Tory Lanez Says Fans Care More About Melodies Than Words, Shares How He Taught Himself To Sing

- Hard Knock Tv's Nick Huff Barili sits down with Tory Lanez for in-depth interview at Truth Studios. In episode 2, Tory and Nick talk about how Tory's cousin almost convinced him to quit chasing his dream of rapping, telling him all the reasons why he wasn't going to make it. After a few days of thinking his cousin was right, Tory got back to rapping and soon after found his first manager. Tory says that watching his father doing sermons as preacher when he was young, influenced the way Tory puts on a live show and interacts with crowds at his concerts. When he first started singing, Tory says he wasn't very good. He taught himself how to sing by studying all the people he wanted to sound like. In particular Tory says that The Dream and Tupac had a big influence on his singing and how to used his voice. Watching Michael Jackson, Missy Elliott and others growing up, inspired Tory to want to play different characters, which explains why he can flow in and out of different styles from his songs "Say It" to "Diego". Tory takes pride in being labeled a "hook master" and says that now when he hears a beat he immediately goes in the booth and records the first melodies that come to mind without thinking of the words. He then puts the lyrics to the melodies ones he has found his pockets. Tory says that fans don't care about words as much as melodies and baselines. He gives the example of Kanye and Lil Pump's hit "I Love It" and how little kids are going around singing "You are suck a fucking Hoe, I Love It" without having much clue as to what that even means. Tory says that the catchy melodies and baselines are what get people hooked and that people don't event pay attention to what they are actually saying. This episode has much more and we still have two more episodes of this interview! Make sure to subscribe to / hardknocktv to be the first to be notified when part 3 with Tory goes live. When people say that it can't happen for you, they are really just reflecting what they think about themselves, their outlook. Never let other peoples perception define who you are and who you can be.
Thx man I needed that
Thank you
Exactly. I also think the new age way of viewing success is through the validation of others and fame. Not by completing our body of work and mastering our craft as it should be. The richest people are behind the scenes and a lot of historically successful people have died poor and underrated.
Amen brother
everything spoken from the tongue comes from the heart, it reflects whats inside you. make that shit count put out LOVE and positivity. I guarantee you it'll always be around you like sunshine
Just from this interview, Tory has taught me that there's no set path to create anything. You can be yourself and be as crazy, non-understandable, and different as you want. As long as the product is communicated effectively. Because everyone has their own genius ways.
Thank U. Many people feel like my written materials cannot be understood
@@jameshamilton5947 well that's not what he said. He said when the product is communicated effectively... that would mean that yours isn't tho. So you have to change some things, but still can do it your own way, you just have to find a good middle ground
damn. never seen a tory lanez interview but this is a humble and smart dude. Imma go listen to his album !!
Nigga breakfast Club??
I say lost cause is his best mixtape
@JaQuille Sanders i will bro !
Yess go hes great team tory
Same, never really paid attention to him but after watching this interview imma go listen to his music more
When he was talking about wasting ideas by writing them instead of freestyling is so relatable. I stopped writing when doing melodies and it completely changed my music. Tory is so smart and a huge inspiration

facts: Most people don't know what HIPHOP is....im an old head and constantly need to tell people HIP HOP IS NOT RAPPING......Rapping is a PART of HIP HOP Culture it is NOT the culture itself...Tory doesn't need to rap ONCE...what he does is still HIP HOP...Mary J Blige is the QUEEN OF HIP HOP SOUL, Erykah Badu , Nate Dogg, T-pain, Akon is all HIP HOP and they don't rap...i love this new style of melodey HipHop it adds a branch to our tree called HIP HOP....Tory keep blazen us..HIP HOP 4EVER
@Aristides Gonzalez hes Basicly saying there's more to the culture than rapping u feel me
Aristides Gonzalez He just elaborating because some people still get confused.
I absolutely agree. People don’t understand HIP HOP. This went over a bunch of heads
Aristides Gonzalez he did say that
Erykah Badu? T-Pain? You buggin.
I’m not even gonna 🧢 this was the most relatable and inspiring video I have ever seen
Tory Lanez is a musical genius. He has worked hard for that ability, and his last album is proof.

In terms of how he taught himself to sing reminds me so much of myself, I've literally been doing what he said he would do before I even saw this video! It's crazy how similar we actually all are as human beings and we rarely even realize it.
yeah everybody does it, but doing that for an extended period of time puts strain on your throat, and will make it so you cannot continue a career in singing. you gain more power by doing vocal warmups and learning how to make the sounds by hitting different parts of your hard/soft palette with the air, and knowing how to push it with your diaphragm. i suggest watching videos from a guy called Jeff Rolka, he's really good and it'll help you learn your limitations, and exceed them within a few weeks.

THERE'S NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN AND OUR THOUGHTS AREN'T SOLELY OURS!
I dont understand how a person can hate tory lanez but still finds time to watch his interview and post some negativity 🤷stay in your lanes and let us receive the message in peace
exactly
Well we know why
Something about when a person tells you "it will never work" that motivates you to prove them wrong. The only thing is figuring out if they really meant it or were actually trying to motivate you to prove them wrong
He make sick music and dope hooks
@Tee Lotus tory is insanely underrated. theres nothing he cant do!
Hes a baby goat honestly. Hes been ghost writing aince 2009
Rick dude Tory is dope
Rick dude his music his nuthing but auto tune proof me otherwise 314 461 7621
Iam Lobo there’s plenty of artist that use auto tune and still don’t make it. He got the lyrics and the sound listen to his whole album and features he does for other artist
That's How Leo Are They Keep Pushing Even If They Fail They Confident ♌🦁💪🏾

Lyrics are still important it's more about how you structure the lyrics. And it also depends on the instrumental too. Some beats call for lyrics and others call for melodies and vibes.
Facts.
combine it all and you'll definitley see the results
Lyrics come after, your brain hears the song in a macro level then you pick up the minute details like lyrics. Even if it was a poem with no back track then it’s STILL about how the person says it, emotion, their rhythm, etc and THEN come the lyrics.
This interview explains why Tory is such a chameleon when it comes to music. He really can fit into any genre. The drawback is that by being a jack of all trades, you become a master of none
..
He's a master of all.
@AshtO a master of all disguises
The full quote of the saying is, Jack of all trades, master of none, but still more useful than someone would can only do one thing.
Rather have someone who can stay in his lane developing his own style than to have Tory Lanez not knowing how to stay in his own lane copying other rappers flows & rhymes. Nigga got bodied by a UA-cam rapper but wants to claim he the best rapper. We don't need Tory
What he said about being close to your purpose. That hit me so deep💯💯🔥 The world will move out of the way for someone who knows what they want💯
It goes Beat > Melody > Lyrics
If you only focus on lyrics then you become a conscious rapper that nobody listens to
This was actually a great interview. It showed his growth and certainly highlighted his maturity. He looked quite comfortable with himself and his current space at the this point in time. Definitely talented and I certainly got more respect for him after seeing this.

Words are still very important. Imagine picking the words to express yourself while never missin a beat to a melody. Words describe you as a person n where your from.
@cloudykai couldn't have said it better... even through communicating with people in life, sometimes its just about the vibe you get, that connection before words come in to play. Music does that.
If u develop a good ear training u will know what words sounds good and what matches with the flows or cadence and thats how u get good at it....its like a muscle memory.....u get better everytime u project new tape
I love that the interviewer let him talk and didn’t interrupt... it shows his thought process and it’s amazing!
Great video title. Sucks It took me years to realize 99% of people DON'T care about the lyrics nearly as much as I thought they did. But now I make songs that chart... had to learn sometime. Better to learn now.
What do you think about age in rap? Can a 28 year old with no momentum make it?
dejourne moon at what age did jay z put out his first album ?
People care about lyrics, yours wasn't good enough. If you have killer lyrics and add rhythm to them, man you will blow up like the best ones, Eminem for example.
@@po1ntu depends on what ppl bruh, and what type of rap. For a song to make a HIT, no one cares. To build a solid career and fans who got ur back, then yes
Not too mention Danny Brown... Old will forever be a classic album for me 🙌🏽❤️
This was actually surprising. It's good to see rappers put their personas down for a second, and talk about their processes, and just real world things. I like that he's conscious of the power of words in well produced songs and it's influence.

I like when Tory has a story behind his music, and how his sound adds that dramatic feel that I feel and visualize.
That creation process spot on tho😅
Tory told us his secrets. I’ve never heard him say how he figured his sound out. Great interview.
Pray he always stays this cool, down to earth & humble. Much respect to his dad for raising him right & teaching him morals.
No one looks for content anymore everyone wants to escape and melodies do that facts!
I love melodies but words can be everything also. But when you catch my ear with the melody and you speaking some real shit I tend to gravitate towards that more tbh
He’s right about kids enjoying the vibe, and not paying attention to the words, the problem is that they are still hearing and internalizing those words. They’re not just listening to instrumentals. Those words determine how they think of themselves, how they dress, and interact with other people. The ideologies in the music are being inculcated into their minds. This is why prescription drugs, narcotics that weren’t embraced by urban communities 15 years ago, are in heavy use now in those same communities and beyond.
The fact that when you're an artist and you have a gift everybody not going to understand just sit quite most of the time
Super dope interview. Those that you doubted will be the ones you crown.
This was a really good interview, tory dropped some good gems in here!
Thank you for this interview!
Thank you Tory . This been the battle I been on for months now. Glad I woke up to this video
This is why Tory is my favorite artist you know how hard it is convincing people to record a song with you ? It’s just better sometimes learning how to sing or rap yourself because people be temporary or don’t fuck with you for some odd reason but you have to keep it moving. Big respect for Tory teaching himself how to sing, singing is not easy unless you have a good voice already.

Thank you !!Happy New Years ! !Love this year will be OUR year!!!!
Tory has bars and melody put that shit together and you cant be stopped much love tory keep it up g.
He makes a good point. The flip side to it is that “melodic rap” has made it to where all these people who do it just use auto tune and wind up sounding like eachother because of it. Why want to sound like everybody else? Artists copy eachother sound and wind up just fitting in rather than standing out.
Am also an upcoming rapper who wants to sing at times and this was very helpful 💯💯
T J he said he used to listen to John legend and sing it out loud on the back of the bus. He started out singing low to himself and then got louder as he got better. True shit

Amazing video, truly inspirational. I related a lot to the process. He's right about possibly losing the best part of the creativity by trying to write it. Confirmed it for me.
Facts
@King A - the spaces in a beat where the vocals can fit
POOOOOOMPLEX2 what does that mean ?
What? That never happened to me as soon as I hear the beat I hear kyrics and when I hear I try to remember at least 2 lines and then everything flows after

18:20 Tory is talking straight facts. People don’t care about the words on a song. For example, look at the lyrics on Heya - OutKast. Andre is singing about an unstable relationship, but no one would know. He even say in the chorus “y'all don't want to here me, ya just want to dance”
from 16;00 tory was saying the perfect words for a creative like myself. some priceless information. and its such a great feeling when you surprise yourself.
THE HOOOOOK MASTER!!!
That’s because it’s all about a VIBE . Back to how it was originally made lmao bass didn’t enhance artist it enhanced the vibe it enhanced the beat the very thing people cared about in the beginning when hip hop started mcs were meant to hype and help the Dj and the beat.
