There definitely needs to be a 3 piece Duckbill that starts directly off the black bar/Subaru logo and has pieces that go above the tail lights. It would really help widen the wedgie trunk design and compliment the flares on the quarter panel. I've asked Aeroflow on YT and their QA insta posts but they never respond 😅
My friendly local dealership did the same dang thing to my VA wrx had to replace 3 wheel studs myself now that i know they don’t have time or care to torque wheels…
I always remove those goofy wheel locks with an impact so I can put lots of axial force into it as it turns and doesn’t slip out. I thought that was gonna be your problem, glad to see it wasn’t haha. Not that dramatic over torque is a lot better
You need a bigger breaker bar with more leverage. Or do the stealers way and find a impact socket that could go over it barely, hammer it and rip wheel lock lug nut. I had to do that to mine one time was not a fun night. Cool thing is i got aftermarket lug nuts. 😅
dont know about destroying the lug nut with this method but im pretty sure you can fit the wrench to the nut and itll have just enough to hold itself in place without falling... then just stomp on one end. obviously not good idea with an injured leg like in this video.
2017 wrx Owners manual states 89 ft lbs. Not even close to what torque I do. I had the same problem with America's Tire. They over torqued every lug nut. Then got a flat. Snapped every stud on 1 wheel trying to get them off. Rotating tires I snapped 4 out of 5 lug nuts on the other 3. Turns out 72-75 ft lbs is plenty tight. But I swapped to ARP studs and steel nuts because the factory hardware is garbage pot metal. WTF Subaru.
Bro literally yesterday my lug nut stud on my brz snapped because the shop torqued them too tight. Had to replace 5 of them😢 It was an ez fix tho…just time consuming.
My local Subaru dealership has replaced my broken wheel studs multiple times (for free), and they have been the one's to over-torque them. I will be doing my own wheel change overs now, haha.
You need a bigger breaker bar lol. Never fails when you need to break something loose. And use your weight instead of trying to pull up to break it free, push with your weight over top. Hell jump on the breaker bar if you have too. It will come free much easier regardless
I am sorry for your pain, but I have to say that moment where you sat down in defeat from that lug is like I feel every time I try to do ANY project on my car. Something always goes wrong lol. It was nice to know I'm not alone anymore.
Hey Kevin, the exact same thing happened to me on my 2023 BRZ. I was trying to install lowering springs and all the regular lugnuts came off fine but I could NOT get the locking nuts off even with a giant breaker bar and extension and destroyed the lugnut key. I ordered another key from Mcgard for $20 and it happened AGAIN! I ended up having to get one of those lug nut removal kits where you hammer on the socket and used a long breaker to finally get them off. What a pain! Like anyone is going to steal stock Subaru 17" wheels. BAN LOCKING LUGNUTS!
If you have a lug nut stuck with other lug nuts broken loose already. Snug up the ones you already freed and go back to the jammed lug nut. Works for me almost every time. Great opportunity to make a video on arp lug nuts. (No reason to go extended unless you need them for wheel spacers.)
Hi, mechanical engineer here- overtorqued lug nuts (or any nut/bolt) are my absolute biggest pet peeve, and literally deform and fatigues the threads which significantly weakens them. Please, for the love of god, if anyone is reading this and plans to ugga dugga their shit on, BUY A TORQUE WRENCH. Impacts are for loosening things.
Try to block your wheels to stop it from having any movement before using any tool to loosen off the wheel nut. This is the reason why I bought my 2020 Crosstrek, 2019 Trax being brand new with two conditions: "No lock nut installation on delivery". Mind you wheel lock nuts are likely to be installed at the dealer, not from the factory, without knowing how those monkeys at the dealer installed them. Especially when they tested your brand new vehicle which they call it PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection). This was also the second condition in my Bill of Sale: "No test drive and also no gas fill up, as I did not wish my new vehicle driven by any of those monkeys". I had those conditions entered legally in the Bill of Sale when signed and dated.
Bro don't take lug nuts off like that you'll hurt your back something fierce. Just stand on the ratchet handle, use your body weight, almost zero effort. You already used an breaker bar for more torque, it should be easily done even after it was fastened with air tools.
I need a winter car, and I was thinking about a WRX. But damn these new ones are ugly. Way too much plastic. Maybe if it was color matched. But I just can't with them.
Too many ugga duggas from the tech who put those wheel locks on. Get a 36" 1/2 " breaker bar and that should come off no problem. If your rotors happened to get warped because of the over tightening your video is proof they messed up.
The wheel locks I got from Subaru that were on mine snapped. I torqued it to what Aeroflow said to torque it to, and it didn't feel right. Checked the next day and the head of the lug snapped off. Had to hammer a socket to it and it came off. Spacers are on though, and it looks way better.
Normally I would go to the 3/4 drive ratchet and tap with a hammer to impact break the nuts loose. Done this a few times with old suspension bits also.
The fit, paint match and shape are beautiful! That said, the BA bumper throws the visual balance off. Really needs a sizable wing. It makes the duckbill look like it's for the new supra imo
Oh fuck me I guess 😂 the tape mine came with that red tape kept snapping it kept peeling the double sided off so I said screw it put the oem back on and ordered some legit 3m and imma try again
Duck bill looks good on th e VB.. but those wheel lock lugs. damn.. I just picked up a '24 WRX Premium yesterday. Now I'm curious about my wheel locks.. Going to test them tomorrow. 🫣
*How long is that breaker bar? It looks like one of those extendable ones. Is that the max length? I usually use a 24" one and they seem to be able to break anything loose.*
I just have the same issue with my mustang; the ford dealer over tightened the lug nut and also made them swollen. Now I have to destroy the lug nut to remove the wheels.
Kevin, I am so glad you got this wrx. I recently sold my GR86 for a vb wrx so i was sad that your videos werent applicable to me anymore. but now i guess im back in it!
First mod that will revolutionize the look of that WRX and make it look 12x better: remove that dealer license plate frame!!!! ( Great video as always)
@10:00 dawg use a breaker bar! for reference if nut torqued to greater than the head on the torque wrench, the square drive will rip off--i've done it before on the 32mm axle nut, but same principle here; there is a quick fix, use breaker bar--again for reference if your torque wrench is 18" and you weight 150, then that is 225 foot pounds it will take the nut off dawgie
I would go to dealer and tell them to take those off. Other option? Drill the wheel locks out and destroy them while on the wheel - wont stress the studs more then they are already. Or finally - order a set of longer studs and swap them anyway.
I find it funny how I bought a 2015 WRX when you started off with subiespeed, watched that content the whole time I had the car. Sold it for a truck. Years later Im looking into a GR86 and see you ended up having one making content for it too, how ironic. Waited forever and never got it because I drove a couple states away for a 2023 WRX...and now you also have one, making content for it. Love how I can continue to enjoy your videos, all these years later. Thanks man.
i never use locking lugs, ive broken waay too many of the locks in the threads. besides, if thieves want your wheels theyll find a way to take them off, regardless of wheel locks.
I take the bar off my floor jack and slide it over the socket wrench, essentially making it a huge breaker bar. should remove it easily with little force
Have you ever heard of the breaker bar? It is the bad practice to use a torque wrench to loosen off a wheel lock nut. You should always try to block your wheel before turning any wheel nut off and on.
I didn't use a torque wrench... it's an extendable ratchet 🤦♂️ did you not see how easily the other lug nuts came off? You shouldn't need tons of leverage to break it loos. It's only supposed to be ~90ftlbs.
Another great video Kevin! That sucks that they torqued the heck out of the locks! Can't wait to see what else you do to the ca. The spoiler definitely adds a subtle but good touch to the rear.
Subaru's only guy making the Subaru Sports Cars has retired in 2021.....STI is gone, WRX is fading and Toyota wants to own the 86/BRZ as its own and working on a power plant made by Toyota.
So now I should go check mine I guess... under 2k miles. Pray for me. If I find mine are the same it will go to dealer for proper torque. Not even a question. Nearly 40 grand for a car it had better have properly torqued lugs. Glad I came across your vid. Good luck.
you need to use a jack stick or pole that fits the ratchet for more leverage to take out the lug nut. dont be scared eventually youll have to do it anyways..
The last lug nut that’s on the wheel is carrying the entire load of the wheel. You should always remove the lock nut first before you remove the rest of the lug nuts. The reverse is true when you put your wheel back on. The lock nut should be the last one back on. This way the lock nut sees the least load when you that it off and put back on. On your WRX, torque all the lug nuts back on the wheel to spec. Then try your impact drill to remove the lock nut first.
That is not correct the lugnuts do not bare the full weight of the wheel or vehicle. The center bore does. Pay attention next time you put on a wheel u usually have to push it that last little bit over the lip on the hub before the wheel is flush. Also on several other wheels he only took one other lug nut off so even if your statement where true it would still not apply.
This is also why selecting aftermarket wheels is so critical. Just because the bolt pattern matches and backspacing will clear does not mean that wheel will fit correctly. Luckily most manufacturers use similar centerbore specs on similar bolt patterns.
Bro… it’s a duck tail spoiler. Duck bills or beaks are shaped the opposite way (think the bill on a baseball cap) . Please get your mallard nomenclature correct.
I'd have them replace those studs; they are probably stretched and could fail, especially on the track... I wonder if they are cross-threaded??
Cross threading all four of them would be wild haha I'm sure they just used an air gun on them for too many ugga duggas
Most of my GR86 lug nuts were super tight from the factory. Ended up replacing them with ARP studs. I suspect you will too.
I work for Subaru as a lube tech and I can’t stress enough about how terrible the Subaru studs are in general
@@KevinVo I had some overtightened lug studs. They snapped on the highway and the wheel flew off. Take it seriously, it could kill you.
Ngl imo that style wing looks a lil too small for that trunk.
I can see where you're coming from! Things being too small is something I'm used to 🤣

Why is this being upvoted. His issue isn't breaking the lug nut loose. His issue is wrenching it harder is going to break the stud.
Wow, How could they torque it that much? Thanks for the vid warning; I prob would have snapped mine. Taking it into the dealer to have them do it.

Sometimes you have to tighten it for it to becomes loose. Used to do that with rail car hand wheels. It was strange but it worked. May be worth a try.
