I am also very pleased with the TDK AR 90.
As a cassette deck I use a Yamaha KX580 Special Edition that records very nicely and plays back fantastically.
I achieve the best result by using the automatic tuning, called Auto tape tuning and then outputting it with 0dB, peaks at a maximum of +2dB. Despite the calibration, the meters with playback will show +4dB~+6dB. The KX580SE uses DIN 250 nWb/m meters. On old decks that should be +8dB~+10dB and the heads of such old decks have trouble with these hard levels.
I have personally found that cassette decks suitable for the harder metal tape levels are less likely to be distorted with these TDK AR tapes than with machines that are not suitable for metal. The heads can handle harder levels more easily and with cassette, harder levels mean a better signal-to-noise ratio. The bias is the same with modern decks as with older decks, that's not the difference. AR is also recognized as Normal on modern decks, the difference is purely in better heads. After all, you need good heads to get a good sound from metal tape, so this high-end cassette is ideally suited for the better decks. This despite the Normal tape position, it's about the harder levels, that's where the power of this tape lies.
The sound with Dolby S is as good on TDK AR as that of a HiFi Stereo VHS video recorder, which means that these are very good cassettes 🙂

Maybe the switch has not been put on correctly and that’s why u have to set it lower try take the button off and put the switch to the bottom and then put switch back on then might fix it

Yeah, after several recordings, it seemed to fix itself
I guess it was the rec/play switch
