you wont need the turbo haha, the stock 2.5 EJ is like 3-4x as powerful as the original 1600s were, and the non turbo ones were way more reliable under stress
...if word ever got out that engines will survive on track if you run an appropriate oilpan -- and conversely that an unbaffled pan is guaranteed bearing failure on a road course -- these recaps would be a lot shorter.
Welcome to the money pit that is _building_ an EV "racecar". (for the record, EV racing has been a thing for many years... just not in lemons. Yes, they are very short races. see also: spec model S) I would like to point out that RX8 build does not _remotely_ meet Jay's (pike's peak inspired) insane rules. The minute you said "tesla motor", I knew it wouldn't last long. They do make a great deal of power (HP), but it takes many pixies to do it. The Bolt guys have the right idea - production DC fast chargeable car taken to a commercial DC fast charger. (you'd be better off taking the donor model S [3, whatever] and using it as is... still won't go well as they overheat pretty fast.) We did race the *STOCK* Electrica, 'tho with 12v batts instead of 6v golf cart batteries because those are hard to find in "warehouse" quantities. It was every bit as horrible as expected. Then we put a modern EV conversion in it - fully capable of going over 100mph, just not for very long. (hint: you DO NOT want to go that fast in a Dodge Omni.) And a dozen+ battery configurations; battery tech is still crap.
The RX8 had some teething problems but it was mostly due to our inexperience. We actually only ran it at 275/550 kw power. But we ran into a few self inflicted issues with charging. By the time that was properly running, an overall win was very far from possible. So we turned it all the way up to demolish a track record, but the main coolant seal in the LDU (we should have replaced it) went, causing the main fuse to go, and the end of our race.
@@Venturestarx When it comes to EV racecars, you'll never grow all of your teeth. ;-) Also, always have spares... of practically everything. (esp. something as simple as a fuse.) [Again, the Bolt guys have the right idea. They just need two of them.]
@@jfbeam If you look up the coolant seal issue on and LDU, we should have deleted it and there would be no problem. The fuse was a symptom, not the real problem.
Can we get VIR added to the schedule?? It’s a great track, and the crew that runs it seems open to just about anything…I mean, blue ridge rock fest was there and those organizers are terrible!
The tow truck pass for position is maybe an all-time high lemons moment
They chose the inferior tow truck.
The tow truck folks deserve a trophy also
Randy Pobst always happy to be driving.
Randy is a frikkin' legend. He keeps the childlike joy of driving and brings his joy to everyone around.
I wanna race lemons SO BAD! I even have the car idea: A air cooled VW flat four swapped WRX with a turbo!
Except the turbo, sounds great!
But but but TURBO!!!! Because reasons!@@izzyplusplusplus1004

@@ghomerhust Pretty sure he meant he wants to put a VW engine in a WRX chassis.
It'd probably be more reliable than the wrx (no it wont)
Editor really upping the sound bite clip game, well done!
It was so fun! And the RX8 will be back!
I’m the Bolt guy. I am so excited to see the electric RX8 in Lemons! Welcome! Hope to race alongside you at an event sometime.😀
making a bmw less reliable by adding Mercedes is a very lemony thing to do
Awesome job, Spin It to Win It!!!

There needs to be a UK equivalent of this
You need to do an episode about miatas! I'm sure that there has been plenty of Hella Sweet miata's over the years.
It's basically a spec miata race out in Class-A.

I read everything I could find about your Jet Electrica. One question: after you got the Volt battery, did you still do battery swaps?

STOP the Vega crusher, mes amis !
