I feel very sorry for those who criticize this recording; I would like to hear them play this piece live and have someone record it on an old cassette recorder. I wish I could play like that again, but I feel that at my age, it is impossible; I repeat, I would love to be able to sound like that again, even if they criticize me. Not because you are an expert criticizing others, you would sound better.
Every time someone of the Vizzuti caliber issue something new we are tempted to expect exactly the same style of performance from anyone else who dares to perform it. Yours is different...and pulling that off on a live performance, wow! But we expect nothing less from you, maestro! It is tough to be on top 🙂 Personally I felt like it ended a bit too soon, I mean I wanted to here more of it.
I will put it this way. Allen does what he does very well and Firedance is his song and I do not believe anyone can play it better. Arturo does what he does very well and does his style better than anyone else. I can remember him playing with dizzy and Arturo stole the show on that. No one could even come close to him on that. See, what i am getting at is that everyone has their style that they perfected and I love the diversity. I have heard Arturo play beautiful ballads and they are chilling but when I hear something that is out of tune or if they cannot control those notes then I turn it off. That is all I have to say but I cannot say there is no best trumpet players as all have their style of music. Stick to what you are great at.
@@garyrumer153 Coming from the same guy who thought it appropriate to personally insult Arturo's trumpet playing with your thumping tyre/wheel whatever it was crap. I shouldn't waste my time even responding to comments of such limited mentality and self awareness, but I'll make exception in your case.
@@mattpburke Ok idiot. I only criticized his upper register but Arturo is a great musician with great technique. He had a powerful upper register years ago but unfortunately his tone got weak and thin up high. That is the only complaint that I have with him and I am sure with giving his lip time to recover then he can regain his power and strength up high.
I read these disgusting comments a few days ago about Arturo’s “weak upper register” and his inability to play like Maynard, Cat, and Maurice and withheld commenting in response because it angered me beyond words! I have had the pleasure and honor of working for Maynard, studying with, learning from and working for Arturo now for many years! This is music - a form of expression, and a universal language. NOT some pissing contest of who is better, plays higher, louder, etc. To he who’s name I shall not use, listen with an open mind and an open heart and keep your criticisms locked away in your own practice room! Attacking anyone for doing what they love is pathetic, but attacking a Legend is purely disgusting!!! EDIT - This is KT in disguise...
I sat directly in front of Allen Vizzutti, when he debuted this chart with Woody Herman back in the 1970’s. At the time, I turned to my trumpet teacher and said quite simply: “No one…I mean NO ONE - will ever be able to pull this off as Allen just did. I have since seen some amazing players attempt it, but until I heard Arturo take it on, I frankly felt my prediction have proved accurate. I didn’t know Arturo in the 1970’s. He was languishing in Cuba. When I finally heard him in person, I said to myself this is someone who might just not only pull it off, but also improve upon it! He is that spectacularly accomplished! And so, I can say unequivocally that Arturo is without peer in the same way as Allen. In short, he is an incredible and incomparable trumpet player I can only marvel at even as I call him a dear friend!
Maestro Arturo I heard you play like this every night for two weeks and had the pleasure of doing the sound board for you in Ronnie's - and Dizzy jumped out the audience to do the Night In Tunisia break wearing a sombrero and Pete had made me swear never to tell anyone about your call to Tokyo. What a night! Peace & Love Arturo.
The only thing this video lacks is the video part - it is SO much fun watching a Master at work. Yes, there are differences between Arturo and Allen, but every time a sports game starts and someone signs the National Anthem, it's the same song but each artist adds a little of themselves. And that is the wonder of music! If anyone wants to criticize this work, you MUST be able to play it better. Any takers??? Thought not! Bravo Dr. Sandoval! And thank you.
Spectacular playing from beginning to end! Not just the technique but the passion and the attitude are just breathtaking too!! What an interpretation. I saw Allen Vizutti play this in the seventies with Woody Herman and was bowled over then. I'm bowled over now!!
Love the Vizzutti original, love this rendition as well!! Music is so much more than playing notes...it's communication on another level. I just wish I knew a few more words...
Arturo's solos are the best parts. Everything else just feels chaotic. Fire Dance is a deceptively difficult piece to perform, especially without a conductor up front leading the orchestra, because it really is an orchestral type piece of music. This is why the Woody Herman BB performance in Warsaw was so good, and even then, you can tell that Allen was having some trouble. Arturo was solid in this, but it mostly just sounds like he's playing A Night in Tunisia.
Ben Kalik I agree with you.I love Arturo but Alan plays Alan way better. This is not as clean. He tries to cover by playing things higher but his style doesn’t match this piece as well. That being said they both are the best at what they do.
@@gertnood His upper register is very weak and he doesn't have that stamina like Allan, Maurice, Maynard, Cat Anderson. Cat Anderson could play higher and he had full power right up to beyond a triple C. No squeaks there. Now Sandoval is a great player with great skills but his upper register is not that great...
@SRV1 Hitting high notes is one thing but you need to be able to play those notes soft or loud and Sandoval needs to put the mic right in the bell of the horn or you cannot hear it. He is a great player and very skilled but his upper register just doesn't cut it. sorry but that is my opinion.
Your comment is as obtuse as your sensibility. A real musician or casual listener would appreciate Arturo”s interpretation even if any other player has a “better” way for his particular taste.

He is weak on the upper register and Allen plays it so much better with a much better tone also.
