  • Poison hemlock just one of those common plants that grows aggressively in a lot of places. When you can recognize it you won’t believe how many places you’ll actually see it. It’s important to be able to recognize it because it is so dangerous. In the video I show the difference between some plants that look very similar like Yarrow and Queen Anne’s lace or wild carrot. It’s very important to know the difference. Hopefully this video makes it clear

    They stay poisonous 3 years after being dead, it's recommended to put inside of a trash bag (I'd double or triple bag) and throw it out in the trash. Personally if I had a large amount I'd dig a 6 foot deep hole and bury it.

    This was a better tutorial than the ones put out by herbalists. THANK YOU! Apparently, I have been growing a single poison hemlock plant right in my front garden border for several years, admiring it's bluish-green ferny leaves and lovely profile, at 8 feet tall and vase-like spread. I weeded any other sprouts out so that I could have just the one, feature plant. Imagine that. It's a beauty right now, covered in ladybug larvae and a few adult ladybugs. As soon as these visitors depart, I will carefully grub the plant out. I will miss its summery presence next year, but maybe by then I can find a nice, native Angelica atropurpurea to take its place. Again, THANK YOU for making this excellent video.

      Poison hemlock is a biennial plant so it dies after the second year. You must be growing something else similar.

    Throwing it into the field after it’s dead isn’t good enough ... my understanding is that the dead stalk is still fatal for up to 3 years. Can’t burn it either, the smoke is also fatal.

      Nasty stuff, it’s everywhere, I didn’t realize how prevalent it was until I could recognize it. I’ve been looking into how to stop it from reproducing, as far as I can tell if you get the plume cut off before it flowers this will stop the next generation. You Gotta make sure you’re careful cut those plumes off. Rubber gloves clean off your pruners nasty stuff

      That’s a great point on cleaning the pruners off afterwards. I’ve used a lock blade to loosen the soil around the tap roots and then it dawned on me what would happen if I nicked myself with the blade doing something else later. Indians purportedly would spike arrow tips with the juice from the roots to make poison arrows.

      Any idea how it effects chickens? Will they eat it, does it effect them, and does it effect the eggs (or humans if we eat the eggs?) I’ve been trying to get rid of the stuff before our chickens get into it, but the stuff just keeps popping up in random places. Horrible horrible weed.

    • @livefree6878
      @livefree6878  5 років тому

      That’s a good question about is the chickens will get into it, I have free range chickens and as far as I know I haven’t lost any chickens to it but, I have certainly lost a lot of chickens because they’re free range, I need to research that more. I’ve never actually seen them packing at it. So far I’ve been able to keep this stuff off the property. But it doesn’t take but a half mile and it’s everywhere. It could probably invade overnight. I’m definitely going to Talk with some others that have chickens and are pretty knowledgeable on the stuff as well. If I find anything out I’ll let you know

    Should I be worried if this plant touched my leg which had a cut on it? I also touched my legs afterwards with my hands and i wasnt able to wash my hands for about 5 hours after this exposure. I think i touched my eyes as well so could that be dangerous? Should I disinfect my phone as my hands touched it and my car and get rid of the clothes I had on that hike? Its also been about 6 hours since i touched this plant and i havent had any symptoms yet except nervousness and a higher heart beat but that could be because I'm kinda freaking out right now. I dont want to die or go to the hospital but I'm scared! Any insight can help and id really appreciate it! Thank you in advance if you do respond back to my message! I also subbed to your channel!

      It causes paralysis through the whole body and when it reaches a major organ... well we don't talk much about that. Actually i always say if anyone wants to poison me I want to be poisoned with this plant. You probably have seen at shops Queen Anne's lace, yarrow, or crow parsley.
