I knew a guy who did this. Coffee maker broke, so he bought the same model, put the old one in the box, and returned it. Worked a few times, then his prime account was banned, and his whole account was shut down. Turns out Amazon will do that if they catch you.
I know someone who did that but with trading cards. They bought boxes, kept the valuable cards and replaced them with commons, resealed everything, checked the weight and returned them. They did that across multiple accounts, IP addresses and physical addresses to minimize the chances of getting caught and they made approximately $1000 off this gig. They stopped now but as far as I know they never got caught and they're still my friend
Used to work at Amazon - we had systems in place for this. Buyers would be banned for good and there is a range of tools from ip, name tracking, cc tracking etc to ensure you never get to purchase again. We would literally have customers email, call, 100’s of times to try and get reinstated under different names, addresses etc, but would never work.
I know a camera box would be checked to resell it. $5 stuff, I figure they don't really care about. I've received a used baseball glove with the thumb cut off instead of the wrist brace I needed, for example, so the return dept didn't actually check. It was actually illegal for Amazon to sell it to me like that because of my FSA, but that's a different story. But a $2k camera? Yeah, they're going to care about that and check it to resell it.
That's me... That totally depends on your tone... If a customer is rude to me, I don't give refunds ever... But if a person talks nicely, I give them free refunds 😂
Yeah, they used to be a lot more loosey goosey with that one, now it's gotta be a pretty cheap item. They left someone's package at my house (like somehow a good like hour+ away) and wanted me to return it on my own dime. I was like, excuse me? Give me a label but I ain't spending my money on it. They never did give me a label. I never did send it back.
same thing happened with my mom, she ordered OM3 fish oils and one of them exploded in the jar on the way over. She got a refund and got to keep the extra jar 😭
This is actually why my family business went out because during covid 95% of our returns were the actual item sold and amazon wouldn’t give us our money back even when filing claims of fraud, its like the consumer wins no matter what, unless its a big ticket item like that camera nothing will be done for the business owner
Worked in the Amazon return warehouse and it’s tagged as a fraudulent return and is noted and photos are taken of the item. The account can then be closed depending on the value of the item.
@marcosc7318 id like to know how true this is. The amount of things that get resold when they shouldn't be, or in my case, I've had 3 orders in this past month flagged as "returning the wrong item" when it wasn't.

And then they sent a replacement. Well... I guess it really worked out bc i had issues with mine a month after and then gave it back...with a different buy. So its wtv.
As someone who worked with Amazon. Expensive items not longer get refunded with the first scan. And sometimes it takes up to a month to process specially Apple Products. Also phones, computers and other devices are checked including the serial number. So you can’t return an used iPhone for example
Not to mention, they already HAVE noticed. Theft of any kind, such as return fraud, is calculated into product pricing and wages. You're not stealing from the ''big bad'', ''massive multinationals''. You're not Robin Hood, you're not stealing from billionaires, you're stealing from everyone, most notably, those with the lowest incomes who actually FEEL how steep these prices become, and the people who are hit the hardest by their wages remaining low. People with less expendable incomes whose wages stay low because of theft and for whom higher prices of products really take a toll on their already low income. Theft fucks over poor people, which is a nice allegory for how difficult it is to resist and defy a system that is accelarating the divide between the affluent and impoverished.
Actually because of this amazon has in some countries released no return policy for pricy items and in some cases where pricy were actually returned to amazon, amazon itself claims it to be wrong item sent back and deny your refund. There are so many lawsuits against amazon currently because of it
They also have open-box delivery in some countries because delivery people were opening the package, resealing it, and giving customers the wrong items. So they have an open-box delivery option; the driver will open the box in front of you, and if the item is not what you ordered, you can refuse delivery. Also, in some countries, they mostly use cash and have a cash-on-delivery option, too.
"No questions asked return policy" in India was changed to we will check the product at your doorstep before collection, and taking it to the warehouse. It got ruined within a year or 2.

also must be interesting when the package weights don’t line up 🥴
I used to work in a return center. If something like this happened and it was over a centaur dollar amount, we’d give their info to another department that worked with police. Your account and card would be banned as well, and your address.
The simple fact that you feel the need to do a PSA on what stealing is says a lot about how far we've fallen.
I’ve tried to return stuff before and sometimes they say no, just keep it.
as someone who works at a ups store I have seen this done tons of times and most people do get the refund the first couple of times
Fraud is hella wild especially when they have your address credit card everything…
there was a group back in 2023 i believe and they were originally doing refund scams on amazon of expensive items by filling boxes with dirt to match the exact weight. they ended up social engineering an amazon employees account and were requesting refunds then accepting them from the employees account. they took like 2 mil if i remember correctly
The worst thing is people have been getting those broken/old items instead of the new items they bought because Amazon doesn't double check shit.
In India we previously had Amazon returns and people did this same BS for electronic devices.
Amazon stopped their no questions asked return policy and now it is much much more difficult to return an electronic item.
“Money Glitch” is the new word for literal fraud apparently
Amazon knows. You can maybe get away with it 1 time, but if it happens again your account is flagged and no longer are able to do a return for this kind of stuff.
Small businesses trying to make a living selling stuff from temu to Amazon....
Amazon is just the middle man who takes a huge cut.
I work for a friend in one of those small business and yes, we have a bunch of orders, we spend money and to have a pavkage retured like that is very frustrating and affects our work conditions
That happened with an expensive desk from Michael’s and I literally ended up buying bricks and rags in a sealed box - IN THE STORE. NOT ONLINE. Serious bull 🐂 💩
