The even funnier thing about the rules of Duelist Kingdom is that some of those bizarre tactics are now official cards, and at least at release, weren't bad support cards either like Attack the Moon. I used to troll so hard with some of those types of cards. Fun times.
I just realized that the phrase "Pistols at dawn, and I won't need any back-up" could totally be replaced with "Cards at dawn, and I won't need a Side Deck" in a Yu-Gi-Oh dominated world.
Yeah Dark Side is canon to the manga which we know because Kaiba is present at the anime Ceremonial Battle and saw that Yugi was his rival indeed, but wasn’t there in the manga, and so thought Yugi wasn’t worthy really, but also a good point is that since Dark Side is canon to the manga timeline, we NEVER SEE Kaiba at any point after Transcend Game (Dark Side prequel) in the manga, so he potentially does not actually come back, and thus could be why the stories in the mangas after the og, because Kaiba is not at all present due to getting stuck, fading away and potentially dying forever. Quite unfortunate to be sure
Except for the art Kazuki Takahashi made depicting Kaiba and Yugi playing Yugi's new game in Earth's orbit. He said in the description of the art that it's one of the possible futures.
The Duel Monsters through 5Ds era was peak Yugioh for me as it’s what I grew up with, mostly skipped Zexal browsed bits of Arc-V and so far got through the first 20-ish episodes of Vrains which I’m enjoying. I’m glad to see that the franchise continues to grow in following.
I Was born in 98 so the original trio of DM GX and 5D's were my childhood remember playing with other kids in Elementary school i was the third best duelist there till i lost my deck just before high school... but they were good times while they lasted..
Darkside of Dimensions is canon to the original manga, where in Kaiba fell out of the story after Battle City so he and Yugi never settled their score whereas they did so in the anime continuity. So timelinewise, the anime timeline goes directly from Duel Monsters to GX whereas the manga timeline goes from OG Series to Darkside of Dimensions to GX. Additional fun fact, due to having different continuities, the manga story is VERY different from the anime. The manga went directly from Battle City to the final arc against Bakura whereas the anime had the Noah, Orichalchos and Zigfried arcs to consider. GX, 5ds and Arc-V also had entirely different stories from the anime continuities (and yet Zexal's was the same in both anime and manga). This was all confirmed by the creator himself who stated that DoD was a direct sequel to his manga and not the anime as he was the lead writer for it whereas he was never the lead writer for any of the anime.
My favorite card is Vampire Fraulein (always love those hand summons and she's probably the best defense if not interrupted) but my favorite version is the first one. That Egypt theme for the card game was PERFECTION and though the future series all have great stories in their own timelines, the Egyption gods are far too iconic (despite every deck now having a counter for them)
When I was growing up, I watched two episodes of YuGiOh total: Yugi vs Joey in Duelist Kingdom, and Yugi vs Weevil in Waking the Dragons. And yet, the sheer insanity of mystical Pharaoh using hologram monster cards to fight people stuck in my mind. It's just such a cool, insane concept. I eventually watched the original Duel Monsters anime because of it. I never really got into any of the other series, aside from YuGiOh Abridged which is amazing. But the original series lives rent-free in my mind for pretty much all of the reasons mentioned in this video. Side note, ever consider reacting to YuGiOh Abridged? For all I know you've seen it already, but I enjoyed your Code Ment reactions even though you'd seen those before, so hey.
Looking back on the old series was such a wild ride even with Season 0, like its absurdness and growing stakes is what really pulled me in to the series and eventually the game post Egyptian Gods. I actually tag team dueled my bully with my brother and he had all the god cards and was so coky about his skills that he put them up as ante, I put my blue eyes, my treasured card as an ante and my brother, his strongest card. Needless to say, me and my brother walked away with some god cards. Even now I still play yugioh time to time, photon-galaxy and Borrel Rokkets forever, god bless the kitchen gun. The battle between yugi and atem will forever be peak.
Honestly I feel like 4Kids actually added to the lore by making it instead of death (which honestly would've made death Dragonball levels of cheap) but adding the Shadow Realm. That and I will always hear Kaiba as his English dub voice, and the same for Pegasus.
@@requiem6465Oh yeah I remember downloading the GX theme in particular on ol Limewire. I still have the movie soundtrack. God I miss those sweet tunes.
My favourite card was 5 headed dragon, because it is such stupid card and virtually impossible to get out at the time but when you did same did it feel good. my favourite series was either duel city or duel kingdoms. I just remember the how kaiba made his initial fortune was by buying a company from a owner who truely cared about his employee's and forcing him to buy it back from him for ten times the amount just so his employee's wouldn't get fired as he was going to destroy the building
On the other side of that my favorite card was Dragon Master Knight which was also at the time equally hard to get out if not more so (it became a lot easier with The light hex-sealed fusion) But unlike 5HD it didn't get an upgrade which was quite disappointing. It would be really cool if you had a version of Master of Chaos fused with Neo Blue-eyes ultimate.
I love the story and the idea, that something like Nerf could REPLACE the military of every country and politics could effectively be reduced to. "I challenge you to a nerf battle." That's what the Yu-Gi-Oh verse devolves into, and it is so batshit insane. It's great.
With 5Ds basically rapid evolution through synchro summoning. Eventually lead to the power generator itself evolving and nuking the planet. With the bad guy being actually the good guy from the now Mad Max future. They discover a new means of energy aka XYZ summoning, and scrubbed the history books of all mentions of synchro summoning and tuners wiped from existence.
I tried to learn L5R as a kid and had absolutely no idea what was going on. I would like to try learning it as an adult, but I don't think that many people, if any, still play the original version of the game. I remember the factions, and I remember a few of the mechanics, but it's been more than 20 years since I tried playing last, so I have forgotten a lot of it. He didn't come up with the rules for Duelist Kingdom it's more like he borrowed, we'll say rules from a japanese only tcg called monster collection. But also from a Japanese adaption of D&D that wasn't called D&D. Basically, Duelist Kingdom was just D&D but with cards.
L5R is eternal for me and a few friends. There's so many cool interactions in the game and lore. There was some mechanic bloat, and unused mechanics like Bayushi Nitoshi having keyword "Sociopath" which did nothing, but it's one of my 2 favorite card games I've played. I'll have to look into Monster Collection, this seems like a fun thing to dive into. Especially if it was inspiration to Duelist Kingdom.
I'm a basic bitch, my favourite monster is Borrelsword Dragon. It's a futuristic sword dragon, swords are cool, dragons are cool, combine them and boom. It also didn't hurt that it was a completely nuts OTK machine at one point.
IMO yugiho is too complex now so I play Monarch and force my opponent to play like it’s the year 2000. I either brick or quote the abridged move “synchro what?!”
Modern yugioh absolutely has an issue with approachability and complexity. Monarchs are still one of my favorite decks, Monarchs Stormforth is still incredibly powerful
I mean my highlight of the last time I went to my local comic shop was beating a links play with my Sphinx deck. Making him destroy both sphinxes so I can summon Theinen the Great Sphinx with a helping of magic cylinder.
For me it was duel monster's and five d's I was there when that first episode dropped and i was HOOKED 5d's cards on wheels and that engish opening we the audience got to vote brought me back.
My personal headcanon for Yugioh is that Duel Monsters isn't as ubiquitous as it seems in the series, (outside of 5Ds where it literally powers the world I guess) it's just that the magic that birthed it in ancient Egypt persists and actively draws Duelists to each other. Also, no, Zexal is just the far future after 5Ds, not an alternate timeline.
I wish i could go back to being a kid and getting into my yu gi oh phase, i had tons of toys and cards i wish i still had them but after moving alot they got lost along the way sadly
Frankly I don't want there to be Esports courses for the simple issue that Esports ruins games for the rest of the playing market. Furthermore, there are not school courses for sports that fully supplant other career and education paths. I like that the effort and skill is being respected, but maybe we need to pull back and consider the perspective. Just because you're a professional baseball player at College level, doesn't mean you don't have to do other things at school. Sports is still not a major.
I think eSports being a field can take precedent over learning relevant things. Why would a kid want to learn about the relevance of the Epic of Gilgamesh in modernity, or the Triple Entente which led into WWI, or Trigonometry by choice when they see that they can just go to school for games. It's an extreme example, but I really just don't see it going positive places on a macro level.
Favorite series are the OG manga followed closely by the rest of the manga series in no particular order. Then 5ds, Arc V, GX, Zexal, and I have not watched Vrains.
For a brief time, I was interested in Duel Masters. You can thank some comics/manga at my library and the coolness of some of the fire deck machinery. Rothus the Traveler for example. Also a light lore book. I've also got a fair few Acceleracer TCG cards up in my box of old trading cards I kept for nostalgia and art. Edit: Bakugan was the one that probably hooked my the hardest. I followed it for a long while, but the power creep in the show just got too much. The more-er ancient-er super-er stuff just... too much man. Too much. After the the Gundalian emperor was defeated I dropped off.
Yu-Gi-Oh the manga is actually really awesome. It also gives us so much Kaiba character and makes him much stronger than he is in the anime alone. Also, a lot of the duels are better because they are shorter and not extended out, though the final duel definitely was improved by the anime by actually having the Egyptian Gods all show up and then Yugi beating them.
I want to posit the idea that Yugioh and Chainsaw man are in the same universe where he killed and devoured War. Now its just childrens card games the world over.
Making every video about the evils of capitalism while simultaneously being literally surrounded by the fruits of his consumerist obsessions is the entire reason I stopped following MB. The fact he hasn't gained any self awareness in the 2 years since then only reinforces that decision.
