One of my best friends died from a stroke last Thursday - he was only 61 and was a pillar of our Blacksmith club. I heckled him countless times that I don't forge decorative, ornate things - only tools and hardware...Andy did both and was extraordinary at absolutely everything he did...and he finally got me to forge a rose. I'll be starting on this project tomorrow. Several members of the club are forging roses or leaves for a bouquet for Andy's widowed wife. Rest in peace my friend!
Thanks for the video John. I have a large speaker magnet on the side of my anvil that I bring up to the top and it helps to "stick" small pieces to the anvil and makes for less chasing.
A rose by any other name is still a rose. Many have done it both ways. Your work is very nice indeed. In the form of " from a single bar" i could see that taking upwards of 10-12 hours. At a shop hourly rate of $80-$100 per hourthat would make a thousand dollar rose pretty easy. Betting selling one for that would be quite hard to do. This way works well too, though its less ornate in one veiw point its stil beautiful and the cost ratio would make it much easier to sell. Probly market price $50-$60. Still $700 @ dozen but they never wilt n die. Love your work. Blessed days 2 u sirSir, Crawford out
@@BlackBearForge oh wow i didnt know. No offense Mr. John. Thats an awesome piece for sure...welk worth that figure too. Thank you for letting me know. Your really great sir. Blessings upon u sir, Crawford out
17:35 "Yes. I've done that" Funny 18:10 Thank you for showing that shot. It really makes clear your camera set up. 19:40 "You just chase it around the anvil." Funny and factual. (We have all done it.)
When you started I thought that this was going to be boring, but boy was I wrong. This is fascinating I can't wait until you post the next video. Thanks so much for sharing.
Awesome video bud. I know I said this in the past but I have to make a bunch of roses for my daughters wedding I have watched many videos from other Smith’s but I was waiting for your video. I’m glade i waited for yours John. I picked up a few new technics from you thank you.... you da man. Lol. Thx for sharing....Paul...
I've made some ugly roses from 1" round bar, was thinking of trying flat bar. Maybe I should try this way first to build my skill. Nice work. I'm re watching this
“This is just art at this point.” Uhhh, my friend, EVERYTHING you do is art! Of course a barn door hinge is a bit more functional art than a steel rose, but still art none the less.
Arlene I'm right there with you. However I am no rose fan, much prefer wild flowers. Now I'd love to see a few of them forged like this. While I am not a blacksmith either, these videos are strangely mesmerizing and addictive.
I'm sorry but my leaves are not like a typical leaf... that is the nice thing about organic.... let your imagination make what you want it to look like.... I forge my leaves from 1/2" round... I do have a jig that I made to make the leaves look real... I do like the square punch idea... I will use that in the future for sure.... lovely video tho... thank you!
Blacksmith's elbow. Basically, tennis elbow and don't forget carpal tunnel. You want to use a hammer that isn't too heavy and the way you grip the hammer is important too. John did a video on it.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Forged roses are an excellent way to honor a friend.
@@BlackBearForge indeed, it's a bit of a tradition as I've observed over the past few years in this club. Thank you very much for the demonstration!
I'm more comfortable tackling a project involving sheet metal work than I was before I discovered your UA-cam channel, Thanks!

good idea

A rose this size actually sells for $150

I've made a few flowers from the Kens custom iron blanks. Came out great.

140 bucks later and I got 5 new tongs, some sleighs and roses for the kids to make! Wow what a deal!
Good morning Great video thank you for your time and hard work God bless📖⛪
I made like a hundred of those at scout camp
Happy turkey day! If I ever get around to hacking up a forklift tine, who knows, I may end up selling hammer blanks.
Nice John!
Thank you for the metric conversion

Nice job my friend I just made a 🌹 your way is also a good way ⚒️👍⚒️pat
It's looking good so far man. Thank you for the video.
you should do a wideo how to make a rose as you told from thick mettal bar
I am actually hoping to do that for February tight before Valentines day.
Great tutorial! Thanks for listing the resources too!
Great video John looking forward to part!
When using a chisel, I always use a sacrificial plate on my anvil!!!!!!🇨🇦
When cutting through i always use a plate. If I'm not going to cut through into the anvil, I generally don't worry about it.
Good stuff John, have started one of these a few months ago and haven't got back to it yet, must finish it.
Have you ever used the off center veining spring swages or any of they're spring swages?? How do you like them??
Nice demo John. Hope that's a thornless variety. Jump welding those thorns could get frustrating if not impossible, lol. 🐾🔥⚒🌹
If forge welding, I would raise the thorn by cutting with a chisel

Still would love to help you make this the traditional way.
That would be a fun project. Perhaps later in the spring
Beautiful, I’m a 66 yo woman, I could do this!
Yes. You could. I bet there is a smithy near you, and someone willing to give classes.
There is no reason not to. Forge work isn't an exclusively male past time.

What was the thickness sheet used for the leaves? I didn't catch any place in the video where you mentioned
Probably 22 gauge. But its been a long time since I sent the specs in tot he laser cutter.
That “technical” term is peduncle. Lol. My college botany class popped into my head.
Thats one I'll probably forget

How do you find the FA apron? Worth the outlay?
It has been a good apron and so far shows no sign of wear
Nice work. Does all the hammering involved with blacksmithing have orthopedic consequences?

I guess it was a long lunch. 🤣😁👍🖖

Power wire brush or steel wool with oil.
