  • Learn how to play modes on guitar can be a confusing experience. Understanding the difference between modes and what they even are is a chore in and of itself.
    In part 1 of the modes series, we see how all 7 different modes are located and derived on a guitar, and get an intro into easy way to remember them relative to shapes you probably already know, before diving further into the individual scales.
    If you want to see how the notes in a scale are found, watch this video first:

    I have watched an endless number of videos trying to explain how they work, why we need them, and how to use them.
    All i can say is they......failed.

    Could even say i get IT.

    THANK YOU! I found your channel due to the love that is Elliott Smith (side note, my favorite record of his is Either/Or and when you described what type of person would pick that one truly as their favorite, it made me feel great) then I stumbled upon your other videos and I love Steve Vai, he's a great guitarist, but when he talks theory I get so lost. 8 years of playing and all I knew was the minor pentotonic scale. These videos really help me out a lot, I just want to thank you for breaking it down way more easily than others have.

    Phrygian = boldness, exuberance, passion, courage, leadership, but in excess pride, rashness, irascibility, violent anger.
    Lydian = good cheer, optimism, subimity, friendliness, laughter, love and song.
    Dorian = sleepiness, lethargy, laziness, slowness, mental dullness, forgetfulness, calmness, internal equanimity, well being.
    Mixolydian = solidity, firmness, steadfastness, rhythm, but with a certain indolent tenaciity.

    Modes are ways you can "paint" emotions into your composition. Learning the scales on the board help guide your ear in locating notes to create a melody, or improvise a riff.

    But what when i want to do same but in key of G minor for example, Does type of scales and order stay the same? Or its like with chords building, when your key is minor all the order is changed.

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  7 років тому +1

      +Mateusz Andraka Well the order never changes BUT if you're in a minor key (aeolian) you just start with the 6. For example, if you're in the key of G minor, just slip G into the 6th note's spot and everything lines up where Bb is the 1 (major) C is 2 (Dorian) etc...

    Sean! I need your help man! I've got a really dumb question That probably won't make any sense but here it goes...
    Years ago I bought a Guitar Grimoire book when I first started playing but was instantly turned off by it because there were so many f'n scale shapes.
    I just started studying modes the last week and it just hit me... Is this why there were so many scale shapes in that book?
    Because for example... If I play Ionian in C all over the fretboard that's 5 different scale shapes I've just played right? If I played the Ionian scale in all 12 keys then that means I just played 60 different scale shapes.... right?
    If that's true... does that mean if I were to play every scale shape in every key in all 7 modes... Does that mean I just played over 400 scale shapes? 😮
    I realize this is probably a very unnecessarily dumb question but I've always wondered why there were so many different scale shapes in that book! Please advise!

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  7 років тому +1

      +Albert A Yup! You're 100 percent correct. Now I can't vouch for the exact scale shapes in the book (there are additional scales out there, especially those inspired by Eastern music) but a lot of them are probably just different positions of the major scale in different keys. So really learning the patterns and moving those shapes is much more valuable than memorizing the charts. Great job!

      @damianmb5 7 років тому

      Yeah I heard about it the same day I wrote you. What do you think is the best approach to learn scales? I see you explain a little when talking about modes but seems difficult to follow without diagrams and like do this 1st, then when done 2nd and so on.

  • @octamedicin
    @octamedicin 6 років тому

    The notes in the modes, do they always fit in the scale of the root note? Or do they sometimes deviate from it?
    Say we're in X major. The note B sharp is not part of its scale. But might it be part of X major mixolydian?
    I've seen tabs/scales of modes where you'll have a mode with say a sharp A, but where that note isn't part of the regular key. Do modes have to "fit" into the key or are they sort of subkeys, if that makes sense?

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  6 років тому

      If I understand your question correctly, modes will always fit into their 'parent' key. Like since mixolydian is the 5th mode of the major scale, the 5th note of ANY major scale will give you the notes of it's mixolydian scale. I hope that made sense.

    Hey, Sean! Just got done with the entire mode series, and I cannot thank you enough! Honestly, however, I have a question, I know we learned all of the modes here in a major scale, so can I apply the same logic to a minor scale? Like in an E Minor Scale, are the notes in that scale gonna be the same modes we see here? Like is the A note gonna be the lydian mode in E minor?

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching! So you're close! The minor scale is technically just the 'aeolian mode'. So if you're in minor, just look at it like the 6th mode of a major scale. So E minor is mode #6 of G major (ionian). Which means the notes you could use are the same as like A dorian, B phrygian etc. Hope that makes sense!

    Backing track is giving G and D notes ( not major and minor color yet) ... Fine!!! Am I right to say the following? ( Self analysed)
    1.G Ionian - G major scale. ( because G is first note in G major scale)
    2. G Dorian - F major scale. ( because G is second note in F major scale)
    3. G Phrygian - D# major scale ( E flat major) ( because G is third(3rd) note in D# major scale)
    4.G Lydian - D major scale ( because G is 4th note in D major scale)
    5. G Mixolydian- C major scale (because G is 5th note in C major scale)
    6. G Aeolian - A# major scale ( because G is 6th note in A# major scale)
    7. G Locrian - I don't know.
    Major scale means ( WWHWWWH pattern starting from the mentioned scales)

    It's too difficult to go that way, if I ask someone in which key he plays, and he's going to say Am ..i'm think of it as it 6th which is C major, so i can play easily just C major scale all around the neck, because C-major have all these tones right? lik C,D,E,F,G,Am and dimi B which i dont think of really never. So always focusing on First or if someone telling me some minor, i know that he's talking about 6th .. so then i just cound another 3rd .. it's way easier to think that way, than learn all this shapes and shit :D .. I dont want to trow something negative here, just I found out that i don't really need to know modes as long as i know in which key someone playing.

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  6 років тому

      Not negative at all my man, in fact that's a great way to look at it. I think the value of modes is more for people that want to start creating more 'exotic' sounding stuff, like playing B locrian riff or something over a B minor progression.

    • @standswithfist806
      @standswithfist806 5 років тому

      I'm just a Bluesman but isn't a "B Locrian riff" just a overly fancy way of sayin' a C Major riff? or better yet, "Hey this is in Bmin I'm gonna play notes pulled from a regular C major scale. " Am I missin' some thang?

  • @allenbrininstool7558
    @allenbrininstool7558 4 роки тому

    Figure them out. play A: Ionian, dorian, phrgian, lydian, mixolydian, locrian. Forget the notes, just play the proper major scale, using A as the starting place. Notice the patterns from A (5th fret). Start slow, play each day...line upon line... After knowing each from the 5th fret, start expanding them from there using your ear.

    I used to be really hung up on how the modes fit together. But now that I have put the different modes to memory independently, it seems more of a theoretical necessity than a practical one. You don't actually play different modes in this fashion. Switching from Ionian to Dorian and then to Phrygian. I recently came across a way of describing the CAGED patterns that helped me to memorize all the modes in all the positions in less than two days. I find it quite remarkable. He isn't a competing instructor but rather a mathematician who follows Ian. I used to work with Crypto guys with mathematics backgrounds and they see the patterns in really unique ways. If you are at all interested, I would love you to take a look at his video description of how to learn the major scale and let me know your thoughts.

    There's only one scale in Western music, learn that and it's all lydian, major etc, it's just what you emphasize

    Dude you say they ahve the same notes then you say you need to flat the 7 on mixolayian. You contradict yourself

    Arrghh you are good, but there's no such thing as the G mode (6.51). This is just confusing. To understand modes you have to think relationally. Modes only have meaning in relation to the scale they are modes of. So G is only the Mixolydian of the C major scale. It makes no sense to talk of one without the other. The best way to learn modes is through the sound of them. Just play a drone C note and then play the major scale but starting on different notes of the C major scale (or any drone note of any scale for that matter).

    Music is great. But why should we be made to think a lively is happy note and a slightly milder is stuffed with sad sense. I can be disciplined to learn these without those abnormal stuff of feeling. Its very annoying to think one is great feeling and another which is great but milder is stuffed with such abnormal thought. It is not hPpy or sad. They are not true. Emotions are stuffed unnecessarily.

    If you change the rootnote in every diffent mode noone is going to understand what the fuck you are doin'! Explain every mode on the same rootnote and it's going to be clear that the modes give a whole different feel.
