  • Hello fellow riders.
    Not very successful replacement of the chain and sprockets on my Versys.
    JT sprockets somehow don't fit the D.I.D chain even though they are sold as a set.
    Has this happened to any of you?
    I am happy to read your comments on this.

    I noticed when you adjusted the chain, the 2 alignment marks didn't look exactly in the same place (if you trust the marks.) That could have caused the excess noise. I just replaced my Versys chain and went with the Vortex 42 tooth rear sprocket. Stock is 43. It dropped the rpm by 5-600 in 6th at highway speeds. I haven't owned a chain drive MC in many years and curious about the life of modern MC chains. With the stock set-up, the rpm was almost 5000 at 80 mph. It now is only 4300 rpm, which sounds more relaxed and pleasing to my ears. I kept the front sprocket because it showed little wear and no slop with the new chain. As a side note, my stock chain had over 33,000 miles when replaced and it only needed 4 adjustments throughout its life. All the chains from my 70's & 80's MC's lasted maybe 10-15,000 miles. I was very pleased with the chain life of the stocker. I looked down at an earlier post and saw that you only got 16,777 miles out of your stock chain. I'm pretty religious about cleaning the chain with kerosene and then using chain lube every 3-400 miles. Thanks for the video. Nice detail and I appreciated the fast forward when removing bolts and parts. Hope you get better mileage out of your new chain.

    The original front sprocket is in rubber - that's why it's quiet. Therefore, the front sprocket is always best to buy OE. Video, as always, great MotoAndy :)

    • @MotoAndy
      @MotoAndy  3 роки тому

      But that doesn't explain why the rear sprocket also makes strange sounds, theoretically not much different from the original in terms of thickness or structure.

      hmm, that's interesting indeed. but in the video at the end it seems that your chain is a bit too loose. Maybe it just looks like this in the movie ?

      @@zoltaibiza when you ride the chain works with the suspension so sometimes it is looser sometimes more tight, I set it as needed, so it's just an illusion in the movie

    @MotoAndy Just a tip - the buffers inside the rear sprocket hub are way too large, at least they were on mine, and push the hub outwards. When you tighten the rear axle, you push the hub back inwards but that creates a tension inside the hub bearing - mine got killed in about 50k.

    Hi Andy, top video and thanks for sharing as you always do, even though you had some disappointment. Not sure if its 100% equivalent / relevant, but I had 2 VFR Crossrunners before my V1K. Both had that exact same chatter from the front sprocket. Both on 100% original fit oem kit(ie Honda factory fitted). You could hear it clearly even moving the bike round the garage. Couldn't really hear it at speed. Anyway , quick check on the forums confirmed it was typical of vfrs. No concerns raised unless there was undue play of the front sprocket on the splines other than the normal fraction of a mm float. Many 1000,s of miles done on both without any issue other than raised eyebrow when pushing it round. Or spinning it up on the stand. Anyway...just thought I'd add this to the discussion. Cheers ....hope all is well in Cloggy and otherwise with your V1K

    It's just that OEM front sprocket have rubber damper and your JT don't. JT have front sprocket with or without rubber damper, except for once, i always used JT front sprockets with damper (on 2 of my previous Z750 and now on Z900). Nothing wrong with sprocket without dampener, it's just louder without rubber damper.

    • @MotoAndy
      @MotoAndy  3 роки тому +1

      to disassemble the chain you have to break the link or cut it, otherwise you will not take it off, because I was replacing it with a new chain so there was no point in breaking it, it was simply faster to cut. And the wheel must be removed to change the sprocket.

      That rubber ring makes the whole thing much more quiet than the one without the rubber ring
      This being said, it’s only a noise problem and not a mechanical problem
      I would suggest also to realign the chain with a tool and not rely on those mark on the swing arm ... they are not very precise and might have contributed to the excessive noise
