The skill shown by the tanker and the pilot boat skippers is remarkable !
One of the best videos on the tube! Great quality and interesting to watch. More, more please!
Wonderful!!!
Wow! Awesome video showing just how different two ships encounter an ocean that is never forgiving.
Impressive boat and ship handling. Thanks for posting.
Excellent video, shows clearly the problems facing pilots boarding and disembarking ships at Milford Haven.
This is a beautifully controlled piece of filming in perfect lighting which shows the enormous power of the sea (and the ship). You really see the dynamic responses of the ship in roll and pitch and would be excellent footage to show 2nd year Naval Architecture students as an illustration of what's at stake in good design. It's hard to believe that the pilot managed to get off the ship safely given the amount of relative movement. Hats off to pilots!
Hats-off to ALL seafarers, for they are a SPECIAL breed...Big Salutes !

M.V. British Robin was sheltering the pilot boat against the strong waves in order for the pilot to disembark safety . Thank you captain of the BR
+Mee Khing Lim exactly !!!!!
the pilot was unable to get off the tanker and was picked up at another port
@ Rod Thomas - It's called 'Overcarrying' and is occasionally the only option. Personally I think the Ship has turned too tight and lost all headway, the pilot cutter should be tucking in as the vessel makes a wide sweeping turn.
Mee Khing Lim it’s called giving it a lee
That’s the bum boat coming alongside to see if they need any cigarettes and beer ?
That Is EXACTLY How IT IS! I Did It For 33 years, EXCELLENT FOOTAGE
Great footage! Thanks for sharing!
Love the video. It must have been very windy at St Anne's Head.
I have sailed on this vessel in 2009. Memorable sailing on the trip to Primorsk :-)
Fantastic video, thank you.
Pilots have balls of steel! Man, that looked rough.
Great video, thank you!!!
thanks for this fantastic video
A quick 90 deg , beam on , and slow to drop the pilot . Probably the most dangerous 60 seconds of a pilots life !
That was incredible albeit really scary. I was mesmerized by this video.
Thanks for sharing. Gloria Paris
Like a mother when get piolet back on clutter now she square up to ship it green and she is in Ballast".
Awesome video dude!! Keep up filming this 😉😉😉
Oh apparently I already commented on this video 😀 nevertheless....still awesome !!!
Impressive stuff. Makes one giggle to realise that in the offshore wind industry all the boats would be hiding in port in those conditions and the safety men would be saying that offshore transfers in Hs of greater than 1.5m are not possible to do safely!! Clearly they are, when done by competent people. There are lessons here for the wind industry, one of which is that most of the people that work offshore within the re-newables sector, aren't really competent to do so!!
Outstanding video.
Interesting how much shelter the big ship gives the pilot vessel. Not enough, but a lot.
Milford Haven pilots - the elite. Respect and see you soon.
What a fabulosr video, of the 16 years I spent at sea the first 12 were with BP Shipping on vessels such as these although somewhat older lol.
awesome video
Gefällt mir sehr gut, sehr gute Aufnahme, ich habe die Aufnahme schon vor einiger Zeit angeschaut.
Impressive lea side maneuver by the Master !!! My Respects
LEE side not lea!
lee indeed...misstyped
turned way too early and way to abrubt, vessel lost all its speed and thats why it was rolling and pitching at the same time
awesome video! nice
Great footage but did you get the actual transfer? Thats the bit I was waiting for!
Nice video mate!!! I've shared it on my facebook-page called "shipping/harbors"
I have offloaded 1.3 million barrels of crude to British Robin a few times when I worked for Total Libya.
113,000 dwt ship tossed around like a toy, the power of the sea, cracking video .
@Wal Leece the video says otherwise .
WOW amazing footage.I always look at these big beautiful ships and still wonder how they stay afloat.
+brecans Google Archimedes' Principle. It will explain how these massive ladies float.
Sailed on the British Pioneer from Milford Haven in the early '70s.
Great video
The pilot boat was sure making heavy weather in its approach.
Fantastic and awesome.
Love this stuff
Great views! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Cheers.
TGFD here.
I've watched this video several times.
I find all that is going on in the world today very depressing. I fear the end is near.
Watching this video is relaxing and enjoyable. The wind and the sea are soothing.
I admire the beauty of the British Robin and the ease of the bridge officer as he provided the lee for the pilot boat.
BTW, does anyone know if the pilot was able to disembark that day?
The end still coming? Did I miss it?
Stunning
Hey, great video, which camera did you use? It looks so nice.
great video must say
Mv is making leeway for Pilot disembark
War mayhem making a lee is what you mean leeway is making way ahead
Damn she handles like a Corvette when she's empty!
I've sailed on the sister ship to this one. Rolls like hell in ballast!
RampantMinotaur Indeed, so big, yet she already rocks like crazy in like Force 7/8 winds??
Excellent.
My first ship British Beacon 1969, Midships accommodation no AC, running PG to Bombay/Australia.. then 8 more BP tankers.
Beautiful video. What type of camera are jou using?
good video friend !!!!!!!!
Hermoso luce un buque ..👍👍
The pilot jobs always so hard.
Most of all modern tankers have excessive stability due to very thick double bottom tanks.
Sometimes rolling up to 20 deg within 15 sec.
Double bottom tanks are specially designed in order preventive oil pollution in case grounding, but it lead for loosing seaworthiness. I remember old stile tankers they been much more comfortable then modern ones. Also it is not safe then vessel has such rolling.
Could not understand why roll preventing systems are not used while construction of the tankers?! Even small roll reduction tanks could prevent such Creasy rolling.
Can you imagine how is a fun for the crew while cross Atlantic passage then during 10-12 days rolling like hell especially during winter time.
Crew has not proper rest also such rolling could damage mechanical and electrical equipment.
Also for Pilot disembarking is a real danger.
Some new technical solutions to be implemented in order to improve the safety and reduce the rolling.
It looks as though this vessel was leaving port after discharging and was likely in light ballast condition in preparation for tank cleaning.
You get used to it.. even 250000 tonners roll.
So impressive , they say you earn respect , well they just did
Ship's sailing trim by astern 🌈🎄👌
I jumped onto A Spanish tanker at Capetown , similar to what we see here! never again! One slip and you're crushed. Helicopters after that!
Brilliant.

Meant to say I live very near to this area.
Good camerawork.
This's a good lea :-D
Looks like all the safety measures gone with the wind for the pilot boat.
So people were rescue but what happened to the little ship???
What really impresses me is how she makes that bootlegger turn to allow the pilot boat to come alongside in her lee.
But how did the poor pilot cross that vertical gap from the end of the gangplank to the pilot boat?!
shamus ass do you think that - in this particular case - those magnets were actually used?
+Sgt. Bilko The gangplank is an accommodation ladder. They use a pilot ladder to scale down the vertical gap from the bottom of the accommodation ladder to the pilot boat.
Very nice video!
Nice video 💐💐💐👍🙌

Расскажите океану какое у вас огромное судно:) 7 футов под килем!
To fakt. Dziwię się tylko, czemu oni płyną w taką pogodę bez balastu.
"rather windy" you meant gale. By the way the Robin looks empty???
Alex Folsome well considering Milford haven is a oil terminal there could be a clue there what do you think 🤔

Tough sleddin' for that pilot boat...and whoever has to scamper up the gangway!
It looked she stopped making any headway inthe minute or so.
Wish to be a seamen. For every life. #respect#, salute. SALVtion

is the Pilot safe ??
Woa
Wow, great video.
Where were you filming from?
St Anns Head - from the footpath adjacent to the lighthouse.
I know that place well. Good job.

I bet she's flexing a bit in those waves
Stuff i guess it pays not to think too much about.
They don’t flex ships hog or sag
Very dangerous to pick up Pilot under such weather conditions. Heli picking up is much more safe

Pilots earned their fee that day.
Pilots are indeed brave people but I just do not like to see them risking their lives in such weather. With GPS being so accurate and the mapping of the sea is now so detailed , is it necessary to have pilots these days? I just wonder.
If we do need pilots, in such bad weather the disembarking could be done in a different manner. Knowing that there are free fall lifeboats these days, I am sure that a capsule could be designed such that in such bad weather, the capsule would be put on board before the ship departs and outside the harbour, the pilot would enter this capsule which would be lowered or made to freefall to the sea which would be later picked up by the pilot boat. I feel this could be safer that an unprotected pilot coming down the gangway with only a life-jacket, waiting for the pilot boat to come nearer till he steps on it, trying to hang onfor his life with the nearest handle!
Starting at 0.25 these pictures are incredibly sharp. Congratulations.
Pilots are necessary, all the more so with the qualifications of those on the bridge much in question. Maritime accidents are usually human error and GPS does not help.
Can't beat the human eyeball.
I agree. There is alot more to handling and navigation of large ships when entering and exiting a port than a GPS can provide. It requires the detailed local knowledge and experience of a pilot.
