      So true. That’s what I honestly love about movies. This is the only movie that really strikes the real feeling of reality. Thanks to the music done with Danny Elfman and the how the films perspective and filter was.

      I thought about this movie every day for a year after I saw it. It was almost immediately in my top 10 of all time. Wallace was one of the most brilliant minds of his generation and the authenticity with which Jason Segel plays him, and Jesse Eisenberg as Lipsky, they both deserved Oscars. Same for the director and screenwriters. I get emotional every time I watch the trailer again.

    RIP David Foster Wallace--he was one of my creative writing professors at ISU back in 2001. A very interesting mind and a sad ending. He is missed and I never have forgotten the things he taught me. I hope the film does him justice, though his books do that already.

    Jason Segel is usually known for starring in half hearted, soulless comedies, but his portrayal of David Foster Wallace is probably his greatest dramatic role he ever did. Jesse Eisenberg also did a chilling portrayal of David Lipsky.

    • @danielhenrysilver6607
      @danielhenrysilver6607 9 років тому

      First of all, a lot of those films haven't been released yet so don't be so quick to say "there is no way". I never expected The Grand Budapest Hotel or Boyhood to maintain buzz throughout last year being released so early but it turned out pretty well.
      Don't see where Hardy's getting a nomination from, Steve Jobs could suck, The Program could suck, Black Mass could definitely suck (I hope it doesn't). Besides, Jason Segel would probably be getting a supporting nod and so wouldn't be competing with any of those actors in the first place.

    I don't understand why people are keep saying something is wrong with the actor cause I just watched this movie yesterday and I found it AMAZING. No matter the actors or the plot, everything matches so perfectly that you really think you are watching the life or an extraordinary but yet ordinary writer with a ordinary reporter who want to be extraordinary. The movie GIVES YOU FEELINGS, speechless yet emotionally and it's not even meant to be that way. SO I GOTTA SAY I LOVE THE MOVIE AND I LOVE JESSE EISENBERG.

      I feel like people focus far too much on a physical likeness when it comes to films such as this. To me it matters less if the actor resembles the person and is more about whether or not they have the ability to truly embody the person as a whole. I mean I know it’s a rather broad example, but Leo DiCaprio looks absolutely nothing like Jordan Belfort but he did an incredible job of becoming him for that role which was the only thing that mattered to tell that story

      Well he gets ripped mostly because he is a good actor, can’t deny that. But when so young and already 70% of roles are same cocky smarmy nerdy but cooler then you roles. Deserves the hate. Pacino gets ripped for some annoying things he always does and has did 100s of roles. Hard not too. So if already annoyed for actin exact same in several roles (and he has). That annoys people more then bad actors.

    Jason Segel appears to have nailed DFW's mannerisms to a tee. If you compared the scenes from this trailer with Wallace's video recorded interviews, you would think they are the same person. Not only does he gesticulate and sound like DFW, but he also looks like him too: protruding chin and broad shoulders.
    After my initial skepticism about this casting, I am now looking forward to this film with excitement!

    Jason Segel is kind of an odd choice for David Foster Wallace - I don't know if he'll be able to capture Wallace's nervous brilliance (something Eisenberg is better at, imo) along with DFW's repressed vanity (which, in a manner, contributed to his brilliance - the fear of being "found out as a fraud," etc). But this trailer is promising in all respects. I look forward to the movie.

    • @fredericgermay7776
      @fredericgermay7776 9 років тому +2

      ***** Well, that is a salient point, but I never suggested that Eisenberg play DFW. I simply said that I felt he could better portray that nervous intensity. All the same, there is some precedent for going with a better actor over a solid lookalike. Par example: Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe, Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, and David Oyelowo as MLK. But I do look forward to the film, regardless, and I have been surprised by Seger before (Jeff Who Lives At Home).

    It's an adaptation of David Lipsky's book "Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself" which details his time on the road with real-life author David Foster Wallace (whom everyone should read because he's just phenomenal) during a book tour. David Foster Wallace would never have submitted himself to this level of schmaltz. It is so important what he stood for(what he stood against). He never bought into the system, he saw it for what it was and choose to live as free as he could. This biopic completely missed his point. Our version of liberty is one which does the opposite where the reality is sacrifice for the principle of pleasure. The irony in everything, movies and the Simpsons. There is no truth or beauty anymore, you have to tarnish it. This movie makes him look like a hipster offering armchair platitudes or stoner philosophy, exactly what he stood against. And using music from a band like REM whose music has a message that deeply meaningful feeling is a substitute or par with having critical thought or knowledge, but had not movement behind it saying anything, represent a typical example of postmodern thinking. He was totally about getting out of the adopting a mentality where you just choose an easy life by not challenging the established thought or the political structure around your life. For a sort of shallow reality where you had comfort and pleasure but emptiness, where careers served as corrridors to the security of position and status but narrow, cellular lives of predictability.

    • @bubz4196
      @bubz4196 9 років тому +48

      marshall886 First of all, it's not a biopic. Secondly, I agree to the sentiment that REM is ill placed, and likely a studio decision, but what about this film appears to be ironic? If I remember correctly, DFW detested the fear of sentimentality which was a byproduct of the ironic movement. He didn't like the cliche'd stories of love that everyone has seen 250 times, but this film seems pure and alive and very "salt of the earth"-esque. It's two guys having a conversation and communicating through human interaction. And he offers no 'armchair psychology' in this trailer. Telling someone to "just be a good guy" is not armchair psychology nor is it stoner philosophy. It's just David being... David. I only met him once at a book signing, but from what I recall this is him down to a T.
      "This is all nice a beautiful, but none of it is real." -DFW
      This film feels real. No Hackneyed Hollywood conflicts, no CGI, and no fear of being emotional and human. Like it or not, this is how humans behave and what we are and how we love. We talk to one another and we bond. This is the story of two men doing just that, and it is probably going to be a touching one. And all of this speculation whether or not this is really "Wallace" is rather pointless. From what I hear it adheres almost directly to the David Lipsky's transcripts, so like it or not, it's nonfiction.

    Sadly, Jason Segel didn't get an Oscar nomination for his role :/ such a brilliant performance

    I kinda think Jesse Eisenburg would portray a genius like Wallace better of the two. Jesse has been pretty honest about taking prescriptions for his anxiety and it'd lend to use David's voice better.

      ***** mmmm....no I don't think so at all. Segel doesn't have that sprightly and oblivious vibe about him. Even when he's just sitting there at 0:13, there's something heavy and heartbreaking in his demeanor that carries throughout the trailer. Eisenberg, yeah - neurotic, mile-a-minute thinking. Segel - nah I think he really transformed for this film.

    I might actually be down to see this one. Usually unless there are lots of absurd explosions and Scifi crap in the movie I don't bother. But this looks good.

    Weird... This was filmed in my buddy's old house in Hudsonville Michigan. Not sure why they couldn't just film the whole thing in Minnesota if it takes place there

      Berry Griffin Michigan has better tax incentives for filmmakers. Similarly, DC shows often film in Baltimore for that same reason

    Speech @ 2:00 is OBVIOUSLY after Jason Segel's character dies or something...

  • @excellent_name
    @excellent_name 9 років тому +3

    Everyone thinks the speech was a eulogy and is ignoring the fact that Eisenberg is a reporter and could very well narrate/read a blog or something about this if the plot so desired. Let's pump the brakes on the conclusion train.
