    The only effective ingredient in that mix comes from the orange oil and it's called D-Limonene (Limonene). If you only use D-Limonene, your pesticide will be more effective than adding soap and oil to it. D-Limonene is derived from a number of different citrus fruits including Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Mandarins, and Grapefruit and it breaks down the protective coating on an insect's exoskeleton. 2 ounces per gallon of water is enough and if you use a watering can with a sprinkler head or simply pour it from a bucket, ensure you get enough to soak the ground deep enough to get the queen. It should only require one application and the next day they should all be dead. There is no need to disturb the mound, simply soak it thoroughly, including around the mound to ensure they don't get away.

      Is it safe to spray in a chicken run? I'm assuming the chickens will eat the dead ants.

    • @abmrose
      @abmrose Рік тому +2

      The soap emulsifies the oil in the water, so it stays evenly dispersed during application.
      Spreading the mound and spraying will allow someone to use a lot less solution per mound if they’re being conservative to help it last longer.
      Thanks for the watering can idea, I really like that.

    Thank you very much for this video! I've had ant problems for some time, and they seem difficult to get rid of or to kill, with typical toxic chemicals. After spraying Ortho chemicals on their hills, I've noticed a reduction in their activity, but queens will still climb out and fly away. This helps!

      OAG, I have a question about strawberries. I bought a strawberry plant that looked promising with nice blooms on it. Well, i got about 4 small strawberries but now the plant keeps vineing off. I am on the 3rd branch off plant from this plant. So, i now have 4 strawberry plants and only 4 small strawberries. What can i do to get more strawberries and less vines?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 років тому +1

      Janice, a lot has to do with the variety of strawberry you are growing and the manner you are growing them. Ever bearing strawberries will produce more than one crop during the growing season, whereas June bearing strawberries usually only produce one crop. And if you are growing them in pots or containers that affects the plant. But they all produce runners (what you are calling veining). You can root the runners and make more strawberry plants for next year. Thanks for stopping by.
      OAG

    • @MsJaniceBell
      @MsJaniceBell 7 років тому

      These are ever bearing OAG. I am growing them in pots as we own our trailer but not the land. I am hesitate to plant anything as they sometimes run over plants with the mowers. These strawberries seem to make more runners than berries. LOL. Maybe next year they will produce more berries. Another question about the strawberries. Should i leave them outside this winter or bring them in since they are in pots?

    Hi from northern Texas!! We have quite a bad issue with fire ants here and I am so glad to see you post such a great and non poisonous method of getting rid of them. I wonder if regular mineral oil would work as well as the baby oil, as I have read that most brands are just scented mineral oil. Thank you for taking time to share all your wisdom with those of us who didn't have someone in our lives to personally hand it down. Keep up the great work!!! Oh, one more question I though of. Is there a practical way to put this formula into a hose end sprayer and still be assured of the proper strength to do the job?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 років тому

      Yes, regular mineral will work also, the oil just helps the other parts stick to the ant's body better. I understand your question about hose end sprayer, and I haven't tried it so I don't have any experience with applying it that way. This will take repeated applications to completely kill a mound. Thanks for stopping by.

      Ants and aphids work together. The aphids secrete a milk like fluid which the ants use for food, and in return the ants protect the aphids. Both ants and aphids are harmful for your garden. Thanks for stopping by.

    • @johnlord8337

      Aphids are the cows eating the vegs. They poo out the sugar secretion that the ants stroke them for and eat. Ants then provide protection. Ladybug tiger larvae eat up aphids, and mature lady bugs as well. Remove aphids and then there should be no ant problems as well.

      Hello Martha and welcome to my channel. I feel that this is a "contact" ant killer so I think if you got it on the in the house ants it would kill them. But, it would be almost impossible to kill the queen ant that way. What I suggest for in the house ants is to buy a box of borax (20 Mule Team Borax) and mix it equal part borax and powdered sugar, then place it in something like a jar lid in the area where the ants crawl around. They will be attracted to the powdered sugar and carry it back to the nest where when eaten the borax will kill them including the queen. You might try this and see how it works. Sue, I don't have any experience with this spray in a raised bed. Think about the ingredients: There is probably nothing in it that will hurt your plants. You might try it on a small spot and see what happens.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  6 років тому +2

      Sue, are you in an area where it stays dry? You might try using DE (Google DE) to kill the ants in your raised bed. And you can use water, force the hose end (with the water running) right in the middle of the ant mound, push it down until you see all the little white eggs flushing out, scatter the eggs and any ants that come out with it, flush all the eggs out. This doesn't kill the ants, or at least most of them, but it will make them move out of your raised bed to another location, hopefully out of your garden where you can apply a poison and kill them.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener

      My guess is that because it wilts in the hot months, it is getting dry. If that is correct, then the best thing to do for it is mulch and lots of it. You could even dig down as deep as you want to around the plant and fill the hole with peat moss or mulch, anything to help hold water.

      The challenge in trying to kill fire ants is to get/kill the queen. To do that you have to make a hole down the center of the mound so you can get whatever you are applying down in the mound. Just spraying something on top of the mound won't kill the queen and the mound will just keep growing.

      They are fire ants, they do not eat the crops, but they are very aggressive & their bite/sting hurts pretty good, hence the name "Fire" ants..bc their bite feels like fire. And they are quite common in the southern portion on the United States. So if they built a nest in your garden bed...whatever you had planted there, you probably would not mess with bc of the ants.

      Anders Holmstrom In their natural habitat, which is Africa, there are natural predators for the ants, but in north American the ants are not native so there are no natural predators and the fire ants have become a major problem, especially to children. My experience has been the darn ants just move a bit and make a new mound. Do you have that? I bought an expensive deant product that had a growth regulator that killed and made the ants so they could not make new queens. If you kill them off, the survivors just make new queens and they move on. This product worked for a year but this year they are back. I hate Fire Ants! I am going to try this for sure!!!!

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 років тому +1

      Yes, sometime they just move, but if I can get them to move out of my garden growing area, I will use Amdro on them and it will kill the mound. Amdro is a poison so I don't use it on mounds in my garden area, but out side the garden, Amdro works. One point on Amdro, don't disturb the mound or they will move., just sprinkle Amdro on top of the mound and leave it alone.

    • @sqwrrl
      @sqwrrl 7 років тому

      OldAlabamaGardener The logic is problematic but I found this:-
      The grits need to stay dry, so that after the ants eat them, the grits will expand in the ants stomach’s and kill them. Do not dampen or wet the instant grits before or after the application.
      Grits will not kill ants on contact. They work best if given 24 to 48 hours of exposure, this is because grits are not toxic or poisonous and they need time to expand inside the ant. You should see results beginning within the first twenty-four hours and within forty-eight hours the ant colony should be completely destroyed.
      Warning
      Avoid the use of instant grits around ducks and geese. Ducks and geese cannot release the gases created by the grits and the grits can also expand inside their stomach just like the ants and cause death.

    And here is a tip for those who are unfortunate enough to get fire ants in the house..... I have found that a half and half solution of Dr. Bronner's peppermint castile soap with water in a spray bottle works wonders for driving the little buggers right out of the house!!! I don't know if anyone else makes the peppermint castile soap with the same ingr's and strength as the Dr. B's, but the ants certainly aren't brand conscious, so use whatever comes to hand if you can't find this brand, as long as the formula is pretty close. If you have a health food store anywhere near they should have it, or online on Amazon.

      OldAlabamaGardener just sprinkle it dry close to main entrance. 2 to 4 packets per nest. Repeat about 5 - 7 days until no life is seen when disturbing nest. Kills queen. Safe on all other life forms including pets & kids

      @@johnsullivan7628 Sounds interesting. I will get some and try it. Make me wonder what it does to us if we consume it.

    All you need is a shovel! shovel the top of one ant hill and place it on top of another one and they will fight to the death! It works! They hate each other and will fight to the very last one standing.
