hizaki (the guitarist on the right) is heavily influenced by Hide...X Japan was his biggest influence...but him and Teru are definitely amazing guitarists in their own right...the speed that they can play at and the arrangements they can do are insane...These two guitarists are also part of the Japanese group, Jupiter. Kamijo is the vocalist of Versailles- some may think he is immortal because he never ages. But he is heavily into Vampiric lore and Goth/Baroque....speaking of which , It's no secret that some of the arrangements and videos give some major Castlevania vibes ( Kamijo the vocalist- practically looks like a living version of the vampire Alucard). He can also change his voice to suit the music...he was known for having a higher voice earlier in his career with a slight falsetto and then changed to lower it...and it's not very common in the music world to almost have a baritone sounding singer in neoclassical metal. He fronted the band Lareine and then Versailles...and he also has his solo group which is his namesake: Kamijo. He can also speak French, Japanese, and English ( although a little hard to understand). The original bassist, like Miss Althea said is an eternal member since he passed away mysteriously ( just like Hide from X Japan). Versailles has come to the USA before but I missed it! But from what I've seen of them live through videos they are amazing just as I thought they would be! I do have all their albums though as well as Kamijo's solo albums...all amazing! Anyways Shane thank you so much again for doing this for me! ( You also did Arch Enemy's Handshake with Hell for me awhile back). Oh yeah and it's true it is pronounced VER-SIGH ( like the town in France) haha...ohh also Versailles has been around for about 16 years but the members have been in bands years and years before this. They have toured and played with some really random bands: Bella Morte, Miss May I, Black Veil Brides etc....they were also at Hide's memorial summit show and invited on stage by X Japan

This is all fantastic information! Just from this one video, I could totally sense the influence from hide, whom I simply ADORE.....actually wondering now had hide lived (OR if Versailles started before hide passed), if he and Hizaki would have ended up doing some highly suggestive, questionable photo shoot together for Shoxx or Fool's Mate magazine. (I don't even want to think about a Seth et Holth Part 2....OMG.....)😸 I have tried watching footage from past Memorial Summits but always end up bawling and can't get through any of it, especially when Yoshiki speaks....I think this year's (2023) is slated to be pretty huge since it will be 25 years since hide's passing. Still so unbelievable.
By the way, you wouldn't happen to know if any video footage exists of one Dahlia tour show in Osaka on either 2/23/96 or 2/24/96 where hide performed in the green hair wig that he wore in the Genkei Haretsu video and a zebra print jacket??? Apparently this was the one and only time he appeared on stage in one or the other, let alone both...I have seen exactly 3 photographs but I am desperate for some video evidence! I have left pleas in the comments of literally hundreds X Japan or hide solo videos but what little information I have received is slim to none. (Or maybe folks feel like they can't or are afraid to respond because they are not fluent - or fluent enough - in English.... Trust me, I know how to use Google Translate!)
And lastly, the great state of Indiana also has a town of Versailles...it is not far from where I grew up but in those parts it is pronounced VER-SALES.

@@MissAlthea shoot I had a reply earlier but I think it might not have gone through correctly. I haven't seen any footage with Hide with green hair but if I run into it I'll definitely let you know! Also Hizaki would have been 19 when Hide died but who knows if they ever met. If anyone it might have been Kamijo the vocalist since his first band Lareine started in 94 and he is also good friends with Yoshiki. Also Teru the other guitarist idolizes Hide...if you Google Teru and Hide cosplay you'll see him dressed up as him and the resemblance is uncanny! Also if you want some serious Silent Jealousy vibes check out the video The Revenant Choir by Versailles ( it's one of their earliest videos and Kamijo tries to sing in English and it is in his "other" voice) but you'll see by the instrumentation it is a lot like silent jealousy. If you watch it let me know what you think! It's very Vampire-ish though!

@@ratt8745 I looked up the cosplay photos of Teru and holy {bleep}ing crap....I am FLOORED!!! Hell, Yoshiki did not have to drop serious coin on that slick hologram technology (for the short time X Japan was using it) - he could have just had Teru come on stage like that and thrown everyone into a tizzy! Also, Ruki of The GazettE - another band I only know OF but otherwise have no familiarity with - did a few photo shoots that were not cosplay proper but rather "fashion inspiration" nods to hide....they were pretty slick, I have to say. You have probably heard the long-standing rumors that Ruki is hide's son, but they are all totally unfounded. I have never believed it - besides which, it literally does not add up in terms of his birth year, etc.
Re: Revenant Choir....I realized after watching that I had actually seen that video, at least in part, many years ago but I did not not put the pieces together as far as the band when I watched this video (Ascendead Master). I remembered the daughter of a co-worker watching it on a laptop computer one day she was in the office (for whatever reason)....I did not hear the music as she had headphones on but it was definitely that video! After hearing the song now, though....definitely Silent Jealousy 2.0!!! The English on the vocal wasn't THAT bad....geezy pee, it wasn't like hide on Frozen Bug or LEMONed I Scream! I love him dearly but OH MY....he tried.😸 Thank goodness he worked with a vocal/diction coach for the Zilch stuff....

Always happy to see someone enjoy Versailles! Some interesting things about the context of the video - the single was released in 3 versions, each one came with one third of a short film (the MV is the conclusion/epilogue of this film). From what I was able to gather (and my interpretation might be wrong), the plot is that a group of vampires own a Life Insurance Company... sell the policies, turn you immortal and BAM - now the clients pay forever! The woman is a nurse in the hospital who discovers the scam and at the end is silences (or forced to 'buy' a policy as well?)
I did get to see them live during their 10th Anniversary World Tour in 2017, and as great as the studio recording is they are also fantastic performers. Stage presence, costumes, musicianship, and the fans in the audience were super friendly and enthusiastic (a number in historical cosplay as well!)
A lot of their music is story driven - the more you listen to the discography the more you will notice themes and musical motifs that recur (some represent different characters in the stories - Flowery(Fleur), Thanatos, etc.) and the lyrics often reflect this as well. Ascendead Master was their most commercially successful single, but lyric wise it's not as in depth, the vampire theme more blatant in the words instead of just being heavily implied or used as a metaphor.

I adore Versailles. I met them with the album Noble and I immediately became a fan. Kamijo, their vocalist has an incredible feeling when it comes to singing and it's true, he doesn't seem to age XD

I have been a huge fan for many many years. They have other projects and solo careers but they never stopped being a band and have just made a comeback together with "vogue" their new single. They are amazing! I absolutely love their music and style, their theatrical mannerisms they are all amazing. Actually I also love Kamijo's previous band called Lareine, it's a kind of different but similar vibe, more nostalgia than epic vibe. But also excellent.

I believe the band name is pronounced VER-SIGH (like the town in France). Other than that (and I am not even sure if that is correct), I am of NO HELP to you at all with this band! My scope of Japanese rock is very narrow: X Japan, Loudness, EZO, and maybe a little bit of Dead End. I honestly only know of Versailles for 2 reasons: 1) photos always turn up as "related content" on Pinterest because I have downloaded and saved so many images of X Japan (well, hide specifically) from there; and 2) their bass player passed away but he (yes, HE) is considered an "eternal member" of the band - like with hide and X Japan. As far as I know, all the members are guys....so yeah, some heavy duty androgyny going on. This was my first exposure to any of their material - and this was definitely influenced by X...it's like Silent Jealousy on steroids! LOVEBITES is the band name that was escaping you. And by the way, I don't know anything about Dir En Grey, either, except for the lead singer was friends with hide, and a former friend of mine somehow ended up being a drum tech for them.
