  • In the latest episode of the Tes international podcast we chat with Jennie Devine, an international school leader with 18 years experience working in the international teaching sector.
Having taught in Italy, Scotland, Colombia and Ecuador Ms Devine has plenty of experience to draw on to offer advice and insights for those just starting out in an international role, those intrigued by the idea of teaching abroad and wanting to find out more or even those well-established but wondering how to move their career forward.

    This was great to hear!
I’m just curious about how do teachers in these positions maintain relationships and how does it affect personal relationships?
I want to take the leap and go into the international job market but I’m mindful that I want to start a family and wondering how to do while away and working away from my home country.

Well if you want an international career, you should probably find an internationally minded partner. Teaching in particular means you’d need to be in another country for 9-10 months out of the year. There are ways around this, you can enroll your kids in IB schools so they don’t lose school progress when you move. But yeah, you want this life and a family, you’re gonna have to make sure that you’re family are happy being international.
