  • Mexico is seeing a manufacturing boom amid US-China trade tensions. More American companies are outsourcing factory operations to Mexico - with, among other reasons, the need to de-risk supply chains.
But more Chinese corporations are also investing billions in Mexico as a production base to get closer to regional consumers - a practice called nearshoring - and to get around US tariffs imposed on Chinese exports since the 2018 Trump era. Since 2023, China has overtaken the US as Latin America’s top trading partner.

    01:08 Mexico’s manufacturing renaissance

China is doing business with Mexico because they have a bilateral agreement. If Mexico sells “assembled” products of Chinese goods to the USA it is a completely normal business transaction which any country is allowed to do in a free trade. It doesn’t mean that China is trying to open a backdoor to the USA market despite of sanctions. China wants to do business with any country in the world as she abides by the principle of free trade while the USA is only talking about “free trade and democracy” but doing the opposite.

China is moving toward higher value economies like EV cars, green energy, large scale ship building, and computer chip manufacturing. It is outsourcing to ASEAN (in particular Vietnam) and Latin America. ASEAN is close to China. Latin America is close to USA.
China also outsources to East Africa. In the next 10 years, the amount of finished products coming out of China is dramatically reduce. Yet the component export from China will dramatically increased. It is really no DE-RISK or DE-COUPLE. It is just China moving up the value chain. And you will hear less about China, and more about "finished product" exporters like Vietnam and Mexico.

In contrast to the car industry, only a few technicians are required on the robot workforce production line. Industry 4.0 is not a joke, and guess who suffers the most? The US Foreign Policy to keep Asia poor and divided as stated in a top-secret U.S. Foreign Policy document written 76 years ago is still in force.
    February 24, 1948, Declassified U.S. Foreign Policy:
Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time.
Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975.

Despite de-coupling, de-risking, friend-shoring and whatever you call it, China remains the global manufacturing hub. The trend will continue for China to export less and less goods to the USA and more and more goods to countries that do not impose trade tariffs and other restrictive trade practices.

Today 2024, China has 3.4 trillion dollars in reserves of foreign currency and gold. Just to have an idea, the Chinese reserves are more than the combined reserves of Japan, United States, Russia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Germany .
Mexico has 5% of the reserves that China has.
Plus China owns over one trillion dollars in US foreign debt bonds. Mexico owns 11 billion in US bonds, the difference is 90 times more.
And last but not least, the GDP of China is over 17 trillion, Mexico is 1.8 trillion which means the economy of China is almost 10 times the size of Mexico. So there's really no comparison.

Not sure why its supposed to be a back door when its legal
China just playing 4D chess while the US is asleep and spending all their time fighting against themselves
I know of a solar panel manufacturer that secured projects in Mexico, then announced that they will also open a manufacturing plant for their solar panels - thats strategic thinking
Now those panels are Made In Mexico and available for sale in the US without being penalised by sanctions or tariffs - thats smart ( and legal)
