@SPKdesign1 Most likely as Kate's early records were only available on import in the states. Pats label buried the track on Side 2 so 🤷 they realized it was not a potential hit for her. I had the original Kate 7" but had sold the album.

No, you can still like it in grades. Furthermore, this is a comparison. I love both versions, but Kates is more in the vain of the song to me. I heard the Pat version first. Pat B is so powerful and meaty, it might not fit the song
I think I may have to read the book Wuthering Heights, because I think Kate captured Cathy, the youthful, lost, ghost pleading for her soul to be revealed to Heathcliff? I may be off, but the music video shows much much more than the voice. Case in point, the first time I heard KBs version, I thought it shrill. After seeing the video, I see a youthful woman taken way before her time, and trying desperately to communicate with her lover. That’s what I felt anyway, and may be off base here. Again, I haven’t read the book yet. Now Pat Benatar’s version - this is just beautiful music to my ears, and I could hear Pat singing any time of day and know she will never disappoint. I understand KBs version is wonderful, but Pat’s seems to capture her love of the song in her vocals.Tears come to my eyes when Pat sings this song if I’m in a particularly reflective mood. Pat Benatar was the first exposure I had to this song and I do like her version, but having said that, Kate Bush has the definitive version. I feel the emotion in Kate's version.
I had completely forgotten that this cover existed. The band behind Pat is the reason. Kate's vocal and the great instrumentation behind her, as you said, makes Kate's the pick.
Bush sounds like the shrill cackling witch in every kids movie with a witch ever, i wouldnt give it a second listen but Pat i listen over and over i wish there was an hour loop of it
First I heard was Pat's version and fell in love with the song. Only recently heard Kate's original version...ouch. Scary, high, and well, odd. ( and oh so no on the dance ) Sorry y'all...Kate wrote a beautiful song, but lower that pitch to human tones and a fuller base to the vocals like Pat did. Just my musician's opinion. I can, after 5 or 6 times listening to Kate's, trying to appreciate it, not cringe my ears. I'll keep trying from time to time, but Pat will always be my favorite.
i heard this song for the first time when Pat Benatar sang it .. i was in high school when Pat Benatar became popular & tbh i Love Pat's rendition of this song better , it's just more soulful ... i had not ever even heard of Kate Bush until today ...
Yay , Great to hear these songs back to back .The Album " The Kick Inside " was released in 1978 , Wuthering Heights was released the same year , saw Kate preform the song live on Top of The Pops . Had to have the Album , been a Kate Bush fan ever since , Kate did write a lot of stuff as a young teenager , her brother knows David Gilmour , and was impressed with her song writing talent , The rest is History ! Oh , I prefer the original , You have to be some body even more "Other World " to out cover "Wuthering Heights " Cheers for the reaction .
*"You have to be some body even more "Other World " to out cover "Wuthering Heights "* - Very well said, Graham! 😀👍 I still remember hearing Kate for the first time, in '78: I was only 8, and my then 22-year-old Brother had bought 'The Kick Inside' and played it to the rest of the family - and her voice sounded sooo unusual to me! 😊 Easily in my Top 5 of singers! 😀👍
I appreciate your honesty regarding Kate's vocals, in particular her higher registry not being your cup of tea. I however, find THE KICK INSIDE, to be one of the best debut albums I've had the honor to discover in my 65 years. Might be my age at the time but this woman's work spoke to me back then. And actually it still does. ✌
Thank you for this comparison, I would always go for Kate, since as soon as I saw the White Dress version of the music video, I was hooked. I feel that Kate's vocal rises above the music more and in addition to Kate's amazing "one take" vocal performance, also have to consider the usual song structure, key changes and timing changes it's so different to anything that came before it. I feel that the Pat Benatar version plays it safe. The harpsichord sounding instrument is actually a Celeste (also known as a bell-piano). I do have another suggestion involving a song by Kate and that would be "This Woman's Work" compared to Maxwell's cover version. Oops just to add "The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever" typically tends to held at or around Kate's birthday (July the 30th), so events are planned for this coming weekend.
@@hanierfamily So you did compare it will Maxwell's cover? Oh ok., if so I have another comparison suggestion... "Running Up That Hill" Kate Bush vs Meg Myers vs Placebo
I still do not know why my sister and I decided not to go to the Countdown studios when Kate Bush and Leif Garrett were guest hosts on the show. We loved her and her debut ''The Kick Inside''. ''Wuthering Heights'' was a # 1 hit single in Australia, and we had her posters on our walls. But for some reason, perhaps due to Saturday morning VFL Girls practice, we decided not to go to the studio and see her host Countdown. We figured that we'll catch her next time she comes to the country. She's new and young.. Why wouldn't she come back? 🥺 I love Kate's ''Wuthering Heights''. I never cared for Pat's...
Hi ,how are you keeping ? Yes good point about her not coming over to Aus again , I never got a chance to see her live , apparantly she did not like touring . Her gigs were very Theatrical as you know .which was a shame for her followers ,that she kind of did not like the attention . Yes I read the book as teenager , understood the song a lot better ,very dark and vengeful , point of interest , the Branwell family lived in a lovely cottage in Chapel street Penzance , that family are to do with the Bronte family cant remember what it is ,dahh , Any way have a spliffic week Live it Up , cheers Graham
@@ghichens3418 Hi Graham, I also read ''Wuthering Heights''. I was 13 and my older sister, Hayley (aka I Was A Countdown Kid), passed it down to me. I read twice because I was intrigued by the story. I believe her roadie or somebody working on her tour died while they were on the road. The death traumatized her, and she never did a live show again (except for a few years back). I bought everything she did up until The Red Shoes. I'll be damned.. I haven't bought any new Kate Bush in thirty years! 🙁 I loved The Sensual World album upon release. It was a really good record to chill out to after a heavy night clubbing (which I did a lot back in the late 80's/early 90's). Cheers, Gillian

I do like history ! yep a geek at heart I dont think we will ever have the creativety of music that we had from our teens up to about mid 90s ! thanks for getting back , have a great week , will get back on that trivia on Branwells ! cheers ! Kate every time! But if you find the vocals to be a bit shrill Cynthia, then you need to listen to the 1986 version which is on the album 'The Whole Story' (and the B side to Experiment IV) Kate re-recorded the vocals for a "more mature sound" and there is some great guitar work too, give it a listen when you get time I'm sure you'll like it.
Yes, that 'New Vocal' version from '86 is great, too! Also because of the much improved drum sound. But there's something about the '78 original version that just can't be beaten, in my opinion. And 'Experiment IV' isn't shabby either! Especially together with the video clip that has Hugh Laurie and Dawn French in it 😊
I never heard of Kate, or her version of the song. I had Pat's album. She's the best. Kate sounded like a parody of Minnie Mouse. Sorry. Just being honest.
As much as I love Pat Benetar, I really love Kate Bush, Kate wins. The guitar is Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd Pat Benetar states that her fans would lynch her if she didn't sing this song live. Very much the same with Whitesnake, Ain't no love in the heart of the city. That's a great comparison, Graham. 😊
@@colrhodes377 Gilmour did play with her at some point. It's possible there is a live version oot there wi Gilmour on it. I would need to go hunting to find oot but not right noo.
Thanks for a really enjoyable reaction video especially from someone who by their own admission doesn't particularly like Kate's younger voice (deliberately made even higher by impersonating a ghost in the song). And for me there really is no comparison between these two versions... Kate's version wins hands down every day. While I like and respect Pat Benatar a lot anyone trying to cover a song like "Wuthering Heights" has real issue to contend with - because while the song is utterly utterly beautiful, its essential oddness can't be denied. It is 'odd' and sits in its own place in music and so try to cover it successful and still make it your own you really have to change some of the things that while 'odd. made it the song that it is. And for me, in Pat's case all of the changes she made to it were all changes that were just not on a part with the original and so the cumulative effect of those changes just gradually leaves a little bit farther and farther behind the original version. I love Kate's younger voice and stand with John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) who called it 'beauty beyond compare' but I do get it that she isn't for everyone. For me a far better comparison would be between Kate's original version and her own later version from her 1986 compilation album "The Whole Story" where she sings in a lower deeper voice. Comparing the younger Kate to the older Kate, that would be a really good "who did it better" reaction video.
@@hanierfamily Ha, if only older Kate and younger Kate could fight each other... younger Kate would win even though it was once reported that the older Kate kicked a paparazzo right up the jacksy ... meaner in the clinches I reckon. Her two versions sound more different than I would have thought even though it is called only a 'new vocal' (the vocal being a little bit lower and Kate interweaving more vocals into the outro). For me personally the original wins out, but even I have to admit that for about the last minute to 90 seconds the latter version probably edges it and it probably does showcase that gorgeous Ian Bairnson guitar solo better.
@@hanierfamily - *...because they are both Kate"* - Another great comparison in a similar vein might be 'Into The Lens' by YES vs. 'I Am A Camera' by The Buggles ! It's ultimately the same song but recorded for two different genres, *and* sung by the same guy! 😀 By the way, Kate plays the piano herself on 'Wuthering Heights' 😊
@mightyboy1111 I've just thought of a great song for reaction to, and I'm willing to bet that nobody else has done it. Coast to coast, Do the hucklebuck
Pat Benatar sang the song and it shows she is in pain while Kate bush sing it like she's happy I prefer the Pat Benatar as she has the better voice. No way Kate did it better.
She's the opposite of happy. She's a ghost wanting to drag her former lover into the underworld to join her her. Then she thinks she'll be happy (but she won't, because she killed herself because she was unhappy). Hence the tragedy.
I now know of three studio recordings of this 78 Kate Bush original song. First is the Kate Bush version from her debut album, second is her own re-recorded vocal from her compilation album from 1986, The Whole Story. Then there is this great cover by Pat Benatar. First place goes to the 1986 Kate version, she herself said that on the original she was just a bit too young and she still had some things to learn about putting the right emotion into it. That 86 version is perfect. Second is the 1978 original. Okay, she was still a 18-19 year old girl. But she invented it, it's the original forever. It was groundbreaking when it was released. Plus, even so young, she totally owned the song and the story feels a lot more real. Third is Pat Benatar. She definitely can sing. But when the full band sets in, she drops to a lower key. I understand that she wants to sing it in the key that suits her best. I am pretty sure they tried the original key first but discovering it was not her key. But a lot of the atmosphere gets lost, both by the key and the way the band performs it. The band and Pat are absolutely great but this is a cover. And I presume that the band needed to express themselves in their own way. It sounds generic and there are lots of singers that can match Pats version.
Kate's voice is shrill because she is singing from the perspective of a ghost. Pat Benatar even said that she was disappointed with how her version turned out, the record company pushed them to finish it fast, they wanted to do something really special with it.
I first head KB's version around the time that Runnin' came out. I hated it. But I was also a teenaged boy into to Rush, Iron Maiden, some REO, etc. And I did like Pat Benatar but only enough to buy the occasional single. No albums. So, I never knew... In my 40s, I revisited WH and slowly came to like it. About 3 months ago I was perusing PB's discography and thought, "WTH?! She covered what now?" All that to say, that these days I like (don't love) each version but prefer Pat's take mainly because of the more straight-ahead backing instrumentals.
Have you guys read the Emily Brontë novel? Hayley handed it down to me when I was about 13, and I read the book twice. It helped that I was familiar with the Kate Bush song, but I really fell in love with that novel at that age. My daughter has also read it.
It’s very much linked to The Pennines in W Yorkshire and I don’t think anyone can do it justice without a background of the writer and context. She wrote the song about the story. It’s an homage so to speak. There’s not much in the way of American power ballad guitar up in W Yorkshire I can tell you that. Whippets Cricket Warm bitter Sheep on the moors And a lot of rain in winter And straight speaking Folk
Chalk and cheese. I understand KB actually got into the whole Bronte sisters history and the book has to be studied for the song to work. Which is what she did. Because the song is so unique and attached to the narrative of the book it’s nigh on impossible for another person to attempt it.
Not even close to Pat. Pat is an opera singer in one of the greatest. If not, the best female rock ‘n’ roll singers of all time. Why in the world would you even compare?
The Pat Benatar version is more aligned with the book, which is dark. From a technical standpoint, Benatar's version is more difficult, showing her vocal range.
@@jimmycranier3668 I love the fact that Kate wrote this song, but come on guys….. she was 19….. first song she ever recorded. Kate is a master at songs, but Pat Benatar nailed this song, hands down!!!

Oh yes... Emily Brontë's 1847 Wuthering Heights. There've been numerous film adaptations over the years. My favorites are the most recent film in 2022 starring Jet Jandreau and Bryan Ferriter, which is pretty faithful at telling the entire story. Followed by the 1992 film with Juliet Binoche and Ralph Fiennes, it too brings the entire novel to life. Then the 1970 film with Anna Calder-Marshall and Timothy Dalton, wherein the connection between the characters feels genuine, and the 1939 film starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier, a bit over dramatic for today perhaps, but I like Olivier's old school hardline portrayal of Heathcliff. Then there is the 2008 Mini Series, while not truly faithful to the book, it is one of Tom Hardy's best roles playing as Heathcliff. As for Kate Bush's original version of Wuthering Heights, while I love her song Running Up That Hill, admittedly, and with all due respect to Kate as an artist, sadly, I've never been a fan of her original. Not because of the song, on the contrary, it is simply that I do not prefer Kate's high-pitched version. So naturally, being a huge fan of Pat Benatar, when she came along and made her cover version of Kate's song, well... that's when I was finally able to fall in love with it. I know, how biased of me. Cheers!
You should compare The Police Don't Stand So Close To Me (1980) with Don't Stand So Close To Me '86 (1986) You would be amazed at the difference in a 6 year period. Also Every Breath You Take (1983) and Every Bomb You Make (1984) ua-cam.com/video/YdTLkAE6s2E/v-deo.htmlsi=oi59rYvjYz0Ff0KK
I can't fault Pat Benatar vocally, and I thought the verses were quite good, but when the chorus kicked in it all fell apart for me. Rhythmically her version just felt so static and lifeless. She didn't make a great song into a bad one, just less satisfactory.
First time ever hearing a cover of any KB song, let alone this one,or Pat Benatar. It's no contest. 100% Kate, the other version is very slow and ponderous, and not even original enough to make a difference.
My apologies for being negative, but to me, that cover version has always been the worst thing Pat has ever done. And I do actually like her music a lot otherwise! Her remake of 'Shadows Of The Night' was much better than Helen Schneider's original, though. There are certain songs that just shouldn't be touched!

Maybe I'm all alone but my view is that Pat's version is dreadful. Kate's version is iconic, & very gothic sounding whereas Pat's version is just , well, bland. To have Pat's full band trying to rock it out ruined the mystical ambiance of the lyrics. Awful version.
This isn't her first single in UK, but "December will be magic again". Hers is a catchy music, and her voice can't always be said to be good. And her dancing with singing is not her own invention, her predecessor is Carol Laure of Canadian French singer and actress. This version is totally different from the official version, ahh. Yeah. Somehow to me, American Pat and her Italian American partner NG, fail to capture the mood and spirit of an 1847 classic of English literature like Kate does. They turned it into some generic '80s power ballad.

I had completely forgotten that this cover existed. The band behind Pat is the reason. Kate's vocal and the great instrumentation behind her, as you said, makes Kate's the pick.
Bush sounds like the shrill cackling witch in every kids movie with a witch ever, i wouldnt give it a second listen but Pat i listen over and over i wish there was an hour loop of it
She's playing a demented ghost ...

No Pat killed it. Kate’s voice on this just didn’t hit it for me.
Kates version would have fit in the Munchkin Land scenes in the Wizard of Oz.Pat all the way
i heard this song for the first time when Pat Benatar sang it .. i was in high school when Pat Benatar became popular & tbh i Love Pat's rendition of this song better , it's just more soulful ... i had not ever even heard of Kate Bush until today ...
We've done a number of Kate Bush songs, if you'd like to get a taste of her work. It's quite good.
Yay , Great to hear these songs back to back .The Album " The Kick Inside " was released in 1978 , Wuthering Heights was released the same year , saw Kate preform the song live on Top of The Pops . Had to have the Album , been a Kate Bush fan ever since ,
Kate did write a lot of stuff as a young teenager , her brother knows David Gilmour , and was impressed with her song writing talent ,
The rest is History ! Oh , I prefer the original , You have to be some body even more "Other World " to out cover "Wuthering Heights "
Cheers for the reaction .
@@mightyV444 Yep , Has to be in my top 5 as well , Cheers Squire .
We reviewed 'The Kick Inside' on our Patreon channel. It was great.

I love Kate's ''Wuthering Heights''.
@@ghichens3418 Hi Graham,
I also read ''Wuthering Heights''.
Especially together with the video clip that has Hugh Laurie and Dawn French in it 😊
...it’s almost like Kate heard Benatar’s cover and said “Oh yeah? Hold my beer...”
I never heard of Kate, or her version of the song. I had Pat's album. She's the best. Kate sounded like a parody of Minnie Mouse. Sorry. Just being honest.
Simply put...Kate is a genius. In the realms of Bowie. ✌
Pat ‘s was supposed to be more rock focused I presume so it was less whimsical and stronger. I like them both for what each brings to the great song.
I like Kate, but prefer Pat's version. Hayley Westenra does a good job covering this song.
As much as I love Pat Benetar, I really love Kate Bush, Kate wins. The guitar is Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd
Pat Benetar states that her fans would lynch her if she didn't sing this song live. Very much the same with Whitesnake, Ain't no love in the heart of the city.
That's a great comparison, Graham. 😊
Thanks Col ,did bring a smile to a pissy wet Wednesday morning !
The guitar solo was played by Ian Bairnson.

@@colrhodes377 Gilmour did play with her at some point. It's possible there is a live version oot there wi Gilmour on it.

Benetar’s version is so much better in my opinion. Her voice is so rich and sultry. Not screechy like Kate’s.
However, there could be no winner because they are both Kate.

Kate Bush.
Owned both versions since the albums were released. PB’s version is just too ponderous an arrangement, otherwise I agree with your analysis.
There is no comparison. Kate Bshu's voice and acting continues to be better
Pat Benatar is a great singer, but Kate Bush is in a different place altogether , the way she sings is almost unworldly ,
She's performing as a ghost.
Kate Bush sings like nails on a chalkboard with her version!
Vocally, you can't really fault Pat. However, her version lacks subtly to a degree. That said, I still admire and appreciate Ms. Benatar! ✌
Fabulous song...timeless..kate bush sings with more expression imo, and unlike pat's version she proves its more than just a song....
f off. Benatar rules. Kate rules too. This is always a great debate.
She covered what now?"
All that to say, that these days I like (don't love) each version but prefer Pat's take mainly because of the more straight-ahead backing instrumentals.
Here is some another idea, Kate Bush vs Within Temptation - Running Up That Hill
That wasn't a harpsichord. It was producer Andrew Powell on a similar instrument called a "celeste".
Pat Benatar all day I’m so glad I have to never listen to Kate Bush ever again
Have you guys read the Emily Brontë novel? Hayley handed it down to me when I was about 13, and I read the book twice. It helped that I was familiar with the Kate Bush song, but I really fell in love with that novel at that age. My daughter has also read it.
Kate Bush and Emily Bronte were both born on July 30th
@@kevin-f6e2u Wow.... Wow .. Unbelievable. 😄
Sorry... Couldn't help myself.
I (Chris) always thought it was a bit grimy. I'm not a fan of the antihero. I found it hard to relate to the main characters.
It’s very much linked to The Pennines in W Yorkshire and I don’t think anyone can do it justice without a background of the writer and context. She wrote the song about the story. It’s an homage so to speak. There’s not much in the way of American power ballad guitar up in W Yorkshire I can tell you that.
Whippets
Cricket
Warm bitter
Sheep on the moors
And a lot of rain in winter
And straight speaking Folk
Chalk and cheese.
I understand KB actually got into the whole Bronte sisters history and the book has to be studied for the song to work.
Which is what she did.
Because the song is so unique and attached to the narrative of the book it’s nigh on impossible for another person to attempt it.
Not even close to Pat. Pat is an opera singer in one of the greatest. If not, the best female rock ‘n’ roll singers of all time. Why in the world would you even compare?
The next comparison I'd love to see is creedence Clearwater revival doing bad Moon rising and then a version by The Reels
The Pat Benatar version is more aligned with the book, which is dark. From a technical standpoint, Benatar's version is more difficult, showing her vocal range.
It's a fun rock'n'roll song.
She wants to dance.
Kate wants to rip your chest open and steal your soul.

Kate's song is about a spook 😮 so her singing is very ethereal
Cheers!

Yeah. Somehow to me, American Pat and her Italian American partner NG, fail to capture the mood and spirit of an 1847 classic of English literature like Kate does. They turned it into some generic '80s power ballad.
