The Century II and Townsend are very similar. The refill will be the same in both pens so the writing experience will be the same. Them main difference between the two would be the pen girth and cost.
You did not mention any fountain pens. My first “serious” fountain pen was a Cross Townsend Metalist. I have always loved Cross and they got me into fountain pens
You are right Edward. We almost decided to include the Cross Century II Fountain pen however because these are the top Cross Pens for Gifts, we felt like our list is a bit more approachable. Thanks for the comment!
I use Cross ballpoints regularly, but find that their fountains are a bit untrue to their specified flow as the “medium” is very “broad” IMHO. I use a Parker Jotter for my ‘everyday’ fountain and find that the flow and control is simply amazing, especially for the price! I do have a Cross Calais fountain (Blue, Medium) sitting next to me and though the flow is a bit ‘wet’ for a medium, they feel phenomenal when using them to write your signature on a document. As most documents are typed, it may be the only ink you need on the page with no other pen even being necessary. As far as writing notes, especially those yellow Post-it notes, the Parker Jotter all the way. The cool factor is that both of these quality fountain pens could be found relatively ‘cheap!’ ✌

It is ironic that it took so long to get a Parker Jotter since I lived most of my life near Janesville, the longtime home of Parker. @@edwardstaats4935 that’s funny and ironic, but it’s almost the opposite for me - I started using Parker in high school (or somewhere around that time) and Cross since my early teens as a Chrome Medalist Box Set was a gift, however I had no clue that Waterman even existed until I was a 30-something! Waterman is also in my top 2 or 3 or so when it comes to favs, maybe even #1! As far as the nib for my Cross above, sure, I was just not sure what my options are, e.g. going OEM or if there’s a better third party option. Let me know. I’d appreciate that! In the meantime it makes a great pen for signing documents considering the wet, broader strokes and smooth flow. BTW, paper really means everything when writing with a fountain pen or any water-based ink for that matter as a quality paper absorbs better and is thicker stock that is made to handle ’wetter’ inks. Oil-based inks that are used in ballpoints don’t have those problems, which is why the fountains ’seem’ picky! ✌

Yes! You are correct that the Cross Century II fountain pens do not automatically come with a converter. One must be purchased separately. The pens come with two Cross black ink cartridges. As for the metal button you referenced, I believe that you are referring to the decorative embellishment on the top of the cap of some of the Century IIs. All the Century II rollerballs do have that button looking decoration on the cap, but it is not always black. This embellishment is a design nod the the Classic Century and is black only on the Gold and the Chrome finish Century IIs. The Medalist and the Black Lacquer Gold Trim Century II has this same button in gold to match the appointments of the pen, and the Black Lacquer Chrome Trim and Blue Lacquer Century IIs have it in chrome.

I have a vintage pen and have no idea of how to open it. My dad got it as a gift from his work for years of service. He passed away years ago ,so I would hate to lose it in the mail. And I would hate to break it.
This sounds like a tough problem. It may be that it hasn't been opened/ twisted in quite some time and is seized up. Try to first determine if it is a capped pen or is a click/twist and then small amounts of pressure to see if you can get it to break free. Good luck!
I got the rollerball blue lacquer Century II. It's an evolution of the Century, so you still get something of its history plus the comfort of more modern pens, a good combination, and it was the Trump administration's pen, honoring Century's history.
We really enjoy the Century II line. You nailed the description. The slightly larger barrel makes it much more comfortable to write with for long periods of time.
No offense and not everyone goes for fountain pens, but for that special someone, would consider the Cross Peerless 125. AMAZING writer with a Sailor nib. Writes better than some pens 2-3x price
Avinoam, I found their pen quality to be amazing as I still have Cross pens from 30+ years ago that are working just fine today! They are also pretty sturdy and hold up well. I dropped and drove over one once, and aside from a couple of pits and scratches it still worked just fine (and I still have it even though this was maybe 10 years ago)! Their pencils on the other hand have ALWAYS given me trouble mechanically! The leads get stuck, break easily, and the whole pencil irreversibly jams! So, I only go with their pens for this reason. Honestly, a company like Cross probably has pretty high standards with their Chinese manufacturers and won’t tolerate their pens being made out of spec or of subpar quality. The Chinese are getting very lucrative contracts in exchange, so they wouldn’t want to lose the business. I’m confident the failure rate IS SLIGHTLY WORSE than those pens manufactured in the USA or EU, but likely not by as much as one would first think. So, I WOULD still purchase one, but determine future purchases from this quality. I’m still staying away from their pencils though, no matter where they make them! 😂
It is possible to find a USA made pen. They are like 4 times more expensive, but their quality is visibly better. The "only" difference is the USA stamp on their bodies that is missing on Chinese versions. That's from my personal experience.
A like for Century Classic. The whole collection is a piece of art. But! Don't waste money on Chinese manufactured pens, they are not worth it. USA made only. Said from personal experience.

A T Cross was bought out in 2022 and is no longer in business. There is NO warranty claim service as new owners just shut everything down.
We have an ongoing relationship with A.T. Cross. They are still producing pens!
