The People’s Joker Interview: Vera Drew Discuss the Legality of the Movie
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- The People’s Joker is embracing the playful tagline, “An illegal queer coming of age comic book movie by Vera Drew,” but it seems as though Warner Bros. is taking things a bit more seriously. The TIFF website just revealed that The People’s Joker has been withdrawn from the film festival due to “rights issues.”
The movie is an expression of Drew’s personal truth via popular DC characters like The Joker, Harley Quinn, Batman, and more. In the film, Drew stars as Joker, an aspiring clown grappling with “gender identity, first love, and old foes all while founding an illegal comedy theater in Gotham City.” The production is a filmmaking feat that saw Drew open the creative process to other artists, musicians, and animators eager to contribute to a project that could resonate with audiences that big budget superhero movies very, very, very, rarely speak to through their narratives. It’s a film that only came together due to Drew’s drive and ability to inspire others to see this vision through to the finish line.
While it’s a little unclear exactly where that finish line stands at this point, not only did The People’s Joker get to hold a World Premiere screening before being removed from the line-up, but I also had the opportunity to chat with the team behind the film before this news broke. Writer, director and star Vera Drew, writer Bri LeRose, and star Nathan Faustyn all visited the Collider Supper Suite and Media Studio at Marbl to discuss how they got this one-of-a-kind film off the ground and also weighed in on the legality of the project.
Check out what they said in this interview!

Lot of huge fans of copyright law in these comments for some reason. I personally do not stan any law that hard, so I don't really get it, but hey, you do you.
Because it's theft of an owned character and property. If a big corporation stole some smaller unknown artist's character and made a movie for profit you people defending this trash would be up in arms. Just because it is stealing from a big corp doesn't make it right. Or make it Robin Hood. It isn't doing anything for the people or the oppressed. It is literally just a selfish theif who feels entitled to other's things. Absolutely ridiculous honestly. If it cared so much about this idea it would have uploaded to UA-cam for free and there would be no problem. It wanted money.
Yeah, laws only matter when you like them and they benefit you personally.
@@VogtTD Yeah, basically!
Just thinly veiled transphobia
Turns out copyright is real.
Turns out copyright is terrible for art and you can’t care about art and support modern copyright
@@ravelordnito478 fortunately, this wasn’t art but propaganda.
@@ravelordnito478 It's a double-edged sword. Copyright also protects artists' work from being stolen.
@@wonderanchor337 also depends on who owns the content & who does the stealing. You can justify a lot depending on which party occupies these roles, and it’s not a surprise that the party who feels emboldened enough to do the stealing also feels the most transgressed when they are stolen from
@@darksideblues135 what definition of art are you using?
So many morons missing the forest for the trees in this comment section. For one, this is absolutely parody which falls under fair use. It doesn't matter if the characters look similar or have the same name. I may not be a legal expert, but there's enough weird Simpsons porn on the internet to prove me right on this. If the work is transformative, it's fair use.
Second, Joker debuted in 1940 and would have entered the public domain by now if Disney didn't lobby the government to indefinitely extend their copyrights. Regardless of how good or bad the film is, it should be allowed to exist. I'd rather someone put their own spin on old IPs rather than let Disney and Warner Brothers continue squating in the cultural zeitgeist, occasionally pushing out a half-assed movie to justify their continued ownership.
🤢🤢🤢
okay, fake poser.
I speak for everyone when I say that we won't be watching.

So funny how all these *definitely not transphobic people* are suddenly experts on copyright law lol
She straight up called the film illegal. She knew what she was getting into. But yeah having said that it’s taking a massive dump on a beloved character and I’m pretty sure that the movie sucks and it’s terribly unfunny. Hyper woke people simply can’t do comedy beyond unconscious self-satire.
I'm not transphobic by any means. I said in someone else's comment that I'd honestly much rather watch an original story with original characters based around the same storyline of a trans woman coming out and her hardships and so on. I feel like that would have a much deeper impact on people. It wouldn't feel forced. Its not borrowing the name of the joker or Gotham or Batman for recognition, but it's something that can stand on its own. It would be much more interesting to me if THAT movie were made. Not a "joker parody" movie.
Yeah, I think this film looks lazy but it 100 percent should exist. And I would definitely take a film subtlety attacking played out comic book movies than an actual comic book movie.
@@MexicanBanditfunny how just having a queer character is pushing an agenda to a fascist freak such as yourself
Of course, because anyone who criticizes a shitty plagiarized movie must be transphobic.
theres has been many joker parodys in you tube that made money come on
Who? I’ve never heard of them and that’s probably why they made money if they exist. This dumbass literally took their film to a highly publicized film festival. No one cares about it being queer they care about the blatant copyright infringement and the audacity of this director to expect no one to criticize it

I think you should consider being a UA-camr and have your own channel. You share some good tips for strategic investments.
I'm keen on trying this out. Thank you all for the information
Legally they can use the character but they can't use his name. Thats why Jerome in the show "Gotham" was never called "Joker". They didn't have the rights to use the name.

Collider would like this bot ass comment. Lol "all the right ways" huh?
@@Gringo_Mayo I just think the fact Warner Bros wants to stop the showings of a small budget custom queer allegory parody means it pushes the line. The fact that it pisses off transphobes across the globe pushes the line.
I dont know how anyone can see this and think "aw jeewiz, that sure looks boring and unchallenging."
It looks fun
I think that what pisses people off, isn't the fact that it's a story about a trans person coming out to the world and facing those problems... It's the fact that she's calling this the Joker and basing her story in Gotham is what people have problems with. I feel like if it were a completely original story, with original characters, and the same storyline? People would accept it more. Personally, I think having an original story about a trans person coming out is more powerful than leaning on the name of an already established character in an already established universe. There's, "pushing the line" and then there's copyright infringement. I don't think that WB and DC care that the character is trans, I think that WB and DC care that they're using characters that legally belong to WB Studios and DC.
@@eazeup5932 Warner Bros pushes against it because it pushes forward on interpretations of copyright and parody rights, as a free speech issue. I think using Joker as a medium to do it was clever.
@@insurance3012 I think using the joker to do it was blatantly using someone else's IP for your own monetary gain. Warner Bros is pushing against it because they're obviously using Warner Bros characters in their movie and calling it their own. You can't use someone else's idea and someone else's world they created, call it a parody, and expect them to sit quietly. She even said the movie is an illegal comic book movie. She said it herself. She can claim she said it to get people to watch the movie, but that's marketing to the fact that you know you're making a film with the same characters as DC and Warner Bros and calling them your own. You even say that you don't have DC's permission to make the movie in the trailer... So when DC and Warner Bros step in and say they don't want the movie out there... You can't really say that they're wrong. You gave them all the reasoning to step in. It really would've been such a better movie if they were original characters. If it were an original movie based on a trans woman coming out and her struggles and so on. It would've had a more powerful message than a weakly premised "parody"
There’s parody and there’s making a movie about a character that is owned by someone else. This is a character named Joker, she has green hair and she has identical makeup. Why not have a character named The Jester with blue hair? They probably would have gotten away with it then.
@@petersonconald2816 I get being unoriginal. Like, you can do a ripoff character. Bringing the entire character over whoelsale just ensures you get sued and no one sees your film.
Man, you guys love corporations… they do not love you back!
@@Pizzapartydad keep up the cope it should help with those sleepless nights

Great, more incoherent gender propaganda wearing beloved lores and franchises as money-hungry skin suits. It’s fascinating watching the entire entertainment industry destroy itself from the inside out, imploding into a black hole of woke politics and reboots, where no semblance of the original work is left intact. I’ll be glad when this cultural revolution deconstructs itself out of existence. 🤣
lol wow
Nothing about what you just said makes sense
Then you’ll die waiting
Spot on
Yeah I’d hate to see new filmmakers whose voices haven’t been heard make films that can appeal to the general public by focusing on beloved franchises. It would be SO terrible to challenge people who are stuck in their old-time ideologies… Let’s just have your executive approved, same-as-they’ve-always-been movies. We all know when restrictions are put on the artists, it makes the film BETTER! In a world with people running around in tights shooting lasers, it really would just be “incoherent gender propaganda” to have a -GASP- trans character?!!!
But seriously… Let people be creative. Let the film industry change as the world changes. Let art EXIST!
