I just found out your channel a couple of hours ago. I really enjoyed your experimenting with Kiwi vines. I just finished watching the whole series from the beginning without any break!!! waiting for the next update :)
My single kiwi plant is about 15 months old and I'm happy it's still alive because I'm not a gardener so at about 6 months all of the leaves died but with patience and a bit of hope at about 13 months all of its leaves grew back granted the kiwi has been stunted and is relatively small. Anyways Love your videos and hope you have a great day!
Hey Rob that is awesome! I remember these guys as tiny seeds. Had no idea you had a whole series now! Soon as I posted this comment I am gonna sub and hit that notification button. I lost some of my big Kiwis when they got to big and had to move them. I just wish I had left them in the ground where they where but was getting to many complaints, You have to be really carefull when moving these guys. I wish I had found your video before I moved them several years ago where you mention about the roots easily damaged, But anyways I think you have done a top notch job raising them from such tiny seeds, Keep the good work up.
Watching your kiwi experiment is definitely my favorite, kiwi's are what first brought me here a couple years ago (or i guess a little less than that as this is the two year update). I envy your warm weather and long growing season.
When we look through your cool gate between your front and back yards, I see all that grass out front and think "Wow, more space for trees". I think you could convert your front yard into the same secluded growing space, with hedges, trees, and plants. In my neighbourhood in Vancouver, BC, many people have converted their front yards to grape trellises, potato and kale crops, or other things. Often these home owners are Vietnamese, Portuguese dudes, or Italians, but not always. We think grass and heavily fertilized lawns are normal, but they're a pretty recent thing from a historical view. You could have so much more gardening space! haha
I have watched your series from the beginning. Very informative. Disappointed in finding out that Kiwis were vines instead of trees. Have no room for vines.
Call me crazy but my kiwi vines I got from McClendon are flowering second year one male one female I just walk out side yesterday morning to find some flowers although not very many but next year I hope to see much more
Vines are looking good. Have you considered grafting one or two and short circuit the time needed to become reproductive? You may be able to ensure both male and female. Once the vines get really established, you'll find they are rampant. My previous property had a couple and they would put out very strong canes metres long, that didn't twine. Ideal for training. They say bees don't really find the flowers attractive, but mine always seemed to pollinate well. Always found they have a very short dormancy, right around the shortest day. They bleed profusely for months if pruned too late. Another observation is cats seem to love Kiwis. Mine were always covered in cat fur, where they rubbed themselves all over and scratched up the roots.
How close are you planting them? I was given cuttings I've gotten rooted..so planting them out and would like to know how close? I have 1 male and 5 females so far that have gotten nice roots!
Debbie Burke You should plant them about 4-5 feet apart. Mine are only a foot apart because of space constraints and I am waiting to see what sex they will become to determine who stays and who goes.
Can I grow kiwi in Phoenix AZ?? 🤔🤔🤔🤔 I'm curious....or if there's a specific type that could grow out here....that would be sweet... anyways I feel your passion bro...props!👏👏👏👏
Need to ask something, that I have kiwi plant at home it's almost 1 year old germinate from seed . Is their any difference in leave to identify Male kiwi and Female kiwi . If , yes please share it how it look different.
Rob Backyard Gardenerr It’ll be interesting to see. I’ve ripped so many of these out, but eventually I’ll be trained (ha) how to graft onto them. Although it will be gold (g3) rather than green.
I really want to see what fruit you end up with cuz kiwis are like apples and lemons. You gotta get cuttings or a plant that has been grown in a nursery because with seed they tend to grow a different variation of the fruit, so it's not the exact same fruit.
I know but that’s what’s so exciting about it! It could be something awesome, or it could be something inedible. So, to quote Owen Wilson from Armageddon - it’s like 98% exciting and 2% scary or maybe it’s more like 98% scary and 2% exciting. LOL
Hi I was wondering where are you located? I’m from Canada and we have the cold winters so I am wondering if it’s worth for me to start or even try growing kiwis?
Mine seem to be just fine with a freeze and extended days in the '20's, but I'd always check to see what varieties grow best in your zone. Perhaps because mine are grown from seed they are better adapted to my climate.
I think there are certain kinds were you don’t need to have two plants... I guess they’re hermaphroditic or whatever but I’m not sure I just heard that from another channel they were going somewhere they didn’t have to worry about that
waiting for the next apples from seed update!!!
Just an update everyone. Hope you're enjoying the series.

We bought a pot with two plants in it guarenteed to be male and female 2 years ago. Time will tell.
Best wishes Bob. 🌴🌴
I'll likely end up doing that as well Bob - just to ensure we get fruit! Thanks for stopping by and it's great to see you again!
Rob Backyard Gardenerr just wanted to know why you need both the male and female plant? Just curious...
Richenol Cadet kiwis cannot self pollinate and only produce either female or male flowers.
BobMels Gardens these plants are not ganja plants..their flowers have both sex organs
Did they fruit?
Thanks for the update!!!
Amazing video as always!!! You definitely do have a green thumb for gardening
Thank you Ernesto - I wish I had more space so I could actually set these up the correct way!
Rob Backyard Gardenerr I have really learned alot from your videos!!
Call me crazy but my kiwi vines I got from McClendon are flowering second year one male one female I just walk out side yesterday morning to find some flowers although not very many but next year I hope to see much more
That's still cool to get some flowers so soon! I hope they turn to fruit for you Dominick!
they are beautiful colours and hardy ,thanks for showing how easy it is to achieve growing them, did you grow your grape vines with seeds well
Not the grape vines. Thank you for watching!
Love the water fall
Nice visual reference to your channel name at the beginning of the video!
Thank you!
Home Depot sells the treated wood frame for vines to grow on to so they have some support when the flower or fruit
Gonietube NYC Thanks for the tip!
Those little tiny seeds turned into that! Wow!! BTW is that your pool? It is REALLY nice!
Keanu Widjaja Yes and Yes! Thank you!
I love your videos! Keep up the good work!
Wow!!! so cool and Amazing
very good job mate they are beautiful :)
Rob, you are awesome. I've watched your apple seedlings grow and now your kiwi. What happened with the indoor cuttings?
Charlotte K Thank you so much! most of them (cuttings) didn’t make it...for several reasons. I will try again when I have space for them!
I hope my kiwi plants take off like your kiwi plants 😊 I ordered a male plant just to make sure I had at least one amongst my bunch. 😅

I have - I may do this next spring. I love hearing about your kiwis. I can't wait until mine flower (assuming they do).
Hi Rob!
Are you planning on making videos about growing grape from seed anytime soon?
I've thought about it Arif. I just need more space to really get into more vining plants.
How close are you planting them? I was given cuttings I've gotten rooted..so planting them out and would like to know how close? I have 1 male and 5 females so far that have gotten nice roots!

Can I grow kiwi in an open garden in the U.K.. I have one plant in the tub. When fruit will come.Im so curious about it.
I’ve always wanted to know this, but if seeds grow in very close proximity, will the sprouts merge?
Is this area has winter season.is it essencial to grow well
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THE PLANT IS MALE OR FEMALE . IS THERE A WAY TO DIFFERENTIATE THEM ? THKS
Hey , congrats for this . I bought self pollination kiwi seeds online . Are self pollinating kiwi 🥝 really exists?
RAM KUMAR they do. Is it an Issai Hardy kiwi?
Rob Backyard Gardenerr it’s a red kiwi vine seeds
This is great
this is so cool!
So are you going to graft Hayward onto these plants? From what I can see, you’re growing the Bruno rootstock.
Julia Archer I think it’s likely a Bruno-Hayward cross as well. I’m thinking about grafting a few for sure.
Rob Backyard Gardenerr It’ll be interesting to see. I’ve ripped so many of these out, but eventually I’ll be trained (ha) how to graft onto them. Although it will be gold (g3) rather than green.
Awesome
But when the plant starts making kiwis, the kiwis keeps growing in it right? You don't have to wait 4-7 years everytime?
ChubbyTae they would probably be really expensive if that was the case.
Kiwi jello shots lol... good job wait whattt 7 years oh no nevermind for the jello shot j/k
LOL - Jello Shots in 2025!
Lol I’ll be 47 but time they come threw my drinking days might be over lol

Help!!!!!! My seedlings keep dying. What can I do for successful growth
Hi I was wondering where are you located? I’m from Canada and we have the cold winters so I am wondering if it’s worth for me to start or even try growing kiwis?
Try a cold hardy species!
Would kiwi plants survive winter in zone 7-8 ?
Mine seem to be just fine with a freeze and extended days in the '20's, but I'd always check to see what varieties grow best in your zone. Perhaps because mine are grown from seed they are better adapted to my climate.
And here I was excited to grow kiwi 😩 it’s too much work and take years to produce fruits.
What kiwi variety are you growing here?

You need to find some graft wood if you want any good tasting fruit
Wait....5-7 Years?!
They will grow thicker so you need gazebo or trellis.
You could maybe propagate males and sell them ha with females as a bundle in the community
Oh lord there go me not growing if it take 5-7years to grow man..
I thought it was John Travolta
Yo wait what- kiwis have g e n d e r s ?
