I love hearing stories of voice actors getting the job for doing something wildly different than what the casting was initially looking for. For example, when they were casting for The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, they were initially planning for Grim to have an English accent but Greg Eagle decided to mix it up a bit and gave Grim a Jamaican accent instead, and thus Grim was truly born!
Klaus in American Dad was originally written as French and named Jacques (I think). Dee Bradley Baker, who speaks German fluently, did the German accent during the audition, and everyone agreed it was funnier.
I had a copy of the show bible for Tale Spin, they described Don Carnage to prospective writers as being like Kevin Kline's Otto from A Fish Called Wanda.
Well, I guess that answers that. For a couple of years now I was really thinking that Jim's Don Carnage voice was heavily inspired by Billy Crystal's infamous impression of Fernando Lamas. Looks like it was just a voice Jim came up with on his own.
