    A Zippo hand warmer is good in your shirt pocket, can last maybe 8 hours, the bag its in helps control how hot you want it.

    THANK YOU, finally someone used the poncho as intended, as instant shelter and with stealth and rapid deployment. YOU get a six star rating on a one to five star rating with me. THE candle power put you over the top.

      Multipurpose for sure. Ponchos can be more effective than people would suppose. I find I use them here in our area more for great wind protection than for rain.

    I really like the simplicity of this approach. My wife got lost the other day in the wilderness on a hike. Luckily she made it out before dark, but I think this kind of setup would have been ideal had she needed to spend the night... she didn't have the time or the skills to make a fire or to build an elaborate shelter. She was tired and wet and panicky. Had she had and used a poncho she could have been dry, and with little effort have gotten a good nights rest or at least avoided hypothermia!

    That really works to keep you warm, it was always my luck the guys looking for us always used FLIR, we couldn't ever do this. Put the candle holder in a steel canteen cup you still get the heat but you won't get burnt from touching the holder.

    They use to do that in vietnam, they said they were able to dry off there cloth or part of with a single candle. i always wanted to try it out. with the full size UCO lantern an a beeswax candle you could last for the whole night (9 hours). it might even get to warm. thanks for sharing.

    I revisited this video after being reminded of watching it while reading "The Frontiersmen" by Allan Eckert. He relates that they would sometimes dig a hole and burn the bark of white oak trees in the hole because it would burn with minimal smoke, thus avoiding detection. They would also drape themselves in a blanket and sit spraddled over the hole for heat from the coals. As you know, white oak is common in the Eastern USA. I suspect that you know the best low smoke medium to burn in your area. Of course the UCO lantern with beeswax candle is much safer and no smoke at all.

      That is a great idea! I live up in the north east and I can imagine scenarios where that would work really well...so you know 3+ years later your comment is here hitting it's mark and helping someone😎👍
      Also as far as the video,I've been eyeing those mini uco candle lanterns for a stealth camp heat option.

    The crazy creek hex 2.0 powerlounger can act as the tree in order to be able to have a very nice back rest wherever you go.
    A flipstick cane, the walkstool comfort and the helinox chairs with the high backs are also really nice to have.

      As part of my edc I carry the flipstick cane and the ul poncho and amazingly they both fit in the propper usmc assault pouch. And to make the flipstick cane be more comfortable to sit on I cut to size and glued a very comfortable kneeling pad to the seat.

    this is a very cool idea but for heat I use a metal water bottle and heat it up to where I can barely hang onto it and stick it in my sleeping bag or in this case between your legs and this way your water won't freeze you stay warm and you've got water for coffee

    Great video! I saw your earlier video using a candle lantern and adapted my survival system based on some of the strategies you used. I made a mylar poncho to fit under my PSSL and over my winter coat. I wanted a system that would get me through the night in an emergency situation that was not fire dependent. If I can start a fire then I would use the poncho for a tarp and clip the mylar poncho to the inside with my mini clips. I am pretty sure that I could get a fire going but there is always the chance that it may not happen and with this system I am sure I will make it through the night. I may not be toasty but I will live to tell about the experience! LOL I purchased the candle lantern to go along with the system and now I feel I have a pretty good survival shelter system, especially for the cold months! As always, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences!

    I like using a hand warmer that uses a 6 " charcoal fuel rod whitch you can ligbt one end both ends or brake it in pieces and light up several ends ...they get hot with one end quite hot with two ends and really really hot if you light three or four pieces and they dont last as long and they come with a fleece pouch so you dont burn yourself you could place it on a wool mitt or a sock to maintain and hold the heat.......
    If you google handwarmers you will find differant types again i like the charcoal fuel rod .....myself because of the diversity of lighting one end or more theyre cheap and dependable and safe

      Gym Bagg yeah those work well as do the ones with fluid fuel. I made this video mostly in response to many who have in the past in the military or otherwise used just an open candle. This using an enclosed candle is much easier and safer. I like the beeswax candles as they don’t have the odor that others do so I’m not breathing that. Now in reality I would not likely ever use any of these items except in emergency. Thanks for the comment.

I'll try this on the next clear night, although in SE England there is no real wilderness left and "survival" is more about trying to dodge the traffic! Thank you for a simple and enlightening idea. Now then.. safe, lightweight, smokeless, dual-purpose (edible?) fuels?

    Panchos are a great all season piece of kit. It is the top item in my pack, right on top of my tarp, and next to the kettle.
    Much the same can be accomplished using a wool blanket while sitting on your pack. I believe it was demonstrated on the Native Survival channel a few years ago.

    I have used the poncho thing in the field also, but usually with those heat tab things. They vent right into your face and probably bad to inhale, but it did make things a bit warmer in wet cold conditions.

      +Chris Collier What I like about the UCO Micro lantern with beeswax candles is they are practically soot free, and they smell nice, no petrochemical odors. That said I don't really breathe much of the candle as I try to seal around my neck the best I can to hold the heat in. You are right that little bit of heat inside can really make things more cozy.

    Great video. Another term for this technique is "Palmer furnace." It works with uninsulated ponchos, but of course an insulated poncho will work better. If you don't have a candle lantern and need to do this to get warm you can scoop out a small hole in the ground between your legs and place the candle in the hole to prevent it from getting knocked over.

    Your web site for ordering is confusing. I would like a poncho with a cold weather liner but you cannot tell if the poncho and the liner are two separate items or come as a set?

    • @wildernessinnovation
      @wildernessinnovation  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for asking. Yes the poncho and the liner are separate items, they can snap together to form a full length coat. There are two kinds of ponchos, the standard poncho and the HD version which I used in this video, they both do all the same things, but the HD is extra tough. On the webpage the first item on the page is the standard poncho, then below that is the HD, then scroll down a couple items and you'll see the PSS Liner. Hope that helps. We are working on changing up the website, but it will take a bit to do it, it's a big project. Thanks again.

    if the heated poncho is so warm why do u need another heat source. Don't ur face get cold? is there no way to cover your face?

    • @wildernessinnovation
      @wildernessinnovation  6 років тому +1

      The poncho is not heated, but is insulated when a liner is worn inside it, so a persons body heat can be retained. When a person is moving around doing things there is plenty of heat to keep warm, but when at rest or sleeping the body is not generating much heat, so at times additional heat may be needed, that is the reason for the candle, it gives enough extra heat. Thanks for the comment.

      Kevin Butler So all of our ponchos have the same functions and the same basic layout. The thing to do is choose based on the most common use you will have for it. I wouldn’t buy just for bug out because you’ll want to use it now as well. All our ponchos have three main modes of use, a poncho, a hammock, and a tarp.

      @@wildernessinnovation Thanks for the reply. The issue I'm having is picking which material the poncho is made of to go with. Rip stop nylon, a heavier canvas type material, etc. I'm not sure I'd trust my hefty carcass using the poncho for a hammock....ha, ha. While this is for my BOB I will also be using it for day hikes as well. I completely believe that one needs to be familiar with equipment before needing to use it.

      The Ripstop HD and the HD poncho series will work for pretty well anyone as a hammock, I often say, if you can walk you can use these as hammocks. The Hi Tech Ripstop HD has the advantage of not only being strong, but about 30% lighter than the Cordura HD ponchos.

    DO NOT try this with Tea Candles. The paraffin (I suppose) based wax melts such that the cup is full of liquid wax. I turned one over and knocked it off a table in one swift (meaning "not too bright" rather than "fast") move. The liquid wax ALL IGNITED IN THE AIR like a flame thrower, and was still burning when it hit the carpet. Only fast action with something right at hand to smother the fire kept it from destroying the carpet and possibly causing a larger fire. I was lucky, and I was surprised. I never thought it could be that volatile! I still carry small votive candles for impromptu heating, but the candle lantern he shows is a MUCH better solution.
