Rare Lightning: Giant Red Sprites and ELVES
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2014
- A Collection of TLE's in Hawaiian Skies from the night of Sept. 29th 2014.
===================================================
The atmosphere around Oahu, the night of Sept. 29th 2014, became highly energized with intense electrical energy. The massive discharge of this energy initiated a spectacular display of transient luminous events known as Sprites. Sprites, lightning associated phenomena, are especially rare in the skies around Hawaii as atmospheric conditions are rarely favorable for electrical storms, especially those with the energy necessary for producing highly energetic events like Sprites, Blue Jets, Giant Jets, Elves and Halo's (Transient Luminous Events).
This footage, recorded with image intensified night vision systems, represents two hours of observing and recording. Due to the massive scale of the weather system and the recording systems rather limited field of view (40 Degree FOV), only a fraction of TLE's from that time period were captured.
Half of the raw footage has been converted from the image intensifiers native greenish/yellow (P43 Phosphor) output color to BW. The other half was recorded in BW via the cameras WB settings.

===================================================
Image Intensified Systems (night vision cameras) are ideal for real time imaging of TLE's (Sprites etc...), as these events are quite faint to the naked eye, nearly invisible with very short duration. The emission spectra for Red Sprites closely matching the peak spectral response of most night vision image intensifiers make them an ideal technology to image TLE's with.
Components/equipment used to capture the Sprites in this video are as follows:
1- ITT F6010 Image Intensified System; ITT F6010 Pocketscope, ITT 1x Relay Lens P/NO: PP-46-1020, Panasonic Lumix GF1 Micro 4/3's Camera.
2 - Night Vision Depot Micro Night Vision Monocular System; NVD Micro Monocular, Camera Adapter Assembly/Ring P/NO: ITTA-274049-1, Panasonic Lumix GF1 Micro 4/3's Camera

The one at 1:06 is incredible - From other videos I've seen, it's quite rare to see them movement or them forming and disappearing. Absolutely wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
Happy to and appreciate your appreciation of these captures 🖖🏻.
Elves are difficult to get on camera. They appear faster than not only sprites, but faster than you can blink, no joke
And a camera refresh rate is much much slower than your eyes
I know
i looked up videos of elves and this is the only real one that i could find. This may be the only documented case, not entirely sure though.
1:06 best Sprites he filmed. elves you would need an incredibly high fps recording to truly be observed.
ELVES are difficult to capture without an extremely high FPS camera because they typically last for only about one millisecond.
That shot at 1:06 though is fucking class.
I think i saw an elve today, i had looked into sprites and elves before, and during a storm today i was at my window looking at lightining and i think i saw an elve, although it was really fast and a bit obstructed by some clouds it was still amazing.
Thanks for this video. This is so freaking interesting
Quite a remarkable phenomenon! Great captures!
Dang, elves are huuuge
I'm convinced all that sprites are, are the lightening's farts
WOAH DAMN, these are some of the sickest captures of sprites i've ever seen
Elves are very large and very fast
0:23 look at the tallest cloud you will see a ball of lightning form and then go into the cloud then the other tall cloud beside it has a jet.
Thats called a pixie
Seems to be a meteor, if I'm looking at the same event.
@@cnoct meteor or a pixie
@@abel3557 Looks like a meteor to me.
@@cnoct That's an unusual meteor then
Really well done video, but if i may ask (if you are knowledged on such subjects), why is footage of ELVE's way rarer than sprites or jets, despite ELVE's being considered the most common type of electrical discharge (well, at least thats what multiple sources ive read have said)? I doubt its "hard to see" because from what i remember ELVE's are absolutely gigantic and are bright enough that its hard to miss.
IDK who's considering ELVES to be the most common type of TLE, who and what are the sources for such 🖖🏻?
@@cnoct unfortunately even after scouring almost everything about these weird phenomena i could not find the article i was looking for. I DO remember, however, that it was a scholarly article and that it was quite, quite old. My best guess is that the article may have mixed up ELVE's with sprite haloes, or that its just flat out wrong or severely outdated. Until i find it again, this is my best answer. Cheers
Great footage, I must try to film my next storm.
Ilove it thanks so much
the sprite with a halo looks like a jellyfish
They do tend to look like things with tentacles. Might look like a jellyfish but is not a jellyfish sprite, the event duration is too long and shape is not that of a jellyfish sprite. The halo is likely not a sprite halo as labeled, more likely off-axis glare from an out of frame sprite🖖.
Amazing stuff ! This is visible with the naked eye right ?
Yes just dim and of short duration.
Awesome video :)
Thank you 🖖🏻

@@cnoct Thank you heaps... really appreciated ... OUTSTANDING Video
you are very lucky
How rare are these? If I point my nightvision setup and hit record on any far away thunderstorm is my chance of getting them good?
Dominick Zaucha TLE's occur quite frequently. They do tend to be associated with rather intense thunderstorms, the type that often occur during transitional periods such as spring and fall. Distance from thunderstorms increases your chances of capturing or witnessing these events. Ideally the storm should be at least 40 to 60 miles away with a clear line of sight to the up reaches of the system.

I realize I'm replying to this three years later but.... thanks for posting. I'm thinking about a project using a fixed wing drone to capture video of sprites using a RunCam Night Eagle 2 starlight camera. Just doing my research now on how plausible this would be. It's good to hear that they occur quite frequently, although the area I live in doesn't often get supercell thunderstorms. Just to allay any fears we're thinking about doing this in a rural area away from airports and we would only need to get on top of the haze layer which would be thousands of feet below the altitude any airliners are at.
@@smoothvirus you would need to file a NOTAM for any drone flight above 400ft AGL and it would be a good idea to contact your nearest FSDO and ask if there are any other particular actions you would need to take to ensure safety from manned aircraft.
Yup, I know, I'm considering asking folks I know at FAA about getting a waiver for high altitude work. For the time being as long as I can get above the tree line I should have decent visibility.
Carpe Nocturnum I know I'm late to the party here but I just wanted to thank you for the invaluable links.
