You left your gas station situation totally vulnerable. Never leave your door open while pumping. It's a subliminal invitation towards uninvited attention.
Where were your keys? On you or in the van?
What would you have done had he jumped into your van? It's like leaving your front door open to strangers.
I actually lock my van while pumping gas.
I walk with a don't "f" with me attitude. Predators prey on young pretty women. Being nice is what they are hoping for - as you know.
    Be more cautious & careful.

As a nice person, I had to learn to keep a poker face when dealing with strangers. Predators test people assessing their body language to determine if they’re an easy target. A straight face and eye contact goes a long way to scare off bad guys.

Your comment gave me chills because it reminded me of a peculiar encounter with a stranger that evoked similar feelings. I've experienced stranger situations, but it's true what they say about trusting your gut. There was an odd vibe. He stared at my outfit-cargo pants and boots, as if I were dressed for a hike, though I was merely strolling through a flea market. He complimented my boots and looked me in the eye. I thanked him and I broke eye contact, as compliments from strangers aren't unusual, but he lingered beside me, observing me, like he completely forgot why is he there in that flea market and hyperfocus on me which made me uncomfortable. Eventually, I met his gaze and asked, "Can I help you?" with a seriousness that implied I was prepared for confrontation. He slightly bowed his head, took a deep breath, gave me a final sidelong glance, and then hurried away. It's that weird feeling when people that looked good and well put together act that way to strangers. or maybe, I watched too much psychopath genre series lol

      Agree with you....
Or, at least, cover up more, when in the higher crime rate, etc.
I too don't get gas at night, I rarely go shopping at night either.. unfortunately, the way things are you have to be very careful, especially when by yourself and at night!. I would also put up the hair, especially as it's so long.... If you would have to fight it would or could get in the way. Please also get the better window covers for the back doors that match the others. I hope you have a really good lock on the back doors and they are secure. At one point driving, I thought I saw a space at the top of the doors between them...

It depends upon the area. I live in Los Angeles. In a place like Hollywood, where there are so many "street walkers," many of whom are also on drugs, dressing like that can attract the attention of guys that are selling them, like the guy who approached you at the gas station. It can also attract the attention of potential "johns" and/or the police, who might wonder if you are selling sex from your van.
However, dressing like that in the commercial area of Beverly Hills would not cause people to jump to such conclusions. You would just look like another young, fashion-conscious shopper and/or tourist.
So be careful how you dress until you know an area better, especially if you are trying to remain "stealth" in your van. It shouldn't be that way, but it is.

Hi Tory, While it is good to be vigilant do not let these worries ruin your day. You would be at far more risk living in a flat and going out Friday and Saturday night to a club for drinks, the risk of spiking or just being abused while drunk are much higher. A risk of 1 in 176 in one area is not your risk as there will be people not taking any precautions and people being stupid with their safety, being drunk or buying and using drugs or just being out at 2am. The world is normally much safer than people think but where I am in Manchester hundreds of young people were injured and a number killed just leaving an Ariana Grande concert, my wife was working in the front corner of our garden just an hour before a car rolled and bounced snapping the fence posts to the ground where she had been, in 1996 the IRA bombed Manchester with a 1500Kg (3300lb) bomb in a lorry it did around the equivalent of $1.7 billon damage but they gave a 90 minute warning so 75000 people were evacuated with 200 injured and no fatalities. No where is absolutely safe and some places and some activities are more dangerous than others, the risks you are taking living your life are minimal.

I lived in a van for about a year after my house burned down. My greatest problem was the absolute lack of something USEFUL to do all day. I'm a man capable of looking after himself, so 'safety' wasn't an issue. (I also deceided early that the best place to park was between other vehicles on tree-lined SUBURBAN side-streets.) The local police (notified by a passing 'security operator') came to have a 'stern word' to me, but left after I pointed I had every right to park on a PUBLIC ROAD, as long as I was in a registered vehicle. Being wary is all well and good; bu not being seen as a 'pushover' goes a long way toward solving any problems.

Moreover, they DID recognise my name (I had a long and violent anti-police history years ago) and stuck strictly to protocols. Funny ending: a sympathetic policewoman found me a villa unit (VERY good spot and virtually cost-free). When I refused to move in on principal they held a discussion and threatened to declare my van 'unroadworthy' (which it was, strictly speaking) which meant I couldn't use it on public roads.

They make them with lockable doors that allow you to go back and forth between the cargo area and the cab without ever having to get out of the van. 3) your window coverings you put up at night are a glaring sign that says "somebody is in here sleeping" 4) I was glad you left hollywood. I've been on those streets. Unspeakable evil things go down there. Now that I'm an adult, I think that place is completely demonic.

And looks like you're getting exactly what you are dressed for!!!

If you like animals, you should consider getting a dog as your companion. I would recommend a medium size dog. Something along the lines of a blue healer, or a Rottweiler. I have had both of those, and nobody will ever approach my vehicle. They get within 20 feet, and my dog starts barking, and they start backing up.
Nobody will ever try to get in your van with you.
    Be safe and have fun😊

I always have an AirPod in my ear and my phone and say I’m sorry but I’m on a phone call or on the phone with my husband and you have to talk firmly and strong. Body language must be hard core and not make yourself look weak even when your dressed nice. I do Lyft and take breaks by talking a small walk or pumping gas and I deal with strangers asking for change or drugs. I live in the area and drive all over LA so it’s an all day thing. Can’t show weakness or vulnerability.
I know LA well and know where to park and drive.

The problem people are too paranoid and afraid when they visit other places. People are usually good and nice by nature, it's usually the visitor who are dangerous from the locals. The locals are protecting themselves too so being nice is still the best way to protect yourself even if you are uncomfortable.

My dear Tory, it's surprising to notice a sense of fear in your videos, particularly in the vibrant city of LA. What concerns me the most is the frequency of your apprehension in various videos. I've had the opportunity to travel extensively across Europe in a camper van (almost the same), experiencing a fear-free journey throughout the continent. It makes me wonder about the current situation in the USA. I mean, isn't the essence of van life about embracing freedom rather than constantly being on guard?

I never knew how many women never felt safe. I'm a larger man I'm very strong I have a 1000lb deadlift I'm very bold and very direct people get the idea that I clearly have the ability to defend and hurt people if I have to but I'm a very very gentle easy-going person with a great sense of humor I've worked with Street people and including street people. You should always have always have in purse a couple tools of quarters and a sock. This is a very effective defensive weapon. It works better when you are moving backwards
Used it will break arms skulls and bones very wicysmd effectively. I teach these basic weapon systems now if you have the quarters of the socks and you stopped by a plolice. It is an illegal weapon but side by side it is nothing.

I'm reading all the comments and I'm dumbfounded by the fact that everyone wants to make suggestions but you gotta realize that Hollywood is a weird place to be in. I mean, it's not the area. It's the people. Especially since there's a lot of homeless people and creeps who are not from there.

Just dont pump gas in neighborhood where a lot of blacks and Hispanics live bc there are always something going on and there are so many criminals. While pumping gas try not to be too cautious like looking around too often. It looks like you're too afraid that can actually attract criminals so look around occasionally and act like normal.

I plan and schedule casino night stays free food room comps but you hv to register with license. The parking lot hv security patrols and nights. You hv free stay just sleep with the others in the lot if you are a vanlifer with no free room. So many advantages by using the casinos as a tool in van life. Free drinks ice climate control security 24/7/365
One year 21 or 22 i landed a free weekend stay that amazingly saved me fr a ice shutdown of the states involved and i had no worries cozied up in my free room for 3 days with free wifi, tv, safe, ice, shower, toilet, fridge, microwave and my airfryer. The sun came out on checkout day melting the frozen highways just in time for me to checkout 11am

Security being one of the most important female need I hope you got what is necessary for you to protect yourself, something like a gun for example. Now in California it was a kind of difficult to carry. In the state where I live we have constitutional carry, no permit needed. I will also say something politically incorrect but you need to find a man in your life. One of the main thing that a man can provide is protection. As long as he is not of the woke kind and is a real man.

Maybe in retrospect it might seem that acting nice was the wrong choice and even though people say hindsight is 20/20, it actually isn't always that easy to know what is the best way to act. Some characters might get aggressive when you are rude or mean to them. In most cases it's best to go with your intuition and trust yourself to do what's right in the moment.
I can relate to how feeling cute and dressing that way is somehow motivating. I was wondering if you also feel more vulnerable that way? Not just because it attracts attention but also like emotionally or something?

That’s not a thing that’s getting bad around California, especially San Francisco are people breaking into cars it’s getting so bad people are leaving their trunks open when their cars are parked to let everyone see that there’s nothing in it worth stealing
