You call him Xyris, I call him Snekusar. Edit: Also another solid Craterhoof substitute is Seshiro the Anointed. Pumps all snakes +2/+2 and anytime a snake deals combat damage to a player you may draw a card.
Here's my completely unsolicited suggestion: Vince, you make amazing content. You obviously spent a good deal of time on this video and it's awesome to watch. What would be really cool is to see you throw together a deck list (even using affiliate links to card seller websites so you can reap some of that fat profit) of the "expensive," "not quite expensive but not budget," and "budget" builds you just described and link them in the description. Again, thanks for the awesome content!
The same way he punts Lukka because he can't find a 2nd red source. Didn't read the second half of Oath of Nissa saying you can spend mana as though it was mana of any color.
The reason cards like Natural Connection is included is for the synergy with Kalamax. They filled the deck out with instants that do those kinds of things, so at least players can get familiar with those cards and what they can do. Not saying it's necessarily the right call, but there is a reasonable logic to it.
One of the things I love in your videos is the editing: the little banners/signs/graphics and the background noises (like the pricing on the Cradle and yes, me puking too) make your videos even more enjoyable and fun to watch! Keep it up V aka PK on the internet. ;)
Fun fact: I opened one of those back in time and never used it for any deck. After Xyris spoiler I knew what it was for. the whole long time it was waiting.
pretty sure its price shot up after these decks were spoiled. plus even though it had loads of reprints back then, its been a hot minute since the last one so finding mint copies is hard. im sure someone has been sitting on theirs in a dusty box for 15+ years and just made mad dollar
I've got a Temur wheels deck that currently runs Kydele and Kraum. Xyris will absolutely replace them, and the deck will get a number of tweaks and upgrades. Ludevic is also a great include. And Edric.
dragon mage+aqueous form+blade of selves for crazy discarding/redrawing shenanigans, citadel of pain+storm cauldron and/or quicksilver fountain+power conduit for a mean group hug build (especially when you throw in artifacts that punish opponents for full hands) and draw extra cards effecting cards, or unnatural selection+spirit mirror+cryptolith rites for boardwiping all opponent creatures.
Much love for the "Showed you my huge board presence, please respond". Decimator and End Raze, along with Ilharg and Nessian Boar are affectionately known as Operation Big Pig Plan in my player circles. Thanks for mentioning them
Natural Connection is in the deck because of how it synergizes with the face card, since Kalamax only copies instants.Though the obvious criticism there is you typically want to ramp before your commander hits the battlefield, not afterwards.
This sort of feels like a Locust God deck with the added benefit of green for a shitload of ramp. Love the format of this video as well, makes me want to buy this precon and do these upgrades.
Honestly I'm starting to like that there's a few genuinely different wheel Commanders. Nekusar, Xyris, and Shark+Boy. All take the U/R core, and then let you take the same theme in different ways depending on if you want to use White, Black, or Green.
Missed/left out recommended inclusions: Timespiral (expensive but one of the best wheels in existence) Echo of Eons Wheel of Fate Reforge the Soul Triumph of the Hordes Kydele chosen of kruphix Breath of Fury (my all time favorite criminally underrated and underplayed budget finisher in any token deck that includes red)
My record for snakes with Xyris online is 77 snakes before people scooped. That is what happens when you have cryptolith rites and Concordant crossroads on the table, and then you just drew and drew into more wheels and timetwister-like effects.
Loved the video Vince. I think Xyris is going to be a lot of fun to play and defintly has some explosive potential. Green and red both have a lot of payoffs for going wide and in the categories you mentioned have a lot of options. But blue does open up some unique things. Like playing Stasis and Opposition. Stasis with a constant effect that draws more cards and a way to turn creatures into mana means you can pay for it all the time. And opposition let's you leverage your board to slow down opponents until you can find your win cons. Also if you are avoiding being naughty in the video. I will do my best to avoid being naughty in the comment section. Lol.
Nice video! Xyris was also my favourite new commander from this set, but I think I would build him in a more Group Hug style. But of course, I'd still have Purphoros + a few wheels just to end games when they drag out a bit ;)
This new commander fkn slaps!! Tried it this week end..the mighty wheel deck was already built and was just waiting for its master! Far from disapointed!!
So I was going for some kind of weird discard cantrip value deck with curiosity effects, but I think I accidentally turned brallin and shabraz into a storm deck instead. Oops.
very cool, ive never played edh, i want to try though.. and i bought literally one mystery booster pack and pulled that purphoros! i might as well try this one!
Do it... In fact, you COULD run Purphoros as Commander. It's not easy being mono-Red, but there are some decks out there that pull it off rather well. Also, Red makes a fair few bodies, and I've faced a few variants of the Purph already... He SUCKS to fight when he gets rolling.
I am excited to pick this thing up and put Pako and Haldan as the commanders. They just seem like great card advantage and Pako seems to grow very quickly. Plus they are cute af.
I know that when I say I want better reprints in these things Im referring to maybe like a handful of cards in the 5-10 dollar range in each deck. Not super chase cards for the price gouging reasons you discussed.
Potential Additions: Forced Fruition: Whenever an opponent casts a spell, that player draws 7 cards. That's 7 snakes per spell. $11.22 Seshiro the Anointed: Other snakes gain +2/+2, and may draw you a card if they deal combat damage. $7.00 Kashi-Tribe Elite: Legendary Snakes gain Shroud. $0.62 Inner Calm, Outer Strength: Target creature gains +X/+X, where X is the number of cards in your hand. $0.19 Inner Fire: Add (R) for each card in your hand. $0.34 Mikokoro, Center of the Sea: 2T: Each player draws a card. $3.4+ Sakashima the Imposter & Spark Double: Legendary duplication without legend rule. $23.74 + $6.48 Sasaya, Orochi Ascendant: One-sided mana flare. $2.29 Myojin of Life's Web & Seeing Winds: Takes advantage of the large hand size created by the commander. $7.12 + $3.87 Nature's Will: Combat damage you deal to an opponent untaps your lands. $14.45
I picked up the Mardu precon myself, but I booted Jirina Kudro out of the director's chair and instead am building around Silvar and Trynn! It was surprisingly tricky to come up with combos that work with Silvar, being that he can only sacrifice humans But as fate would have it, I was able to find one that works: Fiend Hunter + Angel of Glory's Rise [or Karmic Guide] I also included the Karmic Guide/Reveillark duo, as well as Luminous Broodmoth and a pair of undying creatures P.S. Tainted Remedy + Beacon of Immortality = chef's kiss
I ended up buying a copy of each of the new commander products. After play testing them overall i think Kalamax is by far the better one since it has more interaction than the others. That being said eventually I'm gonna take apart the other decks but Kalamax is the one I plan on upgrading with more efficient cards.
While not the most budget friendly, a phyrexian altar + mana echoes can do wonders for making mana - especially if The Locust God is factored in and you have snakes and insects piling up.
They did put kodamas reach and cultivate in the counters and mutate deck and the Jeskai got a bunch of signets but these are definitely better than last years
Vince, have you heard of the card Words of War? 3 mana, 2R, enchantment. 1: The next time you would draw a card this turn, Words of War deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
I have build him a couple of weeks ago, printed the cards as proxies and... yeah... Xyris is BONKERS!!! :-D Especially with Shared Animosity.... Although I - on purpose - did not include Tremors and Purphoros, the deck's SICK!!!!!! You gonna build it for a future EDH and Chill????? That'd be awesome!
I'm upgrading 3 of the 5, this one I'm going full storm, ontrimi I'm diving headfirst into unblockable mutating clones, and I'm doing a token blitz cycle build, all 3 using the facecards as the singer.
Haven't done the list for that one yet, just finished Kalamax today and slowly getting stuff together for otrimi although that list is almost done. My main idea is to focus on cycling cards that will either trigger something or cards that cycle with value while pumping tokens into play through gavi, ajani, elspeth, chandra and tibalt and using cards to either boost the tokens or change them like divine visitation
I wish each color had a staple card that was printed every set, I feel like blue would be cyclonic rift, white could be teferis protection, green could be heroic intervention or Azusa or something like that, not sure what red and black would be but I feel like these cards wouldnt be 20-30 dollars if the sets they were made for actually printed them
I’m sorry but I’m building on kalamax... with all the fork copies so I can infinite combo him, and play chandra’s ignition. Zaxara with doubling season and unbound flourishing, with all the x spells, decimator of provinces, end raze-foe runners and triumph of the hordes. Yes I am that evil
I've got an Esper unblockable tribal deck with a focus on cipher, currently headed by Sylas Renn and Tymna. I'm going to replace them with Ukkima and Cazur from the Zagoth deck (white was only really there for boardwipes anyway) and make a Sultai unblockable cipher tribal deck. It's going to be sick.
The main problem the deck has always had is that almost all of the damage I do is chip damage. Cazur makes it so that every time my unblockable bois hits someone they get bigger. I'm also running beastmaster ascension now that I have access to green (not to mention actual ramp).
Hey Vince, if you're looking for a home for those Mystery Boosters on the shelf, I can provide a safe, loving environment to even the most down-on-their-luck booster packs.
I might run am intruder alarm with that cyptolith it gets stupid. Basically just cast dudes with your other snakes and they untap every time you wheel or play a different creature.
Price gouging wouldn’t be an issue if they printed enough for demand. Look at Konami and their products, they did duel devastators that had staples in the competitive scene and flooded the market with them so hoarders wouldn’t swipe them all up, brawl was a perfect example of what wizards need to do.
Only issue I have with Xyris is he breaks the color pie. Snakes are Sultai at most, and don't belong in Red whatsoever. Otherwise he's pretty dope for K&T. Folio of Fancies, Smothering Tithe, yeah so many snakes.
Using Tayam as commander and Kaheera as companion, but really using Nethroi as a hidden commander because I'm running a "Pet Sematary" themed/pseudo Vigilance and Cat tribal. Just look at Frondland Felidar!
If you can't afford a purpheros, try out kyren negotiations. They can be just as effective, and even allow political negotiations, because people generally don't want to get hit for 21.
More effort spent on a 3 second intro than most content creators spebd on their 10 minute video and nostalgia to boot!
That means a lot to me! Thank you for noticing!
Definitely the best intro I have seen in a while.
@@PleasantKenobi switches it up for different videos, too. Of course we notice you, lovely milkbeard.

The Wilhelm for our late kitty companion was a nice touch
A solid addition that most people don't know about for Xyris: Wheel and Deal.
Fun fact: I opened one of those back in time and never used it for any deck. After Xyris spoiler I knew what it was for. the whole long time it was waiting.
Maybe I missed it but I'm disappointed there wasn't a "snaaaaaake!" Somewhere in there
The gameplay is still to come.
@@PleasantKenobi hype
I'm old and I remember when winds of change was a .50 cent bulk uncommon.

I remember that too, so I traded every single one I saw and bought the ones at my LGS years ago. Got enough to last all my deckbuilding needs forever.
Dude I did a solid double take! I have a couple of them sitting around the house and it looks like I need to flip those cards ASAP!
in europe its still arounf 5 euros. Small price to pay for a card that lets you sings a crappy Scorpions song every time you cast it.
I've got a Temur wheels deck that currently runs Kydele and Kraum. Xyris will absolutely replace them, and the deck will get a number of tweaks and upgrades. Ludevic is also a great include. And Edric.

It’s a bit more on the janky side, but I would consider some of the blue «Everybody draw more card» enchantment
The main thing this video did was reminding me of how expensive so many cards are in the US that are super cheap here in EU :D

Memory Jar would be a fun add.
4:47 from what I understand, they don't "keep pushing it" but they're rather bound to it
They keep pushing "we cant breach it".
Earthcraft would be an awesome upgrade for mana purposes too i guess.
Earthcraft made 4 wheel in the same turn prossible(5th turn) 3 wheel to find purphoros and the forth one to kill the whole table! That was a blast!
I already had snake tribal built with Seshiro with a commander. Xyris is just a spicier snake tribal commander. (With a certain God of the forge).

I like the idea of vicious shadows since you are wheeling and trying to put everyone to 7 or more cards in hand

I won turn 5 with purphorus and a wheel once it was quite satisfying
I would add the new Ominous Seas from Ikoria to the deck to take advantage of the wheels and get bigger tokens out.

Seshiro the annointed
Xyris is the one commander that spoke to me most but I worried it would be too similar to nekusar?
Xyris attacking that flying city, making snakes is basically snakes on a plane isn't it? xD
Nothing like Triumph of the Hoard to make the snakes a bit more potent.
What are your toughts about Kamahl, Fist of Krosa in this deck?
Only took 3 months to make these prices a dream
You forgot to mention Timetwister in the Wheels section;)
He did but you have to remember not everyone can buy a $2000 card of course if you can add it in.
the wheels on Xyris go round and round
I love Xyris and i love play it without the wheels because I think it's more funnier!
I didn't actually buy a deck this release, I just traded the Sultai partners and built Scooby and Shaggy with +1/+1 counters as Scooby Snacks.
