    I downloaded the free kit settings for my TD-11 from Piero Peluche, and some of them are pretty decent. I also listened to samples of the VExpressions kit settings and some of those sound decent as well. My biggest issue with either of these sources is that you have to buy them in packs. I really wish they would let you choose kits ala carte. I would pay $2 per kit all day long, but I don't like paying $35 for 25 kits if I'm only going to use a few of them.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums 7 років тому +1

      yeah that's how it goes. These guy's know that if they sell the kits separate , they'd only make $2 off you. So they sell it as a bundle. It's just business.

    I have a TD12 and was able to assemble and tweak 2 different kits to sound really close to Alex Van Halen's kit from Fair Warning and Stewart Copeland's kit from Zenyatta Mendatta.
    When doing this, remember that the kits on recordings are heavily EQ'd. Start with the right drum and EQ.
    Roll off lows for most of the elements and really take out the lows and mids from cymbals.

    Now seeing this in 2020.
    I am surprised that such packs are not more common.
    In the eighties when FM synthesizers like the DX7 and even other units such as the Roland and Korg instruments were popular but difficult to program there were many individuals and companies who created their custom patches.
    I agree with you that if you pay 2K for a set, even up to 50$ is not too much to pay for custom settings designed by a professional.
    Imagine if all the top session and stage drummers can earn in this way especially in these Covid times.
    Great channel with excellent content.

    Throwing in a comment, I've used Alan and the Vexpression packs on TD-25 and Pearl Mimic and the amount of work that goes into them is insane. They transform the drum kits and I would have no hesitation buying them for whatever modules I've owned. It's a level of editing you rarely see outside of Superior Drummer and other VSTs because of how much work it takes. They're excellent.

  • @Fogeyspasm

    Use the Vexpressions Infinity pack on the TD50. Completely transformed the kit. Also it is best to go into the module trigger settings and tone down the very initial attack on the pads to get a more realistic sound and feel.

      Absolutely dude. 18x16 tom? -45ish attack, 7-8 set for time, and for me personally I like my toms resonance at 100 and apply mufflers if need be. Makes it sound way more realistic. Roland shot themselves in the foot by demoing everything with no transient. If they want to reach outside of engineers and get the hobbiest market interested they should of done this right out of the gate. I am still suprised Pearl passed them up but Roland are kind of snobby. I have owned a lot of pearl hardware in the past and they know how to sell gear.

    I have tried pretty much all of these.......and although Michael Schack comes up with some interesting stuff..........I literally can't imagine my TD30 without VExpressions pack(s). I like them so much that I went back and purchased a second pack a year or so later.
    Keep in mind these are settings as Justin explained.............so there is nothing that prevents you from tweaking a little more even after you load up the Vex kits. But, I have seen many people comment (and I agree) that the Vex kits are how the TD30 SHOULD sound out of the box.

    The eDrum Workshop and Drum-tec also deserve a mention imo. I don't know if they already existed when you made this video. As I understand it, eDW is just one guy making "settings packs" as you accurately call them, but I'm pretty he also uses new samples. He sells them in packs but individual kits as well, which I like because most packs I've checked out only have one or two kits I really like.
    Drum-tec only sells packs for about €40, to my knowledge only with factory Roland samples. Some of the kits sound really good, others not so much imo.

    another great video, Justin! after a lot of experimenting with the settings, I'm happy with my sounds thanks you and a LOT of fiddling around with the decay settings so thank you for the tip; now the crashes sound more realistic and can be head over the ride. I was also having triggering problems with the toms; they were making a slight rattling noise after being hit - I set them to be RHH135 hihats in the module and now rattling noise has gone! bizarre..but I'm happy

  • @23ograin53

    I truely appreciate the hard work put into settings packs but it's frustrating that most focus on trying to replicate artists' recordings rather that just trying to reproduce drum kits. All I want is something close to a Starclassic Maple. I'd be absolutely thrilled with just that ONE realistic sounding kit. The whole point is to make my ekit sound like drums, not a collection of over produced studio performances.

      It depends on the module, and the company creating custom kits. The Roland TD1/3/5/8/9/10/11/12/15/20/30 modules don’t have sample import at all. The newer modules do though, so Drumtec can add samples in those module preset packs

    High end Roland modules are probably the best solution for e-drums on the market right now. But the pricing for my opinion is too expensive! But still for the better sound the Superior Drummer and some tweeks and tunes gets better result!
    But it's disappointing and get me puzzled. Why i should pay around 2к for high end module that can't make a good deal out of the box and i should go with third party solutions? It's a big question for me so far :)
    By the way Justin, what do you think about new Alesis Strike Pro kit? I think 2k is fair price for whats Alesis offer now.

    Justin, just reporting in that I purchased both V-Expressions packs for the TD-30 (Essentials Rock & Performance). While the snares, cymbals and general mix sound great, the toms not so much. I started to panic as I went through all the sets. The majority of sets are using the Univ toms, and they all sound pretty similar… like hitting cardboard. Tom 1 & 2 are tuned way too high and toms 3 & 4 too low and have a strange sounding resonance.
    I am not sure why so many sets use the Univ tom set, but there are many better sounding kits that can be tuned and tweaked way better. I spent the last 2 days obsessively changing toms. This is probably the worst 80.00 I've spent towards the TD-30K. I reloaded my sets. They sound much better (except the snares and cymbals).
    I realize everyone has their own sound preferences, but I don't see how anyone could like the V-Expressions Univ tom setup, and why they chose to use this on so many kit setups.
    The upside is that this whole ordeal has really forced me to learn the sound features of the TD-30.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums 7 років тому

      Ouch, sorry to hear about that. One of the reasons I never bought either of those packs for my module is that I didn't really love the sound. Everyone RAVES about the sound, but It's not for me personally.

    • @gxbchiro
      @gxbchiro 6 років тому

      I only have a TD-11 and do not know about editing a TD-30 module, but you can still make your investment pay! If you really like the V-Expressions sounds for the snares, cymbals and general mix, then look at their individual settings in the instrument edit window and use them to tweak the original TD-30 sound to match them. Just make yourself a Template using Words or Excel listing each instrument settings such as Tuning, Mufflings, Strainer, etc., then write down the value for each setting in a separate column and print it. Repeat the process for other kits you like. It will make it easy for you to edit your original TD-30 drum kits to your liking. Saves you a lot of time and effort, and it will get you going at learning how to modify each instrument settings. Just my 2 pennies!

    Just picked up a vex pack for the TD50. $60.00. I've made it through 33 of 45 sets. My impressions thus far are the snare sounds are pretty decent- definitely an upgrade. The cymbals are pretty good- not a huge difference from the stock / artist kits- but they aren't bad. Bass drums are pretty good too- some don't go so well when the whole kit is played together especially the toms. The toms... Nothing inspiring here at all. I was frankly disappointed. Pretty bad sounds with little use of layering to add some dynamics. The tuning and pretty much all of the settings just seem off. The artist kit upgrade from Roland supplied some much better tweaked toms... I just hate the tom that sounds like you're hitting a fish bowl covered with a drum head... You can make them better yourself but that's what I paid $60 for?? I'm not totally convinced I shouldn't have paid the req. bucks but I definitely don't feel like I got a great deal. Like many have said before- It does force you to really try and figure out all of the details in regards to programming. If you don't mind parting with $60 especially then go for it. If you spent a long time making up those dollars I'd say you're probably capable of figuring out a set with all the options yourself...
