I'm convinced some people don't like flavor in their commentary. Honestly some commentators be doing way too much yapping
That Kel chick is like an auctioneer. She needs a little coaching from the boys. Her commentary is good, and I really think females make great commentators, but she needs to take a Xanax or something before going on stream.

jorges commentary in the junebug set was atrocious full stop, voice breaking every second, some of the worst bias ive ever seen in commentary, and fucking breaking out into tears after junebug won??? Grown ass man acting like that he deserves to get shit for that.

100% agree the bad moments that Jorge have are horrible. Glad you played that Game 1 clip of Junebug v Joshman because it gives necessary context.
And I still dont get why Walt gets shit on when in that clip, my opinion is that he provides good energy and excitement for seeing Junebug take Game 1.
The cool part of Scar & Toph was the balance between game knowledge, hype & professionalism. When they were on comms it felt like watching NHL, NFL, NBA with the quality of commentary. And a lot of the OGs, including yourself, HMW, etc also reflect that style as well.
The new melee commentary feels a bit watered down. Jorge just sounds like someone handed him a mic and told him to say whatever he wants. It doesn't feel like esports or a professional sports commentator at all. It feels like handing a streamer the mic and letting them say shit. Its mad annoying. Everyone I know mutes his commentary. Walt isn't bad but he tries to match the hype of Jorge which reflects badly bc Jorge takes it too far. We all understand they have a bias for Junebug for example, but the way they get reminds me of someone standing behind me while Im playing a set and screaming hyped up for my opponent. Thats the vibe a lot of others have as well. Which is OKAY, in doses, at the right volumes, without being a dick, but not ALL the time.

I'll agree, but lets be real, in the later years Toph got...ugh... I almost felt he was the character that is portrayed in South Park, that PC Principal guy. It was awful and draining to watch and listen to. Whilst Scar was, as always (IMO), priestine..

I actually don’t mind Kels when she’s on the mic with someone lowkey/conversational like EE. It’s when she gets into e-sports mode that it’s rough, same with Haz. Honestly I think melee comms are a lot better than Ult’s, both more knowledgeable/play by play and less cringey

I understand that jorge went overboard but if im completely honest, I was watching those matches live and I was hyped for the DK run and it did not bother me at all, I was excited to see a commentator loosing his mind and it did not bother me at all. If it did bother me, I could very easily just mute the stream and watch the match myself, its not a big deal. The commentary is optional to me and its there if you wanna hear it. It was a hype moment and I had fun watching it. Again I undestand he went over the line for some people probably but in the moment, I didnt even notice and i enjoyed the moment for what it was.

The thing for me is that Jorge does this constantly and talks over co-commentators. The fact that muting a stream is a proposed solution is insane, at this point I'd appreciate a restream that only has game audio. Jorge doesn't have to leave, or stop commentating, or anything drastic like that. I just wish I could enjoy watching my favorite video game without having to hear him screaming at the top of his lungs over a dashback f smash

Don't know if this was mentioned, but another reason Jorge had beef in the chat that flowed over to Twitter was because he'd kicked off an Ult commentator who'd tried to sub in for Junebug for Top 8. Understand why he did it, called in a better fit for the block (Walt), but came off a little rude - chat was saying 'LET HIM BACK ON,' 'apologize,' 'why doesn't Jorge leave' etc before the Junebug set even began - felt like it started off on the wrong foot, AND he'd already lost his voice earlier from screaming for Junebug in the crowd.

TK, you and EE have found a balance. Thing is, everyone is out to market themselves and it's clear as day. Jorge consistently screaming after being criticized many times shows he clearly is doing it for himself.
Tbh jorge getting criticized for screaming is kinda dumb. He does it because he loves the game and because the shit that happened is hype as fuck. Like TK said, the melee community just hates commentators who get hype... they also hate commentators who never get hype, or commentators that aren't funny, or commentators that are funny, or commentators who don't talk about the game, or commentators who do talk about the game

There's being hype for the moment and then there's being loud for the obligation of feeling like you have to be loud. Jorge was the latter.
nlg, I've always hated Haz's weird sounds in comms, but I understand that's on me and has nothing to do with how the community sees that as a whole, so I can understand to some degree, that being said the main reason why I love japanese comms is because how hype and screamy it gets even if sometimes it makes absolutely no sense or we're watching Sparg0 about to beat Tea and the comms is just a bunch of guys screaming "DANGER" and "JUSTICE" over and over during the last stock, it's hilarious.
Could also be a contributing factor is that you don't know what Japanese comms are saying

I think you’re spot on with Jorge. I actually love that he’s hype but if that hype means he can’t even speak then maybe a public speaking role isn’t the best fit. Just my two cents.
On a more positive note I personally think the smash games are blessed with a lot of superb commentators. Just off the top of my head: Scar, Coney, EE, HMW, Max, you(Tk), Toph, Walt, Vikki, Vish, Virum… all professional, entertaining, and knowledgeable.. I even appreciate the different knowledge styles, I enjoy Walt dropping a crazy statistic, but I also enjoy HMW explaining how the community’s perception of something has evolved over time.
The only commentators who make me auto-mute or turn off the stream are:
Hazmat - talks too much about himself and has a tendency to drag on.
Kels - Tons of words, no substance, quite loud.
Wisely - very pedantic, dragssss on.
To be fair, Jorge was matching the energy of the crowd. The stream can’t really hear that though.
Genuinely could not fucking stand Jorge's "commentary"; dude was just shrieking at every interaction with a raspy voice, provided next to no analytical value; shit made me leave the stream.

I was more bothered that it sounded like Jorge was riding Mango's junk every time he commentated any of his matches. But I guess he was supposed to be the one talking about what Mango was doing.
To be fair... Every commentator rides on Mango, scar and toph have done so, hmw and D1 have in the past.

i hate how melee treats commentators. walt is the antichrist of the community for literally 0 reason because i'm guessing people don't like to see commentators actually look into the details of the game?? like what kind of mindset is that and then people turn around and say "i hate people who know nothing about the game" like people just don't know what they want. i think the only problem was that jorge got pretty loud but it was winners semis with a donkey kong vs a very good fox player so idk i just don't see it.
Wait, really? he usually gets a lot of likes for his videos, and I personally love that he covers top 8's at majors since I don't always feel like watching the full sets sometimes.
@@666blaziken yes definitely, it's probably just a loud small amount of players but i've definitely seen people on twitch and twitter complain about walt on commentary. from what i know his videos are pretty well received though.
I think the main criticism of Walt is sometimes he is so analytical that he just kinda guesses certain things as if he is 100% sure, which of course Melee players don't like because a lot of them know what is actually going on. Otherwise, I think he's improved a lot and is one of the only people really worth mentioning in the current era, that wasn't established already
Gotta say something I really respect about these videos is the nuance in your thoughts/opinions. Whether it be petty drama like people not liking commentary, or serious allegations, you always get into the actual info and give it genuine thought, which is refreshing to see after scrolling through twitter and witnessing the guilty until proven innocent, hivemind/mob mentality that's so prevalent on there (and the internet in general tbh). As someone who's considered competing, it's scary to see how easily you can become a villain in the community's eyes.

Jorge and Junebug are very close friends so I can understand the excitement he felt to see one of his close friends doing so well against a very skilled player. Also to see a character that has been considered bad for 20 years do well in a modern tournament can be very emotional for some people who are very invested into the game.
I liked the commentary in top 16 from Walt and (I’m sorry I don’t know his name) because it kinda felt like Walt had everything under control and he was really analyzing the positions and the other commentator was going absolutely crazy, I liked it because there was like a balance between the two of actual analysis and just straight hype
I don’t follow smash but you won me over when you did SC6 commentary and always happy to hear you in other games.
Ive been to locals where a commentator said "oh, peach pulled a toad out of her dress... I wonder what else is under that dress" ever since then, i have yet to see any "bad commentary" top that moment.
Later on he was crying cuz he was so proud of his friend Jubebug. For me, that emotion, is hype!! It’s real! It’s unique! It’s funny!
People just love to hate and have become entitled viewers now. They like to just cry and whine like little babies. The commentary is what it is. People should just go with the flow.

i am not gonna sugarcoat it. it is jorge only, get him off the mic. simple as that. no, he is neither a bad person because of this, nor is he less worthy than any other human being. it is no "hate", i do not hate him. his commentary is just plain bad. it is like a stranger next to you who drank way too much shouting in your ear constantly on an event. annoying. i am bad at many things, i could name 100 things in which i am probably worse than jorge. but not commentating ssbm. i would do better.

I think some of the complaining about the melee commentary also has to do with the standard the community holds them to. Melee already had some super good commentators in the past and ultimate is in a really good spot right now with people like TK and others

I think it’s also important to remember that when some of the most egregious “questionable” choices for Jorge’s commentary happened, junebug was supposed to be *in the booth* doing commentary for top 8 but was having the run of his life.
Jorge really delivered on the level of near camp with how much he was trying to hype up somewhat standard punishes from
Junebug, but with how the crowd was I’m sure he just kind of reflexively fed off of it and didn’t filter himself. It’s not a great look but it’s not the end of the world or a need for any indictment of commentators as a whole, I felt like the roster they had was pretty damn good
I think everyone's always looking for something to be mad at. Obviously some commentators are better than others, but I've only felt annoyed when folks can't stop riding Mang0, or need to pretend Steve or Sonic are fun to watch.

I felt spoiled with all the great commentary from round 1 pools all the way to grand finals. Appreciate the job everybody did. Can things improve? I’m sure. I hope we are giving healthy feedback to such great people that are giving so much to us the community

Personally don't mind flavor (jokes) in commentary and usually like them getting hype but I do find it annoying when commentators get so far off topic that is like "wtf can you just talk about what's happening in the game and not your random thoughts."

As someone in the crowd of Supernova, I really enjoyed listening to the commentary especially because they occasionally had it muted. The times where the commentary popped off were also the times when the audience did too. The audience at this event was the loudest at any event that I have seen, and in some ways the commentary matched that energy. This event was the most fun I’ve had in a while, and at this point people are just making drama for the sake of drama

smash commentary is so good during top 8s, alot of commenators have personality, knowledge and hype. but anything lower than top 8 smash commentary is way too filled with off topic discussion, reciting memes, talking about tier list and past games. If smash commentators could stick to actually talking about the match at hand its amazing, but the community lets the off topic commentary slide too much . i see people defend it with "its fun to me" "not everything has to be professional''. ive seen full games go by with not a single sentence said about the matches on screen. no other esports i watch gets off topic as smash bros
I haven't used Twitter in about a month and I coincidentally didn't find anything off-putting about commentary this time. Just a thought (plus I was watching on Larry's yt stream which has barely any toxicity if at all)

Originally I was going to try to be one of the few that convince you to be a Melee commentator despite the negative crowd, but after hearing your experience of criticism (and just blatant hate) I get you.
I watched the 64 combo contest from supernova, the first thing I noticed was how bad the commentary was. Especially if you watch any of the older ones, and one of the two castors didn’t know anything about the game. Jorge shouldn’t do commentary if he doesn’t know the game. On top of that Walt and Jorge felt conflicting in their commentary, they did not mesh well. Although I do like Walt’s commentary.
Honestly it might just be that the crowd is barely audible so the yelling sounds out of place on stream. If the crowd sounded louder on stream I don’t think it would sound as jarring. I agree the negativity is out of control though, and I don’t want to live in a world where people are shamed for getting excited about a video game.
Jorge’s voice is literally going hoarse it’s a terrible listening experience.

I cant speak to the reality of being a black man in this space, im certain when you see these wild criticisms that are thrown around toward you and less so towards the white casters, it must rub you in a certain way. As a white viewer, though, it does feel alienating to say the guy just must be racist. I dont perceive you as a person who holds biases like that toward other races. I really appreciate your videos and your level-headed commentary pertaining to things both within the game and the real world.
I guess i project myself into that random commenters position and question if i would also be called racist if i had a criticism of a black commentator or creator. Idk. Just a thought that is intended to be a constructive criticism. Most of what i have disagreed with you on in past takes has had to do with feeling like white people are being painted with a very broad brush that is unfair and not representative of an entire group. I said my dialect probably does not resonate with him. never claimed he doesn't like black people or that anyone who would rather a more caucasian dialect is but what I'm pointing out is just because i'm not giving you hard frame data or statistics and numbers and shit all the time does not mean I do not know the game or that i don't analyze situations. theres been so many calls that I've mad in this space that happen literally right after I saw it. I also don't want to go heavy into numbers and frame data and shit because i'm commentating for a wider audience than just smash nerds who live and breathe this game.
