  • Time to beat the very alive horse of Film vs. Digital as it's still the most controversial subject in modern photography. Make sure to add to the discussion in the comments! It's not about Fujifilm cameras vs. Leica film cameras or any cameras at all. It's about the format itself and what you want to do with your end result. So don't look at this as a gear related discussion. Until the end, think about who you are as a photographer and what points made by us you resonate with. And then make sure to add your own we missed in the comments!

    Battery argument sounds weird to me or for people who use cameras with battery life for 2-3 days of shooting 😂 and film is much harder to acquire when you are on the go in a new city (particularly in europe). Plus if you bring 10 rolls for a day of shooting then that will take much more space in your bag than one spare battery. Archiving is another interesting discussion with no perfect solution. I love how simple and straight forward archiving negatives is. It feels right and future proof. And with digital you have to keep an eye on the archive more frequently. Adjusting to new technology. Buying new hard drives to replace the old drives and so on. But digital files can be backed up in multiple places and locations. I can access my entire archive from anywhere in the world with my cloud storage. I don’t need to worry that when my house burns down I loose all my photographs. Digital is data. Film is chemistry. At the end the images should end up printed in books or galleries. Then it doesn’t matter anymore how the „data“ was collected. Print should be the final medium. Love the look of film but also love my digital files because I know how to make them look the way I like them (which is not a film look). To have complete control over Film you need to do everything yourself and that means more time fiddling with the result. Which can be fun but even with my digital files I spend 3min editing max. Shooting is more fun than editing. So it comes down to the shooting experience for me. And we have a camera for every kind of experience for both mediums. We are lucky bastards😄 Overall I am happy with digital and will shoot film for fun or projects that call for it. Anyways these are my thought I am having at midnight while lying in my bed haha. Good night.

      Also about the battery argument. I went on a trip only bringing film and I forgot to bring a second battery, (I had bought one the day after, just in case, even though it lasts for a year). During the trip it was impossible to find that type of battery so I couldn't shoot during the whole trip

    I disagree that film makes you a better shooter. Yes if you use any auto mode in digital then you’re not learning about the exposure triangle. However, if you shoot in manual than it’s the same assuming you’re manually focusing as well. In fact I would even argue digital has a better learning curve because if allows you to review the photos faster instead of waiting for them to be developed. Therefore you can review your images quicker and learn from your mistakes faster than film.

    I would say that photography is understanding lights and how it works. It's not only film.
    A good photo is a good photo. Who cares if it's shot on film, with a Leica, a Canon or an Iphone?
    Cool vid Alex :)

    • @luuvuh
      @luuvuh Рік тому +1

      Agreed. The reason why we say film teaches you the basics is because now, all cameras have evf and many new photographer shoot using liveview. So you don’t really know what the settings are. It’s just turning dials with your fingers and exposure looks good, you shoot. I see videos of photographers holding the camera out infront of them using liveview and it makes me cringe sometimes.
      Can’t do that with film. So you really have to learn to see the light and set the camera accordingly to get the exposure you’re looking for.

    I am a hobby photographer and I come from the analogue era and photograph 99% digitally and if I insert a film then it is mostly a B/W film.
    I lost all my negatives from the analogue era (1986-1997) in a house fire, digital would have been much less likely to happen to me. After this event I stopped taking pictures for a few years, had to mentally process the fire and then started taking pictures again in 2000/2001.
    Yes Alex, in digital photography the high resolution is annoying when the focus is not right (that's just the way it is).
    I have no opinion on how to start with photography. I didn't have the opportunity to do it digitally when I was learning photography. But one thing I can say is that until now it has never been so easy to take a technically good picture without any knowledge about photography and that is a good progress in my eyes.
    At the end of the day, as you have already mentioned, what counts is whether you pressed the shutter button at the right moment or not and not whether the picture was recorded on film or as a file.
    So I wish you all good light.

    To me, the shooting experience, the process and the final result of b/w film is definitely superior to digital. And.. I tried to shoot (only) film for about six months. However, I quickly came to realize that I can't justify the costs.. Therefore, I moved to a digital M Monochrom (246) which gives me a great portion of the analogue RF shooting experience (especially battery life; highlight protection aside) and B/W DNG files I can easily process to get at least pretty close to the final look I want to achieve ✌

    • @luuvuh
      @luuvuh Рік тому +1

      Agreed. I have the MM246 also. And those files are incredible!!! I’ve never seen anything like it before. and you can definitely make it look like film. It’s the reason why I bought it, stay away from film. But it’s hard to do that 😅. also, highlight protection, when they release the m11m. It’s gonna be insane! The highlight protection on the m11 censor is mind blowing.

      @patrickjclarke Рік тому

      Hmm, I can rip through a roll just as fast on my Minolta Maxxum 7 as I can my Sony A99...it's not film slowing you down. That being said, you can turn off the screens, go manual mode etc on most digital cameras...you just have to do it. :)

    • @CianMcsweeney
      @CianMcsweeney Рік тому

      @@patrickjclarke well what I meant/implied was that the design of film cameras generally means you need to slow down to ensure you get everything in focus, exposed correctly etc. Unfortunately not many digital cameras are designed that way

    As a teenager, I discovered and fell in love with photography around 1969.
    Later in the early 70’s I got my first Nikon (it was a used FNT).
    I’m a grandfather today and have been shooting digital for the past 3 decades.
    Now that film is "hip" again, naturally I wanted to give it another try.
    For film I use a Nikon FM and N60 both loaded with Kodak Portra 100-800.
    I shoot street, nature, landscape, night, portraits, action, sports and some astro photography.
    My current daily shooter is a Nikon Z6ii (using Nikon’s Z Primes) and a couple of Z zooms.
    That Z6ii is a night and action monster.
    I’ll try to shoot a couple of rolls per year, but for everything else, I think in 2023:
    DIGITAL is the way to go.
    Thank you.

    Photography as a 'hobby' or alternate diversion can be quite expensive.. So make a budget for it. As a studio wedding/portrait photographer from the 60's till about 2000 film was very convenient. I exposed carefully and the lab courier picked up film and returned the finished prints and negative, leaving me free to deal with customers all of each work day. Cost was not a particular factor as I just charged more than my costs (as did other pros). I enjoyed each and every film camera I used as I still enjoy many of them along with the current crop of digital cameras. As someone said; 'enjoy the process'. When I switched to digital in 2000, I changed every aspect of my marketing, pricing and shooting to remain profitable. Most of my pro associates did not and found themselves trapped in the 'lightroom' away from customers, sales and enjoyable shooting.

    I find it amusing to hear photographers complain about the cost of film...then they go out and buy an expensive digital Leica and expensive lenses and of course the expensive laptop every few years, and of course the redundant archiving over and over again. And the time spent hunched over the laptop sorting through COUNTLESS "free"image files. I shoot both, but I'm convinced both digital and film are expensive. If you are passionate (crazy), you'll will adapt to the cost.

    Film is king but no one here is opening second mortgages to be able to afford these insanely absurd film prices we see in most places in the world. Plus unless you are self developing that’s another HUGE chunk of money lost. Or TIME lost if you self develop and scan.
    So I’ll just shoot digital because I don’t have TIME or MONEY to afford film and all it entails. To be able to fully shoot how I like for family work and street work 🤕💸

    NGL, deep down I do think the technological advancement is showing why digital is superior. As much as I want to shoot film all life, it's only possible if it's cheaper than digital. The problem is that getting into film is not as cheap as it was 3-5 years ago, making it harder to recommend to anyone getting into photography. Spend big bucks for a film camera and trickle on film rolls VS spending big bucks on digital with one time pay on memory card...
