My wife saved our daughters life by knowing how to respond when she had a completely blocked airway whilst eating. She had seconds to respond and we both thank god she had received first aid training. If you have kids, or supervise kids, please learn how to do this.
My daughter was 18mth and choked on a chip. As a preschool teacher of 11yrs, I thank God I had that training over the yrs. You always wonder if you’ll handle that situation well or panic.. I must say, there wasn’t a seconds hesitation. Grabbed her, threw her over my thigh, face towards the floor and began thrusts on her back. She threw up everywhere but I couldn’t have cared less. She’s 3 1/2 now. I was so glad to hear you say choking can be silent. I’ve told my husband that so much, I would leave the room and ask him to watch her, he would respond “I’m right here”, and that was always my response, “they don’t always make a sound when they choke, Watch Her”.
I neither have children nor plan to have them in life. But still watched it to save someone else's child in emergency if that time comes. You explained well. Thank you.
Love that she goes into details about the things to watch out for and how to cut foods, as a Daycare provider I always recommend parents learn infant and toddler CPR. And not only that but develop safety habits...buckling kids into seats and not just sitting there because a table attachment is in front of them, if you have an infant always put soft things or Ideally mats, on the floor with them if they're learning to balance and sitting up. When they're learning to walk, walk behind them just incase they fall backwards or forwards, always do quick checks when they fall or even at night to make sure older children's wounds are healing properly and that they aren't picking at them....I want my kids to be safe at home and in daycare all the time.
This is life saving information. But as the dad of a 1 year old, this gave me anxiety just watching and learning. Key info you hope to NEVER have to use.
Take a CPR class through the American Heart Association. It will teach you these techniques and more. It also teaches you what to do if the the attempt to remove the object fails and the person goes unresponsive.
@@amitdjp Huh? God has given you common sense and the ability to get trained in the event that one of your children starts choking. She saved my life. ❤ Moral of the story perhaps coco puffs are not that safe for a 6 year old.
a scary but lucky thing that the lady was ready and knowledgeable. ah! but an airway obstruction can happen even to an adult, best for the child to learn to eat mindfully while young
This video helps a lot my son choked with a macnet toy the ones they have marbles my son is autistic and have speech delay and for manipulates the teachers use the macnetics, he was playing with them and that is went the terrible choking experience happened , he tried to separate the macnets with his mouth because it was difficult with his hands and that's how the marble block his throat, I was able to help him but the horrible experience especially when you panic is terrible , my son is okay a very happy boy and no more manipulates toys that are small in home, this video helps a lot, thank you!
Great advice thank you.. but terrifying! I have a 17 year old , a 10 year old and I’m pregnant now. 😨 both of my children have choked before when they were babies and I almost lost my mind! Thankfully they both happened to get it up.. 🙏🏻

Hi! This video is strictly for educational purposes only - before an emergency occurs. In an emergency it is vital you call emergency services who will assist you further
A toddler just died in a neighboring town a few days ago because she choked on a snack we call 'jellyace' with the wrapper on and her family didn't know how to do this so they kept on poking the snack until it was too late 😢
Yes I sliced hotdogs in circles bites. My daughter choked and turned blue ,there wasn't sound coming from her,I tried everything and called 911. My daughter was dying in front me. Thank God my husband walked in the door in time and he was able to dislodge it. The worst day of my life.
Thankyou for this important information! I''ve only ever encountered a choking child once and ended up doing back blows with an open palm because I hadn't seen this video, thankfully it was still effective but now I know the proper way to do it :)
Thank you all for posting this publicly!! My dad gave me the Heimlich when I was a kid when I choked on steak. My niece is 4 and has enlarged tonsils so choking is a possibility. I'd die if I didn't know how to save her. That girl is my life!! So, again, thank you so much 🙏 ❤
My oldest child ( at one and a half ) was eating in his high chair Everything was small sized but I can only think he must have stuffed a large amount in his mouth. I turned from the kitchen sink to see him laying his head on the high chair. First thing I did was lift up his body and punch him in the stomach - almost worked but the food seemed to go down again. Picked him up and did the Heimlich. It worked. Had just left nursing so reacted without panic. May not have been the correct move but it worked!! It was the only move I knew. Yes, terrifying!! 43 years ago.

Thank you for the well put together video. Quick question why don’t you compress the stomach in babies for Heimlich? Does the chest compression break sternum or breast bone?
The heimlich (or abdominal thrusts) carry risk of damaging the baby's internal organs. It is extremely unlikely you will cause any damage to the breast bone doing chest thrusts. :)
Hi Alvena. These videos are made strictly for education and learning - before an accident occurs. If you are dealing with an emergency you must contact emergency services immediately.
Anything can be potentially hazardous. My hubby knows a person who lost his child because of banana. It stuck in her throat. My sister once nearly choked to death when she was a toddler. Coz she ate candy while laughing. Her face turned blue, and my dad scooped the candy out of her throat using finger (he didn't know that's dangerous). There's some blood on his finger coz it scratched my sis' throat. And after that incident, he would crash any candies with hammer before giving it to us and he'd tell us to sit down and not to speak or laugh. That kinda take away the joy of eating candies, but that's what I also teach to my kid.
My son choked once. I tried all of this and it didn’t come out, I looked in his throat, saw the piece of food and was able to dislodge it with my finger. He took a big breath but I was so shaken up.

This is the recommended first aid for all ages -the Heimlich is not recommended as it is not effective and is more likely to cause internal damage

Hi, I really like how detailed your videos are, but I am confused about conscious choking in children greater than 1 year old. I've seen several other youtube videos from children's hospital and medical sorts who show the response being abdominal thrusts above the belly button in a hugging/heimlich-like hold. Your video is the only one where I've seen back blows and non-"hugging" abdominal thrusts for children greater than 1 year old. I was wondering if you could explain what the reason is for that difference.
We go by the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines (ANZCOR) evidence based practice guidelines - here is an excerpt from the guideline and a link to the full guideline (section 4 Airway):
A Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) is a life-threatening emergency. Chest thrusts or
back blows are effective for relieving FBAO in conscious adults and children.1 [Class A: LOE
IV] Life-threatening complications associated with use of abdominal thrusts have been
reported in 32 case reports.1 [Class A not recommended; LOE IV] Therefore, the use of

rapid sequence until the obstruction is relieved.1 More than one technique may be needed:
there is insufficient evidence to determine which should be used first.1
