Socrates says “If you don’t get what you want, you suffer; if you get what you don’t want, you suffer; even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer because you can’t hold on to it forever”.

Is there any steps you can take to learn discipline or do you just get it over night

    • @amyrenee1361
      @amyrenee1361 2 роки тому +17

@@andresavage9109 I have learned that it is a process. You first acknowledge something you aren't satisfied with about yourself, and you go from there. Maybe it's a consumption of a food or drug. Maybe it's a behavior you find undesirable. You first acknowledge it, and then you attempt to stop it. You will come to find, if you are being honest and observant, that there is much more attached to that thing you want to refrain from. For example, I stopped smoking marijuana about 18 months ago. I once used it for my social anxiety and my chronic physical pain. And it seemed to work, until it didn't. Eventually, I realized that it wasn't actually taking away my pain, nor my social anxiety, it was just helping me to ignore it. And it also came with some additional costs- it interfered with my ability to create and recall memories, my ability to discern, and this might sound superficial, but I didn't like looking under the influence- the red eyes, and sleepy look, I found unattractive. I also didn't like the headaches and disorienting feeling it sometimes caused. So, I was honest with myself and I saw marijuana for what it was -a distraction - and I decided to stop. In the year and half of my sobriety, I have smoked 3 or 4 times. Rather than having black and white thinking, in those few times I gave in , rather than beat myself up, I observed myself. I took note of what led up to me deciding to give in... And I also took note of the guilt I felt, and I listened to it rather than trying to make it go away. I also allowed myself to be understanding of my own limitations as a human being without judgement. Funny thing I learned a long the way is : I don't have social anxiety. I never did. I was literally socializing with people I didn't have a connection with, who I actually didn't want to be around, and marijuana helped me to tolerate them. I thought maybe it was because I didn't want to be alone that I tolerated them. But I found out I am okay with being alone, I just had poor self image, poor self esteem, and I was afraid to make friends with people I liked because I thought I was unlikeable. This is just a glimpse into some of the things that came to light in this process. You have to trust in the process. And it's in the mistakes, it's in the process, that you discover the healing, the magic, the self love, the truth of who you are.
If you think you can snap your fingers and become completely disciplined over night, you are doing yourself a disservice. We are more complex, more complicated creatures than our rational mind gives us credit for. Just imagine all the "gods" that would be walking the Earth if we could just decide to be something and then become that overnight!
I've also come to realize there is a force - call it Spirit, call it God, call it Tao- the name doesn't matter, but there is something in our environment that helps guide us if we pay attention. Don't become hyper-focused on achievement. Set your intentions, set your goals, and don't worry too much about the means of accomplishing them. At the end of the day, I realized my wanting to stop using marijuana had nothing to do with what I thought about the marijuana itself. Marijuana can be good and bad, the context matters. I had set an intention to be healthy. And life has led me on my way to better health- mental, physical, spiritual. Marijuana was the training wills (pun). Now I'm riding without them. Marijuana had it's time in my life, that time is now over.
When we find discipline hard, it is usually a resistance to change, and where there is resistance, there is something unresolved within you. Something wants to get your attention before you move on, so to speak . What ever you are struggling with has a lesson for you, and it's up to you to understand what it is. I have found these lessons to be like Russian dolls, there are layers to the learning. Life is very efficient, and you must understand that you are exactly where you are meant to be. Although you want to move forward, you will experience the same things until you listen, understand, and receive the wisdom necessary to move forward .
The best way to achieve discipline is not through hard work and resistance of the external factors, but through understanding the internal factors that are leading you to those behaviors. Saying "this is bad, I won't do it anymore" isn't sufficient in getting you to stop . Even if you stop that one specific behavior, you will resort to expressing it in another form. Because again, it isn't the external thing that is the problem. The problem, so to speak, is something within you. And get this, you're not going to figure it out by just trying to use your mind. You will only project what you think it is, not what it actually is . The roots will be revealed in the process. We often think the destination is the gold, but it is the journey that bestows the treasures. Best of wishes on your journey. 🌺

I feel that mastering self control is the key to true happiness. Almost everything around us give us pleasure and ultimately dopamine, which after the lack of it, makes us "sad".
Only by self control, one is able to reflect upon his/her actions and be more resilient in life.

How to master self control by Socrates:
    1. Beeing in control of Bodily desires..because they distract us and affect our capacity of reasoning.
2.Being Just..is needed to get your three parts of your Soul (Reason,Spirit, Apettite) in balance.
3.Knowing yourself.. to recognise weakness thus you can manage it.

I am a man walking 5 dogs on 5 leashes...one dog is Sex, one is Anger, one is Appetite, one is Fear, and one is Greed. They pull me, but I have trained them to obey me. I love them, because each dog saved my life, multiple times, on an evolutionary timeline.

By simply conversing with others, asking questions, and hearing their answers like Socrates once did, one often finds that great wisdom can arise from ostensibly inconsequential conversations. In the very least, conversing with a plethora of different people will provide some insights you would not be aware of if you choose instead to forsake conversing with them.

Yet in another book it recalls his dialogue with Diotima (who I now believe was his Spirit Guide?), who tells him that in controlling his passions he's not doing something as wise as he thinks...
She says that in actuality what its doing is keeping him from his true godlike self.
So she actually encouraged him to engage in his passions so as to be free from them.

      Practice this daily -
      Using your belly to breathe.
Silently Exhale out your nose for 15 seconds slowly & get all the air out (pull belly in)
(Relax belly) Silently Inhale for 15 seconds slowly when full hold briefly and repeat process.
Always do it in a controlled manner.
Work your way up to 30 seconds on both the in & out breathes.
Do it for 10-15mins at first then when your good at it for as long as you want.
Do it in the morning 15 mins and evening 15 mins .
During the day or any time you feel an emotion or a problem arises start to take in a few of these breathes (silently)the practice is perfected when you can stay calm not matter what.
You can also test yourself by putting yourself in a situation that would normally bother you but only when you feel the benefits of this practice.
Been doing it for 30 years it's never let me down just practice and you'll be fine.

I am here, Socrates, the Greek.
I knew that you thought of me and I was attracted by your thought. If such spirit is in rapport with you or has a similar soul quality; the soul condition is the great medium of attraction.
I have been with you before, and there is a rapport growing out of your soul qualities. I am now a believer in the Christian doctrine of the soul’s immortality, and in the teachings of Jesus as to the way to obtain the Divine Love of the Father, as you are, and, hence, our qualities of soul are similar.
I am now a follower of the Master and believe in his Divine mission on earth, although he had not come to earth when I lived. After I became a spirit I realized my belief in the continuity of life after death, and lived in the spirit world a great many years after Jesus came before I learned and believed his larger truth of immortality.
Of course, when I taught I had only a hope which was almost a certainty that I should continue to live through all eternity, but I had no other foundation for that belief than the deductions from my reasoning powers and the observations of the workings of nature.
I had heard of the visitations of the spirits of the departed, but had never had any personal experiences in that direction, but I readily believed it to be true.
My conviction of the truth of a future continuance was so strong that it amounted to a certainty, and hence when I died, I comforted Plato and my other friends and disciples, by telling them that they must not say that Socrates will die but rather that his body will die; his soul will live forever in fields Elysian. They believed me, and Plato afterwards enlarged on my belief.
And Socrates did not die, but as soon as his breath left the body, which was not very painful even though the fatal hemlock did its work sure and quickly, he went into the spirit world a living entity, full of the happiness that the realizations of his beliefs gave him.
My entrance into the spirit world was not a dark one, but full of light and happiness, for I was met by some of my disciples who had passed over before me and who had progressed very much in the intellectual development. I then thought that my place of reception was the heaven of good spirits, for there were good spirits to meet me and carry me to my home. I was then possessed of what I thought that I was in the home of the blessed; and I continued…

So true that the Great Masters in history are in agreement, men put them in conflict. These same teachings you will find from Buddha, Jesus (Gnostic Christ..that were exterminated), Krishna, Gandhi etc in their corresponding time.
Like David R. Hawkins said “ Be passionate about God, not religion “, in other words look inside you, not outside you if you want to find true wisdom and happiness.

I agree. But we must realize that our desires are mostly beyond our control. Some people are more prone to addictions of all kind then others. If Socrates was true we would live happily until death, but we do not. We are not able to keep our thinking under rational control.

This is true. When you are selfish and unjust. You are not in control and are more unhappy and share misery wherever you go. I think narcissists are superficially focused on just being rich. Creating wealth and being rich and focusing on financial goals is not a sign of narcissism. Rich people don't take advantage of people. If an economy grows. It benefits all of us.

I know Socrates is a much more intelligent man that I am, but in my experience the unjust love much more enjoyable and peaceful lives than the just. People who pursue worldly pleasures tend to only have issues that are menial (and often contrived by the unjust just for the sake of the “excitement” of having some form of suffering). Not saying that being unjust is the correct path, but I do believe, on this Earth at least, it’s the most beneficial for an individual human being.

4:10 i can tell you if realy try to avoide something like sex and other good experiences for your body you will also hurt your soul and get sick in multi ways. Its a wrong belive that those things disctract you from beeing happy, You cant just do things for what you think is your soul and you also cant just do things only for your body to get good feelings, you balance your life, its all connected so you cant just concentrate your behaviors on one thing.
