I picked up my 1199 4 years ago with only 12,000km on it. I,m an older rider and this is my most fav bike ever. It took about 10 months to really gel with it but now I turn off DTC no wheelie control I set the Engine response to high and its an animal what a blast. Bike is now up to nearly 60,000kms and still going strong. Only things I had to replace other than normal stuff on any high powered macine like Chains and sprockets is the Gear Posision Sensor which was about $200 and valvle cover gaskets were leaking a little which got replaced on the big valve service. and the Clutch push rod seal started leaking but my Ducati expert George from DMoto has a genius cheap fix for that.

Was it your rear valve cover, and how long did it leak for before you had it replaced? My dad has an 1199 Tricolore and we just noticed oil is weeping around the rear gasket. Anyway cheers and fun riding mate.

    • @chrisv-l3835

@@benchaggaresmusic Yes it was the rear that leaked first. I left it for about 5 months as it was a slow leak then by the time I had the Valve service done the front had started to leak a little as well. Once they were both replaced then no problems since.

I also set the throttle response to the race option for the standard ride mode. I found that lag or vagueness in the standard mode distracting. Wet was even worse.
Try the Ducatispacers throttle spacers too, they take up all slack in the throttle (another personal pet peeve), are cheap to buy, and install in about 5 minutes.

If you're after a commuter machine that works flawlessly in traffic. The BMW will have it. If you're after a passionate, spirited ride that makes your soul come to life... It has to be the Duc! I have a V2 with Akra exhaust system and it makes me smile every time I get on it.. in my opinion it's an easy choice but I respect the dilemma. Good luck and ride safe.

    • @Rider_Tom

That’s what I loved about the Ducati! Riding it was such a special event. The BMW may be faster on paper, but the Ducati certainly had the special / wow factor

Do you still have the V2 Terry? If so, how's it been? Also curious if you've ridden a bigger panigale and what your thoughts are between them and the V2.

    • @terryd80
      @terryd80 9 місяців тому

@@Rider_Tom Hi Tom, yes I do still have the V2 and absolutely love it. I find that as I grow with the V2 I'm enjoying riding it even more than when I first bought it. I'm a short-legged rider so the larger, wider V4 (whilst not impossible to ride) just doesn't fit me as comfortably and it would break my heart to drop a bike I'd just spent £25k or more on. So I'll stick with the V2. I'm definitely not complaining though!

I wouldn’t buy the base model. Go for an S with Ohlins suspension and carbon hugger and marchesini wheels. Also quick shifters can be unreliable and if you miss and gears you stress and stretch the chain so make sure it’s in good condition. Number 1 spark plug is a nightmare to get to its behind the radiator sometimes they need replaced along with the HT leads leading to the plugs as the fuel tank can rub through the wiring happened to my bike at 10 thousand miles. Switch gear can be annoy as the indicators can fail to cancel also the TFT dash can fuck up and if it’s been replaced the mileage is 0 so make sure low mileage examples are genuine mileage and not just a screen replaced and 7k mikes have been laundered and not documented 👍🏼 I appreciate this comment is post way after your upload but hope my comment can help anyone else looking at buying an 1199. If your looking just buy one you’ll regret it the day your rotting in a nursing home looking back at the things you should have done. Awesome bike and I’m currently considering handing my r1m back to the finance company and buying and 1199 R it’s not about lap times or top speed for me it’s all about the sense of occasion and the fact I just want one. Fuck it 👍🏼

Great comment 👍. I'm basically doing what you are thinking about only with a standard R1. I just bought an 1199r (clone) from the same dealership I got my R1 from. It's the base model but the previous owner spent stupid money to make it awesome. 1199r tank, fairings and carbon fiber everything. Full titanium Akra exhaust and super nice carbon fiber BST wheels. Ducati rearsets etc.... Now I just gotta wait for it to be shipped over to Maui from San Diego.

Bought the V4 a few weeks ago. Now that I'm able to ride them both back to back I have to say one has to own both. The V4 goes forward really fast. The 1199 goes either upwards or sideways. The 1199 is for party, the V4 is for business :D

899/959 vs 1199/1299. Something very odd I found when buying mine was the insurance for the smaller bikes were way more (almost double) than the bigger more expensive models. My only thought is the 899/959 are bought by younger buyers because they are cheaper and crashed more often.

I currently have four Duc superbikes, one of each generation of twins except the 916 family. TBH my 1299S in many ways is my least favorite for a few reasons.
It is fast as hell and might be the best-looking bike I have ever seen. Seating position is the most comfortable of all of them. I love the technology and design thought that Ducati put in the bike. In any measurable way it is the best bike I have ever owned.
    But...
Hate the heat it puts out. Even with the heat shield kit it is miserable in the summer, even while moving. Considered having the pipes ceramic coated to try and help.
I've never changed the exhaust but it frankly sounds tinny stock, unlike the booming sound from my 851 and 1098R. No cat exhaust system might help with heat too.
Not a huge fan of the dash. The relative elegance of the 999 dash is my personal favorite.
It is a major PITA to work on, just changing the screen took way too much time. All previous bikes to this are easier in that way.
Fixed mirrors look nice but are frankly stupid to have on a bike, period.
Engine top end is incredible, mid range is no slouch but you would expect more from 1285cc
The handling is quite different to the tube frame bikes, more lively and light. That could be good or bad depending on your preference.
I've owned it six years but never really along with the switchgear, even when it was the only one I rode for weeks. The little buttons are annoying. 1098 is more intuitive IMO.
And finally it doesn't really have a "relaxed" mode. It always wants to GO and go fast. The others can just cruise if that is what you want that day. Wet mode maybe but it seems pointless unless you get caught out in a downpour.

You get a fantastic cusion seat for 190 bucks of the auction site we all know n love nice red stitching and Ducati logo half swade half the normal stuff but it's fantastic it locks you into the tank abit more with it being slightly taller cusion but it makes the bike a daily rider now and kills that crazy heat that comes from the engine its got a heatsheild through the seat you get absolutely cooking from it thats not pleasant! just from that upgrade cause the original seat does hurt when Riding long distances! But wouldn't recommend it without the seat upgrade for a daily rider and all red bikes are in more crashes lol it is a cool garage queen! Keep the Beamer! Tyres if original or same kind are pee poor in drizzle definitely need a set all weather's even when heated up there slippy

You may find after the 1199, the 899 is basically less of what you like. Or perhaps the 1199 really wasn't an upgrade as it is "more" of the things you're actually not that interested in. Short answer is with them really so similar except for engine power (and insurance) you will likely find one always more desirable than the other and the second one will just sit.

Even if you have a full license, don’t. You will quite literally wreck the first time you ride it if it’s your first street bike, it’s got the power to weight ratio of an average weight car with 2,000hp. It is simply way too much power for a new rider to have, even if you’ve ridden dirt bikes before; this is another level.
Ignoring licensing, a better first bike would be a Ducati scrambler. Still Ducati but much more practical and useable bikes. Or even better, a cbr500r, R6, r3, ninja 300 or 600, really any sport or naked bike between 300 and 600cc. Once you get so confident riding is as easy as walking, then you could consider a bike like this. Otherwise you better hope you have the best insurance there is

@@DB6__ 1199’s are hard to find, if you already have it, don’t get rid of it. R3’s and Cbr300’s are usually very cheap, ninja 300’s even cheaper if you can find a nice 2000-2006 model (super reliable and old enough to be affordable)
In my opinion if you take a 300 to a local racetrack if you have one, by the 3rd-5th track day you attend (take the classes they do) you’ll be good enough to ride the 1199 on the street with caution and in touring mode.
If you can’t afford yet another bike I totally understand, but if you can stretch it you’ll be happier with yourself long term by starting with a smaller bike. 600 is a great step up but track days really get your confidence on a motorcycle built up in a hurry and you might be able to skip the intermediate size
