With the lyric, "today is the greatest day," some listeners misinterpreted this as a hopeful song, when it was just the opposite. Billy Corgan said: "I was really suicidal. I just thought it was funny to write a song that said today is the greatest day of your life because it can't get any worse."
It's like a sarcastic song.
Spot on!
Definitely, most suicidal people will seem happy in the days and weeks before trying because they feel they have found the obvious solution to everything. This song highlights it perfectly, it sounds happy but is about the darkest thoughts a person can have.
What a great song, I love it! I put it into my "Shellshocked Radio - Recommendations" List: ua-cam.com/video/OfZjxA_g2X8/v-deo.html Very well done!
Heavy
"so heavy... but so light" - kinda sums up a lot of what made Smashing Pumpkins so unique back then. Some people definitely didn't get it.
"Today is the greatest" was sarcasm. He was in a really dark place, and suicidal at the time. The contrast of heavy music and light vocals was intentional. A lot of people misinterpreted it as a positive song.
can be read it as make the most of it now rather than wait till later aka cease the day. The tunes pulled him out of his darkness at the time
@@altruismfirst6489 he has stated in many interviews that it was a sarcastic song. He was having the worst day of his life and sarcastically said "today is the greatest."
I find it absolutely hilarious when newlyweds use the song at their Wedding. And yes, they have.
only actual fans of the band would know the true meaning/story of the song.
was that when courtney came sniffing around
I thought it was about overcoming writer's block? Can't remember where I first heard that, but for years I took it as gospel.
Arguably the best band of the 90s, and in my opinion they were. I'm a child of the 60s and 70s but ultimately the 90s is my favorite music decade and SP are the 90s band that speaks the most to me, though there are a LOT of other bands that are only a whisker behind them. It was a prolific decade before everyone just started stealing music and before digital production tools made talent optional.
Born in 85 here and grew up with SP, (but also raised with a lot of incredible music from the 60's and 70's) and I completely agree. To me, the 90's were the last decade of truly great music.
If you love this sound, and want to hear some truly astonishing songwriting, check out the album "Feels Like You"(2019) from the band Whirr. That album has gotten me through my days at least once a week ever since it dropped, and to my ears it feels like a genuine sanctuary. That said, Pumpkins definitely were one of the greats, ans Siamese Dreams, as well as Adore have been with me for some time now too...
“pink ribbon scars that never forget, i tried so hard to cleanse these regrets” fuckin poetry
Lex just described one of my best friends in the 90s in high school! And she loved this album!
You guys definitely are pounding the 90's. Siamese Dreams is an amazing album. Soma is my favorite off of it, however, Hummer, Silver F**k and Chrrub Rock are fantastic songs off of this album.
Cherub rock has been done. A reaction to the full version of Drown or The Aeroplane Flighs High would also be cool.
Rocket
@@thegoodrevtim rocket alternative version from the MCIStour, its on youtube, still have the bootleg vhs of that concert, amazing version.
Geek USA was always my favourite on the album there isn't a bad song on there, one of those rare albums you can't skip a track.
Okay, listen guys. To me, Siamese Dream is one level with Jaggee Little Pill, Blood, sugar, sex, magik, Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast, Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance, Motley Crue - Too Fast for Love and WASP Inside the Electric Circuit. That should give you an idea or where I rate this album.
Man this song really brings me back to great times in my twenties, where has the time gone...
As they say, time flies like an arrow… but fruitflies like a banana.
You gotta watch out for those time flies. They really sneak up on you.
I always understood this song to be about someone who survived a suicide attempt (pink ribbon scars)....classic example of juxtaposition of an upbeat sound about dark subject matter
In a way, it is. Not an active attempt (afaik), but Billy Corgan has said that he was in a very dark place in life and heavily contemplating it when he wrote this song.
This song immediately takes me back to the mid-90s and how the world was back then. By now rock was starting to shift away from the Seattle Grunge to more "alternative" rock and the Pumpkins were selling out shows and adored by the new goth kids.
Lex is literally an alien; sent to earth to use the most random collection of sensations and experiences to synthesize an almost perfect representation of legit emotional responses.
fukkin send it.
I think that perfectly sums up and distinguishes the Smashing Pumpkins: heavy but light. Glad you finally "got" one of their songs.
This whole album rocked. I loved it in high school
Tonight Tonight is essential Pumpkins listening, it takes *that* soundscape you like to whole new levels. It's a beautiful sounding song.
Fun fact, singer Billy Corgan is a hulking 6'3" giant. If you liked this, check out "Tonight, Tonight."
On the Works of Spike Jonze DVD, the Beastie Boys do a commentary track and mention being on the Lolapalooza tour and playing basketball before the shows, and Billy Corgan dominated everyone even though he was wearing combat boots and polyester pants. And then it devolved into a story about Adrock starting a fight with Guided by Voices.
I feel so lucky dude when the teenager during the time that this kind of music was coming out. It was a real special time, especially if you are young.
This band goes between chill and a little hard
This is a chill one
This song was officially released as a single in 1993. I was 17 at the time. I'm still a fan to this day.
People don't often talk about Billy Corgan's solo work.
Check out the song Mina Loy from the album TheFutureEmbrace. I was hooked on that song for a while. That album incorporated a bit of shoegaze style.
Mina Loy is brilliant.
Same age. I hear their hits on radio and they still sound like they could be current songs. Easily.
I still remember being 17-18 years old around 93-94, tripping on mushrooms, and sitting in the middle of a field where we had set up a bunch of band equipment and blasting this through the PA. It was a beautiful summer day in North Carolina, with blue skies, and this song blasting so loud that I could feel it in my soul. Almost 30 years later, every time I think about the greatest days of my life, this is one of the moments that is still embedded in my brain.
Extra props for wearing a pumpkins shirt. We are doing a Top 50 SP songs series on our channel. SP FOREVER!
Another 90's Soul Jam!
Loud Quiet Loud. It was a classic 90's theme started by the Pixies, presented by Nirvana, perfected by the Smashing Pumpkins.
TODAY IS THE GREATEST!......hard, heavy lyrics to convey the emotion/liberation of taking control of your life❤
Vocally, he tends to emphasize by getting sharper rather than louder, cutting through the music rather than going above it.
Yeah until you hear Bodies or X.Y.U lol. He goes nuts on those tracks
Yooo she got a Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness t-shirt! :o love that album to death as well as The Smashing Pumpkins altogether lol. Tonight Tonight is another amazing song that has a unique but awesome vibe when you watch the official video
if you want to check out what is quite possibly their heaviest and honestly lyrically creepiest song, check out the song called X.Y.U. smashing pumpkins have such an interesting range of sound between light and heavy, but X.Y.U. is the heaviest they go, i think
Who knew Brad would get so confused. Could be on loop through all reactions👊🤣🤣
This song brings me a lot of nostalgia from my years in high school in those wonderful years 90ts. More precisely from 93 this song
Looking at your list of recent videos, you guys are on a tear with the great songs... helps I grew up in the 90s.
Lmao by the title of the thumbnail, I thought they were reacting to the song "Perfect" by Smashing Pumpkins... Also I'd love them to react to "Disarm"
Brad didn't pause it becasue Pumpkins is good music. It draws you in! lol
90s music where bi-polar became art.
Great analysis Lex!
I like when the videos end with "I don't know" then it flows right into the outro song
One of the few songs I can recall hearing for the first time, where I was, who I was with. Must have been one of the first times it came over the radio in my little town when it was released.
Love this,it brings me back to the mid 90’s
This is true, there’s videos of Billy Corgan talking about it on UA-cam: he was going to end his life on a Friday. Friday came along and he didn’t “have it in him”. He ended up writing two songs that day, “Today” and “Disarm”. Two monumental songs. His despair ended up helping thousands and thousands of people dealing with mental illnesses.
brad' s skating explanation is funny.
The thing about Brad's pausing songs is that his left arm going forward always telegraphs when he wants to start pausing the song.
Love SP. Made me laugh Brad saying he didn't know were to pause lol, I could see him waiting for like a break or something lol.
My brother-in-law worked for the bassist doing work around her house at one time
Great tune. Great band. The 90s always has my heart
I'm not a huge SP fan but objectively speaking, Siamese Dream is one of the best rock albums of the 90's. I highly recommend DIsarm
I am a huge SP fan (and Mellon Collie is my personal favorite), but objectively speaking, you're absolutely right. Siamese Dream is one of the essential 90's albums that EVERYONE should hear.
The "gish" and "Siamese Dream" albums were terrific, and they had good music following, but I'm not sure they've dated as well as some of their contemporaries. This was a great single.
I feel like Siamese Dream is the perfect alternative rock record, but Mellon Collie is in a class of its own. Say what you want about it being a little bloated but it still holds up really well to this day.
Everybody loves Lex’s smile. Goofy chick.
Siamese Dreams...one of the greatest albums ever.
This song always brings me up!
This song came out when I got divorced, some how the pumpkins got me thru it!
Really? You know it's sarcasm, right?
@@metalmark1214 you can't spot all sarcasm I suppose...
"1979" is the song you need to hear from them!
I believe 1979 was the first pumpkins song they reacted to. 👍
Sing this to the rhythm of Today ...."This couple are the greatest reactionists a-live!" 😂😂😂😂👍
By the way this song is meant to be ironic as its actually really dark even though it sounds happy and uplifting. The song is litteraly about contemplating suicide.
Great rock pick! Thanks for bringing the Smashing punkins. You've got to listen to Disarm. The song tells a powerful story. Billy Corgan wrote from his own experience. Its a beautiful, sad and powerful song.
'Zero' is literally their best song...DO IT!
Hi guys, enjoying your reactions, keep it up!
Tonight tonight is one of my fav Smashing Pumpkins songs and videos.
For a second when I read the title I thought you guys listened to the song “Perfect” by The Smashing Pumpkins. You should listen to that song too! It’s so good. You’d enjoy it! ❤️🙂
It's hard to believe what drugs did to D'arcy Wretzky. Drunk driving charges, crack addiction and the whole nine yards. She looked unrecognizable in her mug shots. Sad.
This takes me back 😔❤️
Probably my all-time favorite band ever smashing pumpkins you should listen to rhinoceros by them
Yeah... vocals are a bit polarizing maybe... I guess.
Hadn't thought about it much, but I guess when I was a kid, it did take me a bit to get used to 'em... now that I think about it. Thing is, they're soft a lot of the time, especially on this album (more screaming on their 3rd album), because that's sort of one of the themes of the record. "Siamese Dream" A lot of the songs have a dream-like quality, and the whispery vocals really contribute a lot to that.
Bill Corgans voice always just grows on me. I think I won't like his song the first time. A few days later I'm singing along jamming. Definitely a unique style
Love the pumpkins
very influenced by the pixies, as were everyone else in the early nineties. respect francis black.
As many have pointed out - Give The Pixies a chance. Hey - Gigantic - Debaser - Monkeys Gone to Heaven - I could go on. They have a ton of great songs. David Bowie and Kurt Cobain were fans of the Pixies. If you watch the movie Zack and Miri make a Porno "Hey" is used really well in it.
I like her vision of a fashion savvy, juicy fruit chewing '90s girl sneaking out to her boyfriend's house. "Ya know what I mean?" LOL 😂
As lex wears a pumpkins shirt lol
Pumpkins are great so many good ones
This song is a good one to learn on guitar.
I don’t think Billy Corgan ever goes back and forth in the vocals on a single song, Smashing Pumpkin songs are either like “Bodies” & “Zero” or “In The Arms Of Sleep” & “Disarm.”
This was their first release. The video was an indelible 90s "alternative/grunge" era video w/ the group fingerpainting an ice cream truck as described by Jimmy The Cab Driver: ua-cam.com/video/ePQGgAl1URg/v-deo.html And here's also Jimmy's cogent descriptions of GNR videos of the time. ua-cam.com/video/3A_g19FNh_Q/v-deo.html
Do yourselves a favor and listen to the whole album.
My favourite Smashing Pumkins song is a toss up between "Ava Adore" and "Tonight Tonight" I really wish you guys would do Ava Adore
I was doing a lot of meth & lsd when this came out so hearing it reminds me of a perception of a beautiful world
Disarm is the Pumpkins song that I think will penetrate both of your cores.
Lex is so hip
Guys, SERIOUSLY, if you like this mix of sounds and relaxing, yet somewhat driving grooves and beats, give the song "Rose Cold" by the band Whirr a try - I Think you would Really Dig it.
next SP songs to do: Disarm, Zero, Muzzle
Brad…. Perpetually confused…. But it’s Ok… It’s part of the charm of Brad and Lex…
It's his natural state, but I love him for it lol.
finally Smashing Pumpkins! I was waiiting for so long, now please react to 1979 and Tonight tonight
i love SP vibe
Nice mellon collie shirt
I would love to hear your guys thoughts on some Acid Bath, the songs Bleed me an ocean or Dead girl. Or maybe some Crowbar, or Propain, those bands are great
B. Corgan is like Dylan, it takes some time...then. ❤
Soma from this same album is one of the best songs ever, in my opinion
This entire album I listen to with my belly ☺️ - check out Hummer . Thanks for the great reaction.
I'll say it again: Brad THINKS the tune while Lex FEELS the tune. Also, you should really watch the official video for full effect.
Every band is required to have a ballad. lol Great song!
With friends kicked back !
Fun music !
I'm telling you...Jellybelly!
I love these videos, but they always seem super positive. (Not a bad thing) but just curious, have they done a song and just hated it?
Also, what song is played over the ending?
They were the softer of the metal more new wave rock with a dash of distortion to make it edgy but nevertheless it was for the regular suburbanites kids just after the metal surge and before grunge. More of a late 70's earlier 80's not heavy subgroup.
I find it so weird how you guys find this music strange to your ears. I was 21 and in the Navy when grunge and Pumpkins and all this great music came out. It’s the soundtrack to my early 20s and it’s so normal to me.
Billy Corgen wrote this song on the day he set to kill himself. He realized when he couldnt go through with it that this was the greatest day of his life. He lived.
I'll be recording a podcast episode anchored in the whole album tomorrow. Peep the YKWIM hat in the background of episodes two and three.
Brad & Lex, represent!
That's too cool, man lol!
This is a amazing album!!!
I think that's a record before brad paused 😳
Today is the greatest day= to spread positivity! Happy Vibes!! Some people don't get The Smashing Pumpkins, but I love 'em
A fav is 1979
They actually have a song called Perfect that you should listen to.
Loved this song!
Cherub Rock is next 🤟🏼
