Did the overland a year back. We hiked fast on a fly in and out trip. 2.5 days of walking. What a place! Planning to get back there soon. Water is good but we filtered as a precaution. Grab some hooks for the tent platforms cos you’ll need them. Watch out for tiger snakes we saw 2 on our walk. Enjoy AUS mate! Can’t wait to see the video!
Great to hear you are coming to the Land Down Under. You will really enjoy the Overland Track. Prepare for camping on tent platforms, and look out for the Drop Bears!!
If you snore buy a "rip snore" over the counter anti-snore they work or see your dentist and get a custom one made. No more snoring, better for you and others. I use one :)
Hey Redbeard, thanks for gear breakdown... just wondering about your choice of shirt and teeshirt you'll be wearing, are they a cotton synthetic blend? Not a big fan of poly myself, except for it's drying properties... thanks
Tasmania is amazing. Make sure you see the little blue penguins coming ashore at night on the East Coast, Bicheno is a good spot but will be all up the coast. Check out Freycinet Peninsula, gorgeous place. Tassie is a marvellous place to see Australian wildlife, enjoy!
Hi Will! I live in the North of Tasmania. Let me know if I can help you out in anyway. Hope you have a fantastic walk! You are correct - the weather can be unpredictable and very changeable! My husband is doing the Overland Track Run next Saturday the 3rd of Feb. They run the 82km in a day, once a year. So that is what is going on if you are on trail and see a bunch of crazy runners pass through!
I've had solid experiences with treated down. Untreated can't handle any wet, but treated down (I use Mountain Hardware) will keep it's loft and insulate until it's almost waterlogged, which mine never gets because I put on a rain shell long before that happens.
Be sure to pick up a power adapter. A quick check shows they use that weird unamerican 230 voltages down under. Can't wait for you videos. I had to go look up this trail to find out more about it. Looks awesome!
After hiking with Benny for so long, I always have my ear plugs... had it out our FT hike too! Still heard everyone though! LOL... +1 to a scoop cup! If you ever need it once, you will never go without it again! Love my Anker battery packs too! Highly recommend them! Another +1 to the GooseFeet Gear down socks, even over thicker "sleeping socks" I have some of the ExO's too, but prefer UA instead. Haha, that pillow! I liked the look of that one better than the rest of them! Love my Gatorade bottles too... I go for the 20 oz bottles though! +1 for the Sawyer Mini. My favorite filter, hands down. I'll be using mine on the JMT later this year too! Was interesting seeing that tent on our FT hike. Love watching the Zpacks tent line up evolve. I gotta say too, I much prefer an actual tent floor as opposed to the mesh tent floors. Like the taller entry way on that too compared to my Hexamid (tarp). Bummer you can't carry your drone... would have been some awesome shots... Anyway, have fun man!
Check out the Zpacks Hexamid tent's. They use mesh floors, and then you layer another floor (cuben, tyvek, polycro, etc...) inside it. The Plex line of tents use a cuben floor.
That tent looks awesome! I just ordered a duplex cause of the lack of space in the solplex. This tent at first sight exactly what I was looking for. Looking forward to a review! Safe trails!
That same Anker 20k is my EDC backup battery. Love it. It charges so fast with the dual in ports. Don't need a 20k on trail, so the 10k goes with me on the trail, but that one is super if you need 20k.
Have fun in Tassie! Definitely try to get to Pine Valley if you can, and specifically The Acropolis, it's a great sidetrip. Doubt you'll need the warmth of down socks and a hood, but you never know. Looks like that tent could be a bit of a pain to setup on the platforms, but I'm sure you guys will figure it out. Otherwise, looking forward to the video of the trip! Would have asked you guys out for a drink in Hobart, but am in Argentina at the moment (so sad, I know). Enjoy :)
Great vid Will, and welcome to our shores. :) Just watch out with your 20,000+ mAh battery charger over here. If you have it on board as cabin luggage you'll likely have it confiscated. 10,000 is the acceptable limit. If it's in the hold, I guess you'll be fine! Looking forward to your trail report. :)
Hey Will! Looking forward to your overland track vlogs. Little jealous lol. If you do bring your stove I recommend you get all the Back Country Cuisine you can get your hands on! I haven’t had one I didn’t like yet. Enjoy!
Looks like the 3F UL Gear Lanshan 1 but that is 750g for a double wall silnylon, actually it looks more the 3F UL 1P single wall, but those are 650g and only 80.00!
Nice tent, as long as I can place my backpack inside the tent with an ample of space to wiggle and I believe that tent would be less than a pound in weight, it would be the sickest Zpacks solo tent.
Hey man have fun dude your living it now.. Keep up the good work. Would love to see Z packs make a tarp for a Hobie Adventure Island tandem kayak. For trampoline camping at anchor.
Dude, watching the video now. Hope y'all have a great time. Maybe one day I will be able to join y'all on one of these epic hikes! Be safe and happy hiking! :)
Was considering purchasing the Duplex, but want to wait to see when this prototype actually goes to production and for sale. I look forward to updates.
Yes, the Hexamid Duplex looks very promising from the prototype pics online...exactly what I am looking for, actually. I'm hoping it's available this spring sometime.
I found this very useful and am interested in some of the clothing items. I am in the uk. So I have put some items in the cart to get a shipping cost. I will incur a UK import tax through. How often do you issue any discount vouchers. Interested in the jacket and trousers also
Hey Will, great video as usual. The prototype tent looks a lot like the Altaplex, which I love. And it looks like Joe solved the issue of having to use a trekking pole extension to pitch it. However it turns out, I'm sure it will be a typical Zpacks hit. Water scoop - the cheaper water bottles with the thinner plastic will collapse flat when not in use for space savings. Or you could use a freezer type plastic baggie that will get you into any type of water scooping predicament. Curious, with zpacks pack ability to resist water, why you just don't use a pack liner instead of all the individual bags? Peace of mind? Organization? Personal preference? Always willing to learn something new here. Have a great trip.
Thanks for the info on the scoop cup. I just like organizing with small dry bags. My sleeping bag already comes with one and I only need 1 additional for clothing. I’ve just never been a fan of pack liners. 👍
Hope you enjoy your time here, just a couple of suggestions. Someone take a PBL and where are the snake bite bandages, our snakes have a different toxin and treatment than most USA snakes. Summer here and the tigers are out in force on the overland. (tiger snakes)
Are they aggressive? I will definitely keep my eyes on the trail like i did on the Pacific Crest Trail with all the rattlesnakes. Are snakes essentially the only things to watch out for in Tasmania? I imagine spiders too?
They can be but usually will move out of your way. Early morning before they get warmed up that may not happen and watch stepping over logs, nearly got bit by a highland copperhead in the alpine region whilst doing that. Spiders aren't a problem except for the fact you may walk into their web if you silk blaze and I hate the feel of them crawling on my face. Here is the accepted treatment for Aussie snakes. stjohn.org.au/assets/uploads/fact%20sheets/english/FS_snakebite.pdf
Looks like newer version of Altaplex? I’m in the market over the next few months to purchase. Was going to get the Altaplex, any idea when this tent might be available?
Hey, Will! My wife and sister and I were with you and Benny at campsite 29 on the Maddron Bald trail this last week and just wanted to say hi and ask a quick question! Have you had any issues with the O-ring falling out of your Sawyer squeeze filter? My wife and I are currently using a Katadyn Hiker Pro pump filter and are wanting to use a more ultralight option but I noticed that piece falling out was an issue with my sisters Sawyer Squeeze (not the mini).
Andrew Pearson hey hows it going? Great meeting you guys the other day. I have never used the full-size Sawyer, I’ve used the mini a lot and never had a problem. But today I would really recommend the Be Free filter. It is super light and easy to use and has the best flow right on the market. Hard to beat! Hope this helps. ✌️
It's really difficult to balance touting the great benefits of a new design without being able to give the specs isn't it? lol. You want to give more info so badly because your'e excited but don't want to steal the thunder of the launch. Great job and good luck on the Overland.
It has been updated. However it appears that Anker is currently producing the exact model that i showed in the video. I provided a link in my description of one that is close to the model in my video.
New info here: including sub-15oz prototypes, .51, design tweaks, and more. www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/8brhna/email_from_zpacks_re_new_tent_prototype/
With your wipes, take them all out of the container and let them dry out. Then place them into a ziplock bag and hydrate one at a time as you need them. This will save on your weight.
Will...with the stoves you have used I am surprised that the lightest of them all---and the one that I have been using for the last year---has never made an appearance in your pack or videos! The stove is the typical propane/butane type that uses any traditional canister but the stove itself weighs only 25 grams!!! ... Thats .9 of an ounce. And believe it or not, it works fantastically. After a year of use I have yet to have a single issue with it. The beauty of it all is that you can pick them up for about 10.00 from China (then wait 2-4 weeks for it to arrive) or , at this moment, you can pick one up on Amazon for 14.99 with free delivery if youre a prime member. The only downside is that they are somewhat small so you do need to make sure your pot sits squarely on the legs but other than that they just rock!!! Try one out sometime.
Yeah, just be careful with it. Don't over tighten it or drop it when it's attached to the canister, or bang in against anything. That single flange puts uneven stress on the canister valve. Poor design from a safety standpoint, but shouldn't be an issue as long as you treat it delicately.
Very easy but awesome beautiful hike, done it x3 so far, enjoy some of the side trips like Barn Bluff, Mt Pelion East etc............yeah don't need a filter, water is 100% ok, also don't not use wet toilet wipes they are not allowed in the composting toilets as its a World Heritage area, so only normal TP, 1-1.5L water is more than enough........................the new tent looks great, could be keen to buy once you hit production...........be cool if you can add updates or hike report to the Overland Track Facebook Group page facebook.com/groups/2042563289352427/
Hey Will, just curious as to why you always claim to have an "Ultra Light" load out when that is considered a base weight under 10 pounds. You claimed the same thing on the AT and PCT gear lists when your PCT base was 12.9 pounds. There is no official rules obviously but if your going to make instructional videos it is misleading to tell people that 12.9 pounds is "Ultra Light." I understand the appeal of throwing the "Ultra" in the title to gain more views but it's pretty annoying since I've never seen a 10 pound base from you. I do enjoy your content and have been following you since the AT. Just something I noticed.
@ sometimes What would he call it then at that weight (what title)? I'm not a super lightweight guy, my base weight is about 18lb,.. I don't know what my official title wound be, I always say I'm a lightweight backpacker,.and compared to some of my friends I am. Perhaps I am wrong to say. Also, his video says "ultralight gear", he has some of the lightest as far as the big 3, so he for sure has ultralight gear? Really asking honestly, I'm not part of the super light, so I don't know the official naming, not looking to offend anyone just get a better understand. Thanks
Hey, thanks for the reply. Technically no official standards exist it's just a way to classify a certain load out. The term light weight commonly refers to a base weight from 10-20 pounds. The term ultra light refers to base weights of 10 pounds and under. You are right to say you're a lightweight backpacker because your base weight falls withing those weights. I agree that he has lots of "ultra light" items but as a whole his base falls outside the marker. The way he titles the video saying "ultra light gear setup" I think he is trying to say his set up as a whole is ultra light. It really is not a big deal it's just kind of annoying that Will uses the "ultra light" term to draw backpackers to his videos when in reality his set up falls outside the ultra light weight markers. Thanks for the question!
Interesting tent. It'd be a no go for the overland track these days. They insist on 2 layer tents and check before you go. Hope you enjoyed Tassie
I've seen single walled tents on the track. I've walked it twice (recently), and haven't had my gear checked either time.
Awesome to see you come to Australia. Tassie is a great place. Lots to explore. Looking forward to your trip video!
Sounds like another epic adventure. Happy Trails!!! Sweet looking tent!
I really like native sunglasses! My grandfather actually turned me on to these and their great!
Just got back from the overland track. You don't need the filter. Obviously the rain water tanks could be variable, but the creeks are pristine.
Thanks for the info! Gear update time. ✌️
Did the overland a year back. We hiked fast on a fly in and out trip. 2.5 days of walking. What a place! Planning to get back there soon. Water is good but we filtered as a precaution. Oh also possums. If you wake up during the night don’t be too surprised when you see on asleep on top of your pack in the vestibule 😃
Sleeping???? Or ransacking your gear looking for snacks? ;-)
Carla Best legit sleeping! Scared the crap out of me. 😂🤣 wombats tried all the other hikers tents tho and put holes in a few on them.
The new tent looks like what I have been waiting for!
I think you guys are going to love this trek. Welcome to Australia 😊
That's the tent I've been waiting for. The perfect sub 1 pound shelter. The Altaplex was just too tall. Thanks Will.
That tent looks nice!
That tent looks great!
Good luck on the Overland mate, hope no more gear issues.
Great to hear you are coming to the Land Down Under. You will really enjoy the Overland Track. Prepare for camping on tent platforms, and look out for the Drop Bears!!
Oh sweet . Good to see you in Australia 💖

I enjoyed your video Will. Hope you are having a great trip.
how did you go pitching that tent on the platforms?
Liking the new tent design. If you don't put it in production I'll take the prototype.
Enjoy the bushwalk Will. Just remember you will be pitching tent on platforms so remember to take screw in hooks.
Great video, like the overview of the new tent.
New tent looks awesome. Happy trails on ya'lls trip.

Have a great trip down under, hope all well with you. Also hope that one day you might do some more AT or PCT videos, classic Red Beard.
What is the difference between bushcrafting and hiking
This trip will be awesome! I have watched a few hiking videos from Australia.
Tent looks great, I have a triplex and would love a vent on the very top of the tent. Just copy Locus gear design. Good luck on your hike
Looks great. Love the tent
any updated thoughts on the new prototype tent you used ? when will it be available to buy ?
Great gear break down Thanks brother !
I found this very useful and am interested in some of the clothing items. I am in the uk. So I have put some items in the cart to get a shipping cost. I will incur a UK import tax through. How often do you issue any discount vouchers. Interested in the jacket and trousers also
Any updates on the PROTOTYPE Zpacks Tent? Thx
Nice tent. Q: with the trekking pole tents does the pole need to be a certain height? If so i get a trekking pole 'spacer' if needed?
Nice job on the video!
Damn, Will...what happened to you?!?..You were my favorite of all the UA-camrs on here!!!..Definitely miss your videos here in Florida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Will, not sure if you guys have seen the forecast but it is supposed to snow..... 🤷🏻♀️
It's really difficult to balance touting the great benefits of a new design without being able to give the specs isn't it? lol. You want to give more info so badly because your'e excited but don't want to steal the thunder of the launch. Great job and good luck on the Overland.

Will Wood thank you! I’m looking for new boots now. Looking forward to spring.
I really like the look of that tent but I think if I'm going to drop a bunch of cash I'll want a freestanding tent even if it's a bit heavier.
Wish there was just a slightly narrower Duplex (with 2 doors).
So do I. In fact Matt from Zpacks made one. Maybe we will release it one day!
I like the look of that tent... Even better if it was 2 person
that's the Duplex, awesome 2p tent
think it will be released before the next thru hiking season? i could see myself getting this for the PCT this summer ;-)
Most definitely. Should be released within a month or two.
Price point ?
That would make me very happy!
Not sure on the price at the moment.
any hints on weight ?
Awesome videos I can't wait to sit down and watch the rest. Whats in my pack bourbon... :-)

With your wipes, take them all out of the container and let them dry out. Then place them into a ziplock bag and hydrate one at a time as you need them. This will save on your weight.
Lee T That's what I do too 👍
Don’t forget your bear canister and look up for drop bears...
You should send me a prototype jacket to help speed up the testing! :)
Will...with the stoves you have used I am surprised that the lightest of them all---and the one that I have been using for the last year---has never made an appearance in your pack or videos! yup the BRS-3000T, awesome cooker, dont need anything else
Yeah, just be careful with it. Don't over tighten it or drop it when it's attached to the canister, or bang in against anything. That single flange puts uneven stress on the canister valve. Poor design from a safety standpoint, but shouldn't be an issue as long as you treat it delicately.
I'm coming with you, don't know how ,but coming with you....
obviously
You might like to pick up some some extra cord for the tent platforms and sunscreen. www.gocampingaustralia.com/waterfall-valley-to-windermere.html
Ha ha, "the cut off the shit"
you forgot to link the sunglasses
oops, thanks for letting me know. have them linked now.
I love ZPacks and I’m not knocking....buuuut....are you guys ready for the most expensive tent on the market.? 😜
How will you prepare for the overwhelming packs of werewolves?
Silver Bullets of course. After I chug each coors light, i will save the can just in case.
Will Wood 🐺 I knew you’d have a solution. Thanks!🤣

Will wood check out nitecore’s new head lamp.
NU25
Mine weighs 36g
Look it up, most people I have showed this to buy one, it’s perfect really.
send me a tent I will test one for you, ya I know- just joking- have a safe trip
Too bad about the two commercial interruptions. Like watching TV.
Hiking doesn't pay much. UA-cam ads help me feed my family.
Wayne Campbell i
What commercials? Get an AdBlock extention. They've been around for at least a decade.
Less talk, more demo please. The tent is nice but I'll take the Tarptent Notch Lithium.
That’s unfortunate but have fun with the second rate tent I’ll stick with the best. Cheers
Not very environment-friendly to use these kind of diposable toothbrushs.
toothpaste waste of space

The term ultra light refers to base weights of 10 pounds and under. You are right to say you're a lightweight backpacker because your base weight falls withing those weights. I agree that he has lots of "ultra light" items but as a whole his base falls outside the marker. The way he titles the video saying "ultra light gear setup" I think he is trying to say his set up as a whole is ultra light. It really is not a big deal it's just kind of annoying that Will uses the "ultra light" term to draw backpackers to his videos when in reality his set up falls outside the ultra light weight markers. Thanks for the question!
