    Despite never being built, outside of one reported wooden mockup of the rear turreted variant, the Lowe was the first in a line of designs which led to the German super heavy tanks like the E-100 and Maus. Join me today as I do my best to break down the complex development of this design as it progressed.

      I insist to this day that the German WW2 Superheavy Tanks and even the Heavy Tanks were all designed while the designers were smoking weed or on some other drug.
      German Tank Designer 1: "So, like, what if we made the armor *really* thick, but also almost enteiry vertical?"
      German Tank Designer 2: "And, like, what if we added a big gun? Chicks love big guns, right?"
      German Tank Designer 3: "OOoohhh, and make it so inefficient with fuel that it needs to be resupplied every tens miles or so."
      German Tank Designer 4: "Is this weed bad? I mean, I can't feel it."
      German Tank Designer 5: "Pass it here. Also, we need more munchies."

      @David Hollenshead that's not what happens though, the man with the silly tiny mustache ordered projects like that abandoned and they were continued against his orders, in some cases because of the instructions of military officers, in other cases because of the engineers wanting to complete their work. Maus, for example, had been ordered cancelled by the man with the tiny mustache, work continued because Porsche was unwilling to give up on the project. the man with the tiny mustache was evil, but he was not a madman, despite what his generals who were trying to avoid being held accountable for their own decisions wrote in their memoirs years after the war. You can't expect to effectively combat evil if you can't even understand it and simply dismiss it as the ravings of a madman. The man with the tiny mustache was not a madman, he was rational, but he was wrong because he built his beliefs on an unsound foundation. If you accept the foundation of what he believed (such as socialism being good, capitalism being bad, and racial supremacy) then pretty much everything he did makes perfect sense. Even many of the decisions made during the war that are often used as examples of how he was insane are mostly not legitimate, a good example would be Operation Barbarossa. People claimed he was a madman because he thought he would win the war by capturing Moscow: that's not remotely what happened. He wanted to focus German efforts on army group South to take the oil from the caucuses oh, it was the head of the okh who disobeyed his orders and deployed forces in such a way so as to focus on army group North. You clearly don't have even a basic understanding of this history, good luck not repeating it.

      The Löwe was put into two designs. Lichter Löwe, (VK 70.01 Krupp), and the (VK 72.01) (105-128mm) (VK 72.02-150mm), The two Schwerer Löwen. These two designs, are very interesting, thinking to me about how most likely the Lichter Löwe would’ve been a part of history, given if Hitler wasn’t in favor of a heavier tank, quite constantly. Keep in mind the Tiger II wouldn’t exist if he didn’t make that one fatal decision. We could’ve had Löwen in museums, books, just more so as the Entwicklung (Development) series. A relatively stupid dictator cancelled the 3rd Reichs tank development. Yet, still gave us the marvels such as the Maus and the Entwicklung 100 (E-100) chassis. But how much more we could’ve had... let it linger in your head. Is this reliable? I’ve so far dedicated my life to research on military vehicles, I provide with what I know I can.

      Average Sherman transmisson/engine life time was 2500-3000 km.

      @davidhollenshead4892 2 роки тому +12

      ABOUT TRANSMISSIONS...
      As a skilled Auto Mechanic, I can best explain by analogy:
      It's easy to make a manual transmission for small cars to mid-sized cars. It's harder to make a manual for mid-sized to large cars or cars with powerful engines...
      Making a manual transmission for large commercial trucks involves a design change, to forgoing synchromesh, so that rev-matching is necessary, that is by revving the engine to a specific rpm before shifting up and a different rpm for downshifting without using the clutch pedal...
      Making a large piece of farm or construction equipment involves replacing the clutch with a torque converter so that take-off from a stop doesn't rip the teeth off the heavy-duty gears...
      What the Germans & others tried to build was manual transmissions with a clutch for heavy tanks that even the most skilled operator couldn't avoid damaging. And in the case of Nazi Germany, I am so very glad they did because it was one of the many bad designs they pursued that helped them lose the war !!!
      AS THE ONLY GOOD NAZI IS A DEAD NAZI !!!

Not many tanks in the war were super reliable anyways, its a common misconception that the the Sherman tank was a very reliable vehicle. obviously compared to German vehicles it was but. Love this design. So conventional in everything but its size. World of Tanks brought it to life; I was astonished. Krupp had a good idea, but Shitler wanted 'bigger'.
    The original engine was to be the DB602, the same engine as those on the Hindenburg airship, with 1,100hp. And look at the turret: it's cast in one piece, like a bell. No German tank had a cast turret.
    And the 105mm gun would've packed a hellish punch, capable of killing most Allied tanks out to 2,000 meters.
    And your video is fine, considering the chaos you had to endure. Good work.

    • @kristoffermangila
      @kristoffermangila Місяць тому

      Actually, the original engine for the Löwe is the marine diesel version of the DB602, the MB501. It was eventually replaced by the 1000 hp Maybach design. I personally think the Kriegsmarine raised objections about using the MB501 in the Löwe, as they also use the engines in their Schnellbooten (A Schnellboot needs 3 MB501s to run).

    As much as people say that Germany was crazy for designing and wanting to build these Super Heavy vehicles, I personally think that for Germany it makes at least a bit of sense, as in WW2 they didn't have the industrial capacity of the USSR or the USA, so making smaller, more standardized tanks like the Sherman and T-34 doesn't make as much sense, as making one Sherman would take as long as a Panther, even though it was a less capable vehicle. Obviously designs larger than the Tiger 2/Löwe were completly stupid a the ammount of material was too much, for what they would have been capable of. Off course as we saw from the 3 heaviest German designs that entered serviece (Tiger 2, Jagdtiger, Feridinand/Elephant), Germany had a problem with designin powerfull enough engines and transmissions.

    Someone in this chain of Brainstorm thought about logistics? TigerI and TigerII needed for the removal of the outer Wheel-rims and for transportchains to fit on the flat railway car and through the tunnels of a railway. Maximum weight on bridges was also an issue. They were trying to build a supertank what in result could only defend the gate of its factory.
