- Austin Rover - Cellular Telephone Service - Total Mobile Communications - 1985
Copied directly from a dealership VHS video
If you have any Austin/Rover videos, especially relating to the Maestro and Montego models, we would love to hear from you.
Overview of Mobile Telephony available from unipart to Austin Rover owners
Featuring Paul Tomlinson
Channel 5 productions (not that one!)
1985
I had one of these fitted to a 1972 Series 1 Daimler that I owned. I thought it would be useful and quite flashy. Just the bloody line rental was £180 a month, so dear in fact that I couldn't afford to make any calls.
"The weather's DIABOLICAL!"
What a gorgeous SD1 at the start.
I had a white V8 Vanden Plas back in the late 80's
Little did they know in 1985 that we would actually be able to watch this piece on a mobile phone in 2018! Is that a Lamborghini Countach at 9.28? - he's moved on a little from the SD1!
With the charges I remember he must own the phone company! Only need to make 3 calls an a months line rental for a Lamborghini, he's got a roller on order for the next 6 calls in!
we had the NMT450 mobile phone system in sweden.
Both Ericsson and Nokia made 450 mobile phones.
the car versions was the size of a small suitcase.
the batterie was the size of a small suitcase but when you connected
it in the car you just simply connected the reciver to a connector under the dash.
Thanks for uploading this intresting video.
👍👍🇸🇪👍👍
7:38 It’s exclusively designed and engineering approved to the high standards Austin Rover owners naturally expect. Oh dear.
Presented by Mr Peter Tomlinson.
I remember him from TISWAS.
Although that pinhead can't act for toffee, at least he had his head screwed on- he's rollin round in a 7 series, not a piece of BL shite.
Don’t rub it in!
'Twenny million quid down the swannie!'
Ok I get it: when the car breaks down (hypothetically) you can still phone your clients
Brain, Freddie, Roger Deacon! Someone's a Queen fan
I bet the cost of this service was astronomical in 85!
It was.
I paid more for my mobile monthly payment than that I do now. I was with Securicor £25/month
So Austin Rover recommended UniqueAir, eh? Hardly impartial, since both were owned by BL.
How did someone who can't figure out how a coin slot works make it so far in business?
He didnt...he lost £20 million...
That gave me a laugh :)
I imagine the stench of piss distracted him
I’m sold!
I would love that 3500 at the beginning of the video
I had a white V8 Vanden Plas in the late 80's.
I wish I still had it :-/
@@apemoon1731 terrible quality but they still look the dogs bollocks
Lol that start bit was filmed near me in coven heath just off m54
Ah the irony that a BMW is used in this video. Also, I believe this acting is on par with most porn films!
futureheaded I also spot a mk3 escort in this video too!
That beamer has held out until 2010 while the SD1 was out in 1993...
Lost £20m worth of business? Wow!
Duncan Kelman Do you think he lost the company BMW over that mistake? 😉
Back in the day when companies thought the only mobile ever would be firmly screwed into you car. Rover must have lost a bundle on this one.
Carmakers sold built-in phones until the early 2000's. The higher transmitter power and large external antenna were desired when cell coverage wasn't as good. A lot of people, particularly men who didn't have handbags, didn't want to carry large, bulky phones. It wasn't until the consumer models of the Motorola StarTAC, around 1997-98 did people really carry phones daily. Today, most cars have built-in LTE Wi-Fi hotspots, which is basically the same thing.
Remind me which on of these companies still trades
BMW bought Rover for the Land Rover and Mini brands. The rest wasn't worth saving. Unsurprisingly.
And the William Shatner ham acting award goes to.... 🤣🤣🤣
I thought blimey the leather interior looks good in that Austin Rover, then he pulled over and it was a BMW 🙄
Where do I buy such a vehicle?
40 MILLION DEUTSCHMARKS BOB
Daddy would you like some sausage?
Where's your LeBron Freddie...
If the phone was as good as the quality of Austin Rover cars then it would be out of order most of the time
No talking on your mobile and driving there. How safe were they back then...
There were so few around that it wasn't seen as a problem back then.
Bon soir
🤣
Geez.....just leave earlier
I’ll stick with my iPhone thanks.
