  • Hard Knock Tv's Nick Huff Barili sits down with Tory Lanez for in-depth interview at Truth Studios. In episode 2, Tory and Nick talk about how Tory's cousin almost convinced him to quit chasing his dream of rapping, telling him all the reasons why he wasn't going to make it. After a few days of thinking his cousin was right, Tory got back to rapping and soon after found his first manager. Tory says that watching his father doing sermons as preacher when he was young, influenced the way Tory puts on a live show and interacts with crowds at his concerts. When he first started singing, Tory says he wasn't very good. He taught himself how to sing by studying all the people he wanted to sound like. In particular Tory says that The Dream and Tupac had a big influence on his singing and how to used his voice. Watching Michael Jackson, Missy Elliott and others growing up, inspired Tory to want to play different characters, which explains why he can flow in and out of different styles from his songs "Say It" to "Diego". Tory takes pride in being labeled a "hook master" and says that now when he hears a beat he immediately goes in the booth and records the first melodies that come to mind without thinking of the words. He then puts the lyrics to the melodies ones he has found his pockets. Tory says that fans don't care about words as much as melodies and baselines. He gives the example of Kanye and Lil Pump's hit "I Love It" and how little kids are going around singing "You are suck a fucking Hoe, I Love It" without having much clue as to what that even means. Tory says that the catchy melodies and baselines are what get people hooked and that people don't event pay attention to what they are actually saying. This episode has much more and we still have two more episodes of this interview! Make sure to subscribe to / hardknocktv to be the first to be notified when part 3 with Tory goes live. When people say that it can't happen for you, they are really just reflecting what they think about themselves, their outlook. Never let other peoples perception define who you are and who you can be.

      Exactly. I also think the new age way of viewing success is through the validation of others and fame. Not by completing our body of work and mastering our craft as it should be. The richest people are behind the scenes and a lot of historically successful people have died poor and underrated.

      @InfinityOnHi 5 років тому +25

      yeah everybody does it, but doing that for an extended period of time puts strain on your throat, and will make it so you cannot continue a career in singing. you gain more power by doing vocal warmups and learning how to make the sounds by hitting different parts of your hard/soft palette with the air, and knowing how to push it with your diaphragm. i suggest watching videos from a guy called Jeff Rolka, he's really good and it'll help you learn your limitations, and exceed them within a few weeks.

    He’s right about kids enjoying the vibe, and not paying attention to the words, the problem is that they are still hearing and internalizing those words. They’re not just listening to instrumentals. Those words determine how they think of themselves, how they dress, and interact with other people. The ideologies in the music are being inculcated into their minds. This is why prescription drugs, narcotics that weren’t embraced by urban communities 15 years ago, are in heavy use now in those same communities and beyond.

    He makes a good point. The flip side to it is that “melodic rap” has made it to where all these people who do it just use auto tune and wind up sounding like eachother because of it. Why want to sound like everybody else? Artists copy eachother sound and wind up just fitting in rather than standing out.

    ever since Tory started doing those Instagram live sessions where he lets the audience pick a beat, a title for his song, and then proceeds to record multiple songs in a session, I've come to respect his work ethic. now I'm here watching hardknock interviews of him.

    18:20 Tory is talking straight facts. People don’t care about the words on a song. For example, look at the lyrics on Heya - OutKast. Andre is singing about an unstable relationship, but no one would know. He even say in the chorus “y'all don't want to here me, ya just want to dance”

    That’s because it’s all about a VIBE . Back to how it was originally made lmao bass didn’t enhance artist it enhanced the vibe it enhanced the beat the very thing people cared about in the beginning when hip hop started mcs were meant to hype and help the Dj and the beat.
