(Sorry, posted before I finished) She was able to shine against Ultron, further cementing that episode duo as my favorite in the series, but that was one awesome moment in what felt like very little standout moments for the character
You're right, I do wish they had figured out a way to make her a bit more of a heavy-hitter sometimes. But I suppose it is somewhat reflective of the comics - and there's something to be said for having a consistent power scale on the team. Just a shame Jan has to be at the bottom.
Yeah, Wasp was one of my favorites but less because of her powers and more for her humanity. She always injected this burst of fun energy into everything which was necessary as, well, they’re comic book superheroes. While I’m sure it’s all harrowing to them, it all still looks fun to us, hence why we enjoy the show. I also appreciate that she was the one who tried to solve things through communication, especially among her fellow Avengers. The powerhouse ones never really did that. Sometimes the best power in a fight is a caring heart.
I always thought Hulk's rampage in Some Assembly Required was because Amora was playing on his paranoia, since he's never known what it means to trust others. He's more defensive than anything when he chooses to talk in that episode, because he's always on guard. And when Amora talks to him as Mind Ghost Bruce, she tells him that his fears are justified -which is the worst thing you can say when someone is paranoid-. The only one he -begrudgingly- trusts on the team so far is Wasp, and him accidentally hurting her is how he breaks from Amora's control in the first place. The other Avengers don't trust him, or even like him, but they do genuinely want to help. The best evidence for this, at this point in the series, is Tony protecting him from a SHIELD attack at the end of Breakout, and the others joining him. Even then, Amora's manipulations took their toll on Hulk, since he echoes what she said to him when he quits at the end of the episode.
It seems you’re doing a whole series of videos on this show, that’s great. I love EMH and I’m glad it’s finally getting some appreciation. If you’re interested, there’s a movement to bring this show back, along with Spectacular Spider-Man and Wolverine & the X-Men, that were all meant to be in the same universe. It’s called #SaveTheYostVerse, and we’re preparing a trending event on October 20th
Spectacular’s not a part of this, FYI. Greg Weisman and Victor Cook had their own ideas for other Marvel heroes. Yost liked to think they were connected, but he didn’t work on Spectacular. He did try to bring Josh Keaton as Spider-Man, but that works as a nod to Spectacular.
@@GamerSlyRatchet1 Do you have any sources for this? No worries if not, but I'd like to make sure any eventual videos I do on this universe are as accurate as possible :)
@@GamerSlyRatchet1 It works as a nod, or as a connection. Truly we don’t know since they never got the chance to do it. But I like to think they are connected.
Im not from US so I had never even seen a 60s comic but its really nice to see people making shows about comic books caring about the source material to adapt it and not dismiss it out of hand cause of the "60s cheese". I also never knew that about the Mandrake. I just tought he was s monke with slight hypnosis powers. Thanks for the knowledge.
Man I would of love to see the World War Hulk be in EMH.Would of been a real cool especially if the hulk kept the Executioners battle Axe and used it as one of his weapons fighting off all the marvel heroes.
Hell no. Hulk has already been disrespectfully portrayed as an egotistical goth eyed shell of a shell of his former self, I don't want ruined anything else about him too. Mind you emh is good but knowing what I know about the hulk the aspect of emh when the hulk is involved it is solid fecal garbage.
Very good point. I have several of the reprints and sometimes they are just goofy. But they can be reworked. I remember reading the Hulk and Boomerang was throwing rings for some reason. But they retooled the character a bit into something better. You cut away the bad part of an apple and use the rest. And then many apples are used to make a pie. And while I generally hate retcons, advancing a character is different. It's like Quentin Beck working for the Tinkerer. It makes sense. Or Beetle becomes Mach 1. I could see that. He's tired of getting his butt kicked. Don't change something just to change it, put some thought into it. EMH did that.
I will always have a soft spot for The Enchantress. Prrrrrrrrrobably because I first saw her as drawn by Rob Liefeld in Avengers (Heroes Reborn) #1. EMH Enchantress wasn't quite at that level, but she didn't disappoint. And, yeah, it was fun to see EMH adapt the Hulk-quits-immediately storyline.
I think one of he persistent issues with the MCU is its continued use of irreverence and snark. It worked in the first Iron Man because it fit the personality of RDJ's Tony and because it was grounding itself in realism, but over time that attitude has worn out its welcome, since now every film uses it, undermining themselves because they think if they take these things seriously it'll make them look ridiculous, or open them to mockery. Like that can be prevented.
Not 100% but it's the closest we've ever gotten. Iron Man's personality was definitely inspired by RDJ over the comic Tony Stark and Jarvis was unfortunately reduced to an AI instead of a butler just like in the MCU. Nick Fury was also black in spite of everything about his character and story being based on 616 Nick Fury and not Ultimate Nick Fury so that was clearly because of the MCU as well. But yeah, 100% best Marvel show ever made hand down and by far the most comic accurate Marvel show ever made.
I love when adaptations repudiate old ways of thinking while still maintaining what worked from the original source material. Lovecraft Country was another great example. HP Lovecraft was a known white supremacist, and the show (and I guess the book it was based on) confronted it head on, making it a black-centric story. It was a great story with the added bonus of basically throwing up a middle finger to the author.
7:20 and pause, why the green lantern logo on the dollar bills? unrelated to the theme of the video I know but is a odd detail that grabbed my attention whilst watching. ; p
I have NO idea why people are talking about this show, maybe it's because of Kang, idk, but I fucking love it. FINALLY This cartoon is marvel's closest thing to a DCAU.
Have you ever thought of talking about United They Stand? I watched it recently, thinking it would be a cheesy abomination…and I was right! It was truly glorious. This show is superior in pretty much every way (especially as Iron Man and Thor only ever get mentions in that and Captain America only pops up for the episode where they take on Baron Zemo) but one: Scarlet Witch’s accent was GLORIOUS! It’s a nice thick Eastern European one. Truly top notch stuff. It’s also interesting as a retrospective in how it was made well before the MCU was a twinkle in anyone’s eye, not to mention that it reflected the truly insane state of comics in the 90s. Not only were the outfits both hideous and impractical but it was also set in the future but not clear about that fact? It was truly bizarre. For those wondering: it aired in 1999 for one season on the Fox Kids block when they made a bunch of licensed Marvel shows for a time and you can currently catch it on Disney+ just like this gem! They’re often under the recommendations for each other too!
I have indeed thought about this! I’ve never watched it myself, but when I get a little further through my current backlog of video ideas I’ll definitely give it a watch and see if any original video ideas present themselves. I don’t really want to be completely pidgeonholed as ‘that guy who just talks about old marvel cartoons’, though, so unless I have something insightful to say, don’t expect a video on it anytime soon.
The scene at 8:00 was later referenced in a deleted scene of The Incredible Hulk, intentionally or not, I hope there are EMH fans working for Marvel Studios
I forgot/kinda didn't know who the space phantom is until this video and remembered ab a marvel encyclopedia that I read as a kid and it had the space phantom in it and his face appeared in my nightmares lmao Edit it was specifically the pic at 5:16
MCU: gets late, doesn't go direct to the point and need 10 movies to make a villain and arc saga. Animated Series: goes direct to the point since the beginning and just need 3 parts or 3 episodes to make a great arc and saga. Example, things that MCU failed and EMH did right just for making comic book stories right: Avengers team up for the first time, Hawkeye, Bruce Banner and Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Carol Danvers, Ms Marvel, Mar-vell, Ronan, Kree, Skrulls, Masters of evil, Thunderbolts, Villains, Hydra, Ultron, Shield, Sword, Kang, Galactus, comedy, characters development, stories, plot. That's how you create and write things or something great, not making them with fan service and making seen more "interisting" so that in the end turns into generic versions.
the idea that a supervillain needs to be deflated or changed to not be villainous is super silly and vary anti story yes mandrill was a horrifying concept and character who did awful things but get this he is a bad guy we dont need to de-fang our baddies we simply just need to understand not to underscore how bad their crimes really are.
I think Mandrill, more than many other similar villains, has an origin and powerset that we can do without in the 21st century - a lot of his comic identity is unfortunately playing with old racial stereotypes and tropes like the 'black brute' - rationalwiki.org/wiki/Black_brute - which are best left behind in my opinion. That being said, I don't think the show de-fangs him. He still has these powers, and is still a formidable foe - albeit one that cannot beat the Avengers together. It's to the show's credit that the version of Mandrill is a largely faithful one (despite having the really unsavoury elements glossed over), who is then defeated by the Wasp and the team. It isn't a rewriting of the past, but it is a repudiation of it.
@@PillarofGarbage I think if we deem that just because we have progressed as a society that we have the right to change someone else's art that quickly becomes a slippery slope with any medium especially comic books and I think there is something to be said about the avengers not only fighting harmful stereotypes but defeating the idea of harmful stereotypes by defeating them you can both be fighting someone who embodies a bad stereotype and be defeating the idea of that stereotype all at the same time and I think changing super villains who make us uncomfortable it's just another way of gentrifying our art but don't get me wrong I think they adapted mandrill perfectly for a children's show
Over all, a vey in depth and interesting history lesson. Whitch make's me wanna watch the show even more... .. And make's me hate Disney for canceling it just a bit more. Also quec question regarding the Mandrill part. Like, why his powers where originaly considered "controvercial", I can understand. And why they changed it how they did. But this maked me question... If powers like his are "controvercial", or "inappropriate".... Them how, or why characters like Poison Ivy are still a thing? Even tho she too uses "pheromon" based power, but coming from plants. (beside's them been characters from 2 diffrent comic wolds)
I'm not an expert on Poison Ivy, but I don't think comic books exploring darker themes like assault, coercion, and free will is necessarily a bad thing, but only if it's done seriously, with sensitivity and compassion. As I understand it, this wasn't often the case with Mandrill. And what makes it worse in Mandrill's case than with regard to someone like Poison Ivy, Mandrill and his powers were bound up with a lot of racist folklore/stereotyping about Africans / African-Americans and their supposed 'sexual magic'. Gladly, it's a trope that has mostly died off, but there's always that racial aspect to Mandrill's powers that makes him even more outdated.
@@PillarofGarbage well, for startes, thank you for explaining in detail WHY Mandrill "powers" where that big of a problem. A a bit more regarding histori of his creation. And as for the part regarding "dark/mature" topics in comics. I never said I had anything against it. Since like books, TV, Games etc. Comics are just anouther ways of presenting stories. And as for Mandrill/Poison Ivy comparison... To me at least it's kinda ironic that people call out character like Mandrill or Star Fox (aka the Inhuman, and Thanos Brother) for been "problematic" because of there "power of pheromons". But I never seen anything like this towards characters like DC Queen Bee, or Poison Ivy. Even tho they more or less using the same type of power.
I loved Avengers-EMH but that "evil twin" business got real old real fast and they kept playing it over and over. The Skrulls were the evil twin Avengers, Amoura turned Hulk into an evil twin. It's just such a tired old trope that fans get tired of it... like stupid time travel (which EMH had a bunch of too). It's bad when the fan base longs for a simpler, more believable bad guy.
No, that isn’t what I said. The issue isn’t that Mandrill isn’t a very nice person. It’s that his character, powers, and story are all heavily influenced by racist stereotypes and folklore - which themselves have been responsible for harming a great many people.
I think these videos are very insightful, but I feel like the statement that you only praise the show, not criticize other Marvel projects is untrue, where the format of these videos is comparing the two, and what the other medium did wrong that EMH does better. That's criticism. And by all means, do it, but be aware that it is what you are doing in these videos. Or, if you really do want to only praise EMH, not criticize other media, I'd suggest changing the format from comparing two adaptations, to just a straight up review of EMH.
I disagree on the Phantom being too weird and dumb for Earths' Mightiest Heroes. The show was always willing to adapt more obscure comicbook characters, and making them cool without stripping away what made them weird and unique.
You’re probably right that the show could have pulled him off (phrasing..?) but either way I really admire the elegant way they adapted his story into the ongoing story with Enchantress instead.
@@PillarofGarbage Yeah, no, this is very good, and narratively better than if the Phantom dropped in for one episode, then just dipped. I just see this attitude a lot that "this comic character is too silly to be adapted into being cool" or "this costume is too dumb", when it's all arbitrary, and just conditioning, not fact. The reason people think Green Goblin is cool but not Space Phantom is because they see Green Goblin more, and they're told he's cool. I've been told by people that Kang shouldn't have his helmet cause it's lame. And yet we EMH fans think his look is dope. People should let go of their preconceptions of coolness, and realize a good writer can make any concept work in a story.
Regarding Mandrill, I'm pretty sure they had him be easily defeated not because they want feminist empowerment moment, but because nobody cares about Mandrill and they wanted a throwaway villain for the scene. I think you're just reading into something that isn't there.
With respect, I’m not sure I agree. While I’m sure that was a reason too - needing a disposable villain for this establishing scene - the team behind EMH know their stuff. They’ll have known the history of Mandrill, and the ways early issues had him use his powers. To me, the fact that the scene plays out the way it does given this awareness on the writers’ part is evidence enough for the reading I make.
@@PillarofGarbage Then how do you explain Purple Man's depiction in Season 2? He has done horrible things to women in the comics (specifically Jessica Jones), but he isn't treated like how Mandrill was.
Claude I was around when I space Phantom first aired I enjoyed it I like this new one I lost interest I hate to say this The Originals way better than this garbage the animation is great did not like the storyline I grew up back in the 60s and 70s are cartoons was corny but it worked
...Why is it 'problematic' to have a villain who is a threat to women and is implied to have done things to them without their consent? I can understand if the idea is trying to avoid that sort of stuff to ensure kids don't get introduced to horrifying concepts before they get to old but otherwise... dude, he's a villain. He does evil things. The idea of manipulating women gives girls a reason to fear him and boys a reason to hate him, meaning it's very reasonable to root for the heroes to stop him. What, are you saying that it's problematic because his targets are women? Sure, so Poison Ivy and her pheremones are just as problematic then, given how she uses them, to my knowledge, against men.
I’m not making the claim that the power to control women is inherently problematic. In Mandrill’s case, the issue lies in the way it intersects with the history of racist American folk mythology around the supposed sexual hypnosis powers possessed by the African and African-American races.
@@PillarofGarbage I... what? I dont think anyone would have known or even cared about that factoid. I sure as hell didn't. EDIT: ...Hold on, is that even REAL? That just sounds so dumb.

You're right, I do wish they had figured out a way to make her a bit more of a heavy-hitter sometimes. But I suppose it is somewhat reflective of the comics - and there's something to be said for having a consistent power scale on the team. Just a shame Jan has to be at the bottom.
@@PillarofGarbage Don’t forget she disabled the Kree Sentry 459
I love this series of videos focusing on EMH, please keep making them
I plan to! There’s so much more to say.
@@PillarofGarbage i look forward to it
It seems you’re doing a whole series of videos on this show, that’s great.
Thanks for raising this! I’ll shoutout the event nearer the time.
@@PillarofGarbage Thanks a lot ! We’re a small fanbase so videos like these help a lot, hopefully we can bring EMH back
Spectacular’s not a part of this, FYI.
I love how EMH takes inspiration from comics and also adapts some storylines while still bringing new things and elements to the table
Man I would of love to see the World War Hulk be in EMH.Would of been a real cool especially if the hulk kept the Executioners battle Axe and used it as one of his weapons fighting off all the marvel heroes.
Season 3 Concept Art: i.imgur.com/1hj28yt.jpg
Hell no. Hulk has already been disrespectfully portrayed as an egotistical goth eyed shell of a shell of his former self, I don't want ruined anything else about him too. Mind you emh is good but knowing what I know about the hulk the aspect of emh when the hulk is involved it is solid fecal garbage.
@@lawrencemorris2261 dude, what you on about?
World war hulk is one of the best hulk stories and emh handles hulk extremely well.
Love how punctual Hulk is
Your editing is getting better with every episode!
If we can have Arnim Zola and Doughboy, we can have Space Phantom as a one-off villain
Eyyyyy another emh video
Shit was my childhood, and I totally forgot about it for a minute.
EMH was 100% true to the classic source material unlike the MCU.
The scene at the end (that you used to compare to the 2012 movie) also reminded me a bit of the "You can't defeat me" meme from Thor Ragnarok
Please keep uploading these videos I love that this show is getting more and more recognition and your videos on the show make it even better
You’re crushing it with this videos. Cheers!
My favourite episode of the show even as a kid I loved it
Its a shame we never got any merch from this show I would love to have some figures maybe a t shirt the characters were so likeable in this.
Avengers Assemble cartoon did do the Space Phantom at one time, it was an OK episode.
Amazing. Can you do a video about what could've been in season 2 if Man of Action hadn't interfered?
Do you mean Season 3? Or just what could have happened in Season 2 if they hadn’t been forced to wrap up the plot quickly?
@@PillarofGarbage season 2
man of Action participated a lot but not much is said about it, not even I know the story
7:20 and pause, why the green lantern logo on the dollar bills? unrelated to the theme of the video I know but is a odd detail that grabbed my attention whilst watching. ; p
I love how Ultra CHULK straight up flirts with Wasp right in front of Hank and then roasts him.
Mandrill became Mojo Jojo.
I want a Marvel animation universe. Come on DISNEY!!!
Same man.a new x men and fantastic four series’s would be great
@@Mirrorcomics24 I fear for these cartoons.
I have NO idea why people are talking about this show, maybe it's because of Kang, idk, but I fucking love it. FINALLY
This cartoon is marvel's closest thing to a DCAU.
3 toed Hulk exists, this will invade your dreams for years to come.
Can you talk about why the emh flashback was in the man of action in avengers assemble
Some of the EMH writers actually worked on Ragnarok, I believe!
@@PillarofGarbage that’s an awesome fact!
2:02 they had some trouble figuring out how many toes to give the Hulk in the early days, huh?
I forgot/kinda didn't know who the space phantom is until this video and remembered ab a marvel encyclopedia that I read as a kid and it had the space phantom in it and his face appeared in my nightmares lmao
Edit it was specifically the pic at 5:16
The wasp and enchantress are so hot
Lol! I just read Avengers #2 yesterday! Perfect!
It’s knight is back
Huh, only double digits comments and likes, i'm here moderately early
I think the EMH verison of the second Avengers comic was good and I don’t think the Phantom is really needed when you have the Enchantress.
the idea that a supervillain needs to be deflated or changed to not be villainous is super silly and vary anti story yes mandrill was a horrifying concept and character who did awful things but get this he is a bad guy we dont need to de-fang our baddies we simply just need to understand not to underscore how bad their crimes really are.
@@PillarofGarbage I think if we deem that just because we have progressed as a society that we have the right to change someone else's art that quickly becomes a slippery slope with any medium especially comic books and I think there is something to be said about the avengers not only fighting harmful stereotypes but defeating the idea of harmful stereotypes by defeating them you can both be fighting someone who embodies a bad stereotype and be defeating the idea of that stereotype all at the same time and I think changing super villains who make us uncomfortable it's just another way of gentrifying our art but don't get me wrong I think they adapted mandrill perfectly for a children's show
I know making a new Season of this show is almost impossible, but I wish they made a new animated series with the original creators.
You should do a video on the Spider-Man episode from this show
Over all, a vey in depth and interesting history lesson.
It's bad when the fan base longs for a simpler, more believable bad guy.
just give space phantom posession powers and redesign him a bit mabye it could work then.
I know the purple man abused his powers on many females one of which was Jessica Jones. But I guess they didn’t want two sexual predators
Is there a petition for season 3 though? I mean mcu is planning an. Xmen 97'.
Nice
Punctual Hulk is best Hulk
hinestly my only issue with emh is that i wish wasp did more 99% of the time her blasts did shit fuck all
My question is why she doesn’t she grow large like Giant Man did more often, the Ultron-5 episode showed that she has the ability to do so…
I'm a simple man I see a emh so I click c:
So Mandril is marvel's poison ivy?
Sort of, yeah!
7:49 are we really saying a villain is a bad idea because he’s a horrible person? I think you missed the point of his existence.
No, that isn’t what I said. The issue isn’t that Mandrill isn’t a very nice person. It’s that his character, powers, and story are all heavily influenced by racist stereotypes and folklore - which themselves have been responsible for harming a great many people.
I think EMH is the best thing Marvel ever made period. The comics and movies have nothing on it.
Space Phantom was lame
This show was amazing. The new marvel avengers cartoon are terrible!! Animations sucks ass and the marvel avengers new cartoon is just soo bad.
3 seconds too late :(
Oh, clutch the pearls. The UA-camr is offended by a womanizing villain. Give it a rest.
