As an older person who studied classics, I didn’t view their conversations as pretentious at all. I just thought that they sounded very young. It’s very skilful how life like the characters are drawn, so that viewed from any angle, they come alive in a realistic fashion. She also makes it feel as though the story is set in a very real kind of world, where whenever Richard goes outside into it you interact realistically with a world vibrant with other people who have nothing to do with the plot.
It’s so fascinating how people in different stages of life interpret this story. I wonder myself what I will make of these characters and this world if I were to read it again at a later stage in life. Thank you for sharing!

At one point the characters were saying how annoying it was that Milton wrote Paradise Lost in English rather than Latin because English was such a restrictive language. They were pretentious.
@@miquesbookvlogs372 I read that book around 5 years ago and blew my mind and immediately became one of my favorite novels of all time (along with Crime and Punishment by the way). I am 49 now and those characters and that story had stayed with me. I will rereading it soon. Am half way through The Goldfinch right now. Good video, subscribed!

Watching Donna Tartt’s inteview videos (which are not many) is a great experience! She dressed exactly like her characters, her Southern accent is almost British like Francis, and the most important is.. she’s a real intellectual person! I love her as an author and as a person!! Waiting 10 years for 1 book is really worth it! Plus, she’s a cool old lady! She’s not married and lives reclusively with her dog in a Victorian house. How amazing it is!!

Do the interviewers irritate you? I’ve watched 2 with her and I feel the interviewers talk over her or cut her off mid-thought. It very much aggravates me for her. Like bros, let her speak and finish her thoughts, damn!
Who doesn’t love this book. Who COULDN’T love it. The way she builds mystery around the characters, to then deconstruct this enigma brutally in the most EXQUISIT way - it’s fantastic.
I got this from my best book-friend when I was 16, exactly half my life ago and my fascination with it is unwavering and the translation is superb. To this day, I honestly prefer the German version.
I loved this book. I was a bit disappointed the professor was more on the sidelines, which I'm sure is by design; his influence is creepier that way, I guess. Yes, these kids were SO self absorbed and I didn't feel sorry for any of them. Even so, loved the book.

The Secret History is one of my favorites! I've read it a few times. I get the criticism too, but I still love it. I know Donna Tartt bought the rights back, but I'd love to see a film adaptation. Her writing and insights are brilliant. Excellent review!

this video is excellent!! i can’t stop thinking about this book since i read it and you refreshed my memory about so many things i didn’t notice the first time, i feel like the more you reread certain dialogues or chapters the more you understand them, especially when it comes to julian, everything is so indirect you have to read between the lines in his conversations with the groups and in private with henry. i love donna tartt, she’s incredible
Lol as a European Art History student I felt right at home with the conversations they had and didn’t even think they were particularly pretentious
The secret history is enjoyable when you accept that there are hardly any redeemable characters

Interesting. Wouldn’t you say that the concept we have of a virtuous person is a construct, an idea that perpetuates all of human history, behaviour and interaction and that in reality we’re all more ambivalent in our actions and in what we say? I love a well-written book that explores this.
Loving the passion and eloquence Mique. And you sum it up nicely; On the Nature of Daylight captures the tone and tragedy of the book nicely. Indeed, when I read the epilogue I put on a list of sad classical (I'm dramatic like that) and that song came up. So when I was DJing for my friend as he finished the book you best believe I put On the Nature of Daylight too! Appreciate the review.

I just finished it and I cried in a way I've never cried about a book. I rly loved Richard and Henry but they were such bad people. I feel like Bunny was the only one who was human and even tho he had flaws they were a lot more innocent than the others' flaws. I mean, fantasizing about SAing someone, twin incest, wtf? The ending was rly unsatisfying for me idk.

Late to the party but this was a great analysis 👌 I watched yours before of Bunny and Ian Reids book and loved them . I am still wrapping my head around how to feel about this book because of problematic things that the characters do and say. I can see tarts' purpose don't get me wrong. Although what characters say are not necessarily reflections of the authors belief system, i do somewhat wish that Donna tart instilled just a tad of her two cents into the story to help the reader understand the consequences that people of extreme privilege cause in society, or at least had written an authors note at the end of the book
.Although some of us might find it obvious, I have spoken to some who have a privileged upbringing on their thoughts about the book and they do not seem to grasp the underlying issues behind how these characters think and feel, and how lacking diversity is in the whole story until they're described as criminals such as the "Arabs" but are never even directly present in the book . I know that the author may not have intended this consequence, but I do think that some readers are sadly more likely to lack full, total acknowledgement of all of these underlying issues and how it applies to them in real society

I hated this book when reading it. I don’t like Dickens because he just babbles on day and night. And I felt this way reading this book. When finished I was like, omg this was soooo long! Im not reading anything else by this author. The story was good but she needs an editor!!!

And everyone talks about how horrible the characters are for killing bunny and rahrah. I guess im morally corrupt too bc I feel he deserved to die and that Idve done the same thing, too. He blackmails his friends. He’s a mooch and a homophobic homosexual! Im pretty sure were I to know my bestie had already killed someone the last thing I’d do is be antagonistic 🤷🏻♀️ but that’s just me.

i found it too long, too few twists for me. i get the obsession, but i prefer more depth of character & plotlines. i so wanted to wax lyrical & sing it praises, but only for younger people who dont study philosophy or classics already. Tartt is talented as a writer, definitely.
You need to slow down a bit. The culture of AG was aware of human dignity. Another matter is whether you are too much anachronistic, and perceive dignity off some recent connotations . To really grasp what's what is to minimally understand the ancients. But it takes forever.. but you need to say something :)
