Hi Ash. Thanks for the video. I in no way expected my own video when sending all these clips in but it is nice for people to see me driving in a more respectful manner rather than driving like an idiot 🤣. I can honestly vouch that driving in this way is far more relaxing than driving in my original way. I really appreciate all the videos you post and I'm sure everyone else on this channel does to as it helps so many. Thanks again for making my day brighter and I'm rebuilding my collection of clips to send over to you already :)

great job you have done. my dad was an advanced driving instructor a long time ago and although he passed away in 2016, a lot of tips and words of wisdom have stuck with me. one of them was "a driving licence is a licence to learn". doesnt matter how many years of driving you got, there is still more to learn about driving and you have proven that in the changes you have made to your driving style.

    Well done to Will,
in the 1980’s I was a horrendous driver, too fast, hot headed and aggressive, impatient, accelerate fast on the throttle then heavy on the brake, tailgate when being held up, and generally selfish.
In the 1990’s I calmed down a bit,
in the 2000s I started to appreciate what good driving actually is and started to develop conscious awareness of my own standards.
In the 2010s I actively sort out self education on what good driving actually is and have been trying my best at it ever since to steadily improve.

A lot of good driving habits is born of empathy and understanding for the other people on the road. A lot of bad driving is from a self obsessed mind set seeing everyone else as obstacles that are in your way. When you travel you are sharing the road with others and working together is the best thing for all,
it’s a partnership that allow you to both get what you need.

My judgement around large vehicles tends to be generally good and I harbour a mindset of ‘I need to give this vehicle time and space. I shall help them where I can’

One thing i've learned is never expect a thanks when helping someone on the road, sometimes people are grateful but are trying to concentrate on driving. When you get a thanks it is nice but i think you making it a non-situation is thanks enough. Otherwise you can end up triggering yourself.

    • @dbracer
      @dbracer 9 місяців тому

@@rufusgreenleaf2466 As with life in general, if you only do nice things for the nice reactions you get, you're doing it wrong. You shouldn't go out seeking praise, but when you receive praise, it's a good thing. If you think about it that way, then you shouldn't get angry if people don't acknowledge your "good deed".
I think it's different if someone doesn't thank you for holding a door open though - that's customary!

4:30. It's not the worst, Ashley. I remember seeing a learner at traffic lights select reverse!
Credit to Will, though unlike the following driver in the incident I witnessed, Will had left enough room for such a mishap to be corrected and a collision averted.
But I am also going to give you an example that you will not expect.
Near me there is a twitten (alley to you not from Sussex) which is one person wide.
People normally squeeze past one another. Yesterday I arrived to find a lady walking towards me on crutches.
The driving mindset said "wait for her to get through".

And I know that's not why you should do it but I feel like it's good practice if someone thanks you for helping out it reinforces the good behavior. I always try to wave or flash my hazards as a thanks.
As a farmer when I'm in the road and I make the effort to pull in to let cars past it's very disheartening when the cars zoom past as if they are the only ones entitled to be on the road. In my own experience, the more you try to help out, the less inclined to irritation I'll be. I always considered myself a good driver (does anyone think they're a bad driver?), I had a lot of extra training ~20+ years ago that gave me awareness, skills and abilities way above the standard driving test, but doing a lot of 'normal' driving over the years has perished some of those skills, and watching your videos has helped me realise where a few improvements could be made, so I'm definitely one that your videos have changed a little bit 👍
Will's driving transformation is incredible, from actively causing problems or making them worse to try and point out failings in other drivers, he seems to now accept that other drivers will make mistakes and is actively predicting them to make them less of an event, not more, his driving now looks like an A+ example. Imagine a world where everyone drove like the old Will, now compare that to everyone driving like the new Will 😊 good man 👍

My wife has noticed that I'm a better driver thanks to this channel. Recognising your own bad habits while watching the many terrible examples on UA-cam is a real eye opener.
I wonder if a mandatory driving awareness course is the answer. The driving standards in London are pretty shocking, many drivers just don't seem to care. Maybe once every 5 years you have to attend a one day course, a reset for bad driving habits. Like a speed awareness course of sorts.
Or maybe some time after you pass your test you attend a "check up course" to curb any bad habits or lack of knowledge.
Personally I think driving skill and awareness should be taught at school so when you start learning to drive you have an understanding of your vehicle, what it's capable of and an understanding of the rules of the road.

Big common factor here is that good driving makes allowances for other people’s mistakes. If you assume the worst then you should be able to re act to it when it does happen. I’ve got to admit that junction at 8:00 might well have caught me out if I didn’t know it, I’d say poor road design but it looks more like trying to shoehorn roads into places they don’t really fit.

04:07 Look how far back the queue is on Gilgal in Stourport when everyone on the one-way system knows that they only practically have one lane option if they want to leave down the Worcester road.

Ashley I've probably said this a few times now! I now drive with total regard for other drivers always looking for danger or to help things move and this is basically down to you! Thank you a thousand times for making me a better driver. 😊

Always interesting to see roads I know really well. That roundabout by the Rose Theatre is such a flashpoint, cars turning right as Will did in the original video often put all four wheels to the right of the paint, it makes things interesting sometimes

The clip at 2:38 shows the value of looking to the left of cars that are going around a parked car - it is something I've often found useful myself as it can give a surprisingly good view far enough up the road to help you decide whether or not to follow

Will is an absolute legend and a great example of how we can change our driving for the better. I would like to think I have taken a lot from your videos and now attempt to read the situation ahead better and just be more patient with other road users. Although I live in a different country with different road rules, one thing I take away is the positive attitude to driving and I am thankful to you for posting these videos.

    Bravo Will! Awesome job! 👏
I'm better than i was. Ash's videos have made me more aware of the dangers of the road, but also as a cyclist to see things from the drivers perspective of what they can or can't see. I think my hazard and risk assessment has improved and i make more scenarios a non event.
I still need to work on reducing the amount of hand gestures, arm waving and head shaking though, with the occasional expletive.
My frustration limit has increased, but there is a limit and i do get a bit hard headed after the 50th close pass (exaggerating a bit here 😉 but after a while you get to the end of your rope and get stroppy).
There are always things i can do better and understand that we all make mistakes and not everything someone does on 2 or 4+ wheels is deliberate or malicious.
    Share the road.
    Safety over speed.
Lost time is better than lost life, so don't lose patience.

Fabulous to see how Will has taken good advice to heart and improved so brilliantly! I too feel that I take so much from the channel and all of Ashley's tips, examples and advice. Still we can all make mistakes. It's others that see the mistakes coming and adjusting their driving to make it all a non event. Thank you Ashley and well done Will!

While my driving is in no way perfect, I definitely feel like I've become a better driver by watching this channel. Seeing scenarios from a different perspective helps understand why you should drive in a certain way in certain situations and things to be aware of. Perhaps the biggest thing that's helped me is giving myself enough time that I don't feel like I'm in a rush.

As a (now retired) truck driver, I cannot tell you how good it makes you feel when someone anticipates the problems of a large vehicle well ahead and gives you room. It didn't happen very often, and when it did I thought 'Another truck driver and / or advanced driver'. Great that your videos spread the message wider, Ash - thank you.

Now retired train driver, but I’ll do the same for my fellow bus drivers and obviously artic/ 8 wheelers. I’ve driven a 45 seater coach that was my home for a few years so have a little experience of big stuff. I’d say awareness/ tolerance from other drivers has diminished in my time driving.

Excellent to see and share it far and wide. In the UK we have 2 organisations that are equally passionate about good driving and provides great way to improve; RoSPA and IAM RoadSmart. I heartily recommend either; there is no disadvantage to improving your driving skills and both modest cost (a lot less than excess fee payable after a minor prang). The younger we get some advanced driving tuition the more years you benefit from it!

Hi Ashley, I've been watching your videos for a while now. This one in particular is very inspirational.
I'm a former driving instructor, I wouldn't pretend to be driving to that standard for quite a few years.
I've been impatient and intolerant with some of my driving.
I'd act completely the opposite way in real life.
This vid is a great reminder of how to treat other people.
My driving has improved since watching.
I don't agree with some of your views but on the whole I'm there.
Interesting now driving an automatic I've realised I've been approaching junctions too fast, it's easy to get dragged along. Keep up the good work.

That's great to see, the only way you can improve is by recognising your faults and taking steps to rectify them. For me, it was that my driving was very reactive, looking but not seeing. Signing up with institute of advanced motorist has helped a lot, but you never stop learning.

I recognised the roads that Will was driving on, as I sat and passed my ADI Pt 2 test at the local test centre.
I have also driven the roads on blues and sirens responding to 999 calls.
These roads can be a nightmare to drive on.
