The mat in the corner...During summer trade it out for a ceramic tile, it will stay cool even in the heat & give them a place to lay to cool off as well as protect feet 😉
Finally - someone has spoken about those wood frames! Good on you👍🏻 I see videos with wood and yuck….urine! Wire cage is the way to go. You can certainly add those resting pads ….My rabbits show no interest in using them (altho there are frequent ‘redecorating’ days when the mats can end up anywhere). I’m in central NC with heat & humidity. My New Zealand’s do well during the summer. They have ventilation on 4 sides, as you have, and a metal roof. They are housed in the shade of large trees as well. I’m a fan of tarps to protect against cold rain - that stuff that blows sideways! Wire conduit - brilliant!✔ I have my cages hanging inside a screened chicken run. Chained to a high ceiling on the front end with the back-end of cage zip-tied to the hardware screen. The zip ties fail. 😱 Youve just given me a GREAT IDEA for a solution. Thank you! Very thorough presentation. Big water bucket up high….kids taking care of bunnies? Hmmm. I like your individual water bottles with Kid Care. Stay safe and God Bless you and your family.🙏🏻
A friend of mine found out that a colony way is great. We both did the cage way and had a few liters but not great. She heard of the colony way and tried that and she says it works so much better.
I want to start our rabbitry this year, we live in eastern NC. I've seen plenty of builds and I'm mechanically and my carpentry skills are horrible. I do like the design a lot and think yours will be what I start on shortly. This past summer we started with 5 raised beds, our soil drains terrible and I have cardboard and hay down now, just got some horse manure spread out. So this fall and winter projects are soil, rabbitry, and clearing out a very small patch of brush for our food forest. I would add J hooks on the bottom of the cages for added support.
Whatever reason you have rabbits, you may be interested in this information. My neighbour had a similar setup and a predator came by and bit off all the bunnie’ feet from under. The carnage of footless live and suffering bunnies was a sad situation. So next time around, he had every cage had a piece of something rigid (plywood,, whatever) that they could step on and not be sitting “ducks”. Easily pulled out and rinsed/hosed once a week. Save them pain and him his investment.
That is devastating. 😢 Thank you for sharing this warning. Soon, we will have an Anatolian shepherd (livestock guardian dog) in a fenced-in area surrounding the rabbitry to protect them. ❤️
@ His predator turned out to be a trusted guard dog (took a while to establish that info). Better safe than sorry. Provide them a safety from every possibility. You never know.
I missed it. Did you make the cages? It's a great design. Except it would be nice to have a better way to collect the poop. We have TAMUK rabbits here in Zone 10 South Eastern US and they are doing well in the heat. We do have a fan for humid and hot summers. I noticed that you have the baby saver wire. That's great.
No, I didn't. We sent the design and had a local pro build the cages. :) I'm definitely brainstorming some ways to make the manure collection more efficient!
Since the rabbit disease you talked abour is bad in your area, will you have to wash off the garden scraps etc, before you give them to the rabbits? I'm just curious.
I understand your point of view. Rabbit content will be very rare on this channel, but I recommend not clicking on any of our videos with "rabbit" in the title. That way, you can still enjoy all of our tutorials on canning, dehydrating, meals in jars, gardening, etc. 🙂

Yes! The wood really is a problem. 🫣 Lol, frequent "redecorating." 😆 Glad I was able to pass along an idea. ❤️

Your plan sounds wonderful and great tip, thanks! 🙂
So excited for your kids❤!
Thanks! 🤗

Wow!! Definitely, thanks!
Thank you for this video.
You’re welcome! 🤗

We've never had rabbits in our garden (that I know of - no signs), but if we did I definitely would.
Do they not need somewhere dark to sleep ?
My total rabbit knowledge, is that the hop, have big ears and live down holes 😞
No, it's dark enough for sleeping at night. A wild-caught rabbit probably wouldn't like it. But bred rabbits like these do well in open cages.
@@foodprepguide Thanks, something else to add to my rabbit knowledge 🙂
Sorry, I'm not into eating bunnies

Vegan? Vegetarian? If not, why chickens, cattle, hogs, deer, sheep but not rabbits? 🤨
